First of all, mainstream viewers are going to have a fairly easy choice between James
Cameron’s “Avatar” and the romantic comedy “Did You Hear About the Morgans”? So, CGI sci-fi adventure or lame middle-age comedy featuring “Sex in the City” leftovers and a more-stuttering-than-usual Hugh Grant. Oh joy. Fans of the more challenging independent scene may have the opportunity to see more quality work, but little of it will offer anything remotely light. “Precious” and “The Road” open at AMC’s River Park Square Theatres. “Precious” follows the story of a high-school girl who, aside from being a virtual slave to her mother (Mo’Nique), has been impregnated twice (!) by her stepfather. And “The Road” is an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s post-holocaust study, which pretty much guarantees that it will be one of the bleakest films of the year/Dan Webster, Movies & More. More here.
Question: Which movie do you most want to see during the Christmas holidays/vacation?

Fantastic Mr. Fox & Sherlock Holmes.
I wouldn’t go see Avatar if you paid me $50 to do it.
Cabbage Boy on December 17 at 3:50 p.m.
Save your money on Mr. Fox. Saw it with the boys and it was entertaining, but nothing worth spending the money on now.
I like Sherlock Holmes, I have listened to all the audio books in that series. We also are watching the 94 tv series with Jeremy Brett.
Based on that and the previews, I don’t think I will like the new Holmes.

Cabbage, are you usually a fan of Wes Anderson’s work? That’s my primary motivation to see it - well, that and the fact that Roald Dahl was my favorite author as a kid.

MM, looking at his movies, I don’t think I have seen any of his others.
The boys had earned a trip to the movies and I ended up taking them. There wasn’t much else so they chose Mr. Fox. It is a good movie, humorous and all that. Just not worth what we spent on it at the theater. I like Dahl’s Charlie Bucket series, but haven’t read the others either.

Sherlock Holmes.
Sisyphus on December 17 at 4:18 p.m.
I love Wes Anderson but, as with most movies, I can wait. But this is a completely different genre for him. I’m curious to see how it works. Maybe I’ll see it in the second run.
What’s with the Road? Did it get a nationwide release? I don’t remember it coming to Boise.
MM, why the visceral reaction to Avatar? I’m usually very skeptical of over hyped big budget films and the reviews I’ve seen have been mixed but I haven’t seen anything that makes me think Waterworld, although I heard it may have cost as much as half a billion.
Sisyphus on December 17 at 4:19 p.m.
Agreed Bondo. Of all the movies being hyped that looks the most entertaining.

The Road still isn’t in Spokane, Sis.
I’m bummed.
Stayed up late to finish the book a couple weeks ago!

My wife agreed to go to Avatar with me tomorrow for the 6:30 3d show. Could flop…could be incredible. I’m certain it will be either or.
