Vernon Baker Wild Card — 12.17.09

Gov. Butch Otter has proclaimed today in Idaho to be Vernon Baker Day, to honor the World War II hero from Benewah County who turned 90 today. You can read the SR editorial about Vernon Baker here. Also, Huckleberries topped the 2 million page-view mark for the year around 10 o’clock last night. The blog did so in good fashion, registering 9,729 page-views and 5,443 unique views for the day, for a total for the year of 2,001,096. All of us — bloggers, blurkers, and commenters — have a role in the success of this forum. But there’s always room for more. Please tell your family and friends about HBO. Now, for today’s Wild Card …

Repeating an entry from earlier today… Did people see the article in today’s paper about Agri Beef - from Boise - donating $50,000, and $77,000 worth of beef and pork, to Second Harvest food bank in Spokane? They’ve donated $50,000 every year the last five years to Second Harvest. And they donate in Idaho as well. Stand up guys. Family-owned company. I’m committed to purchasing their product (though have no idea how to ensure that I’m doing that). I blogged about it this a.m. (link below). Anyone have ideas about how to make sure I buy Agri Beef?

Izzit just me — or is the Coeur d’Alene Press underplaying new developments in the Brannon court challenge? Today, the city’s request for a dismissal of Brannon’s suit was reported in a short story at the bottom of Page A-5. Do you suppose the Press brain trust now realizes that this dog no longer hunts and wants to put some distance between it and Brannon?

This is an awesome story. It is unbelievable really…no it has nothing to do with global warming, so ahead and give it a read.

The semester’s over and traffic is backed up as far as the eye can see and the bars are full because nobody—teacher or student—wants to remember this week or see this town for three more weeks.
Also, today I’m thankful for random acts of kindness, great friends and good music.
    How’s your day been?

Saw a letter in the CDA Press this morning in the Brannon v whomever by Jerry Weaver. Seems Mr. Weaver now wants to attack Mike Kennedy for “Chicago style politics” that I highly doubt were ever employed. So, since Obama from Illinois became president, EVERYTHING becomes Chicago style politics IF we disagree with something or with the outcome of the last election? CDA isn’t Chicago but, for anyone who has lived here long enough could also make the argument that CDA politics can carry a special brand of dirty.

Arch >> “could also make the argument that CDA politics can carry a special brand of dirty.”

That’s true but I should think pretty much common in all City politics everywhere. In Chigago, is “pay to play”. That is a whole new dimension of political misdoings.

No, not new, as old as the ages. It exists right here in good old Idaho, just ask Butch Otter and his highway cronies.

    “Chicago style politics”

To paraphrase hmoffsuite , “Chicago style politics” is the talking point and marching orders for the conservative foot soldiers, read Opencda.batsinthebelfry or the Press comments sections and thats is all the rage amongst the keyboard commandos. Sill and simplistic, just like their chief court jesters Beck & Palin.

  • moscow_minidoka on December 18 at 8:29 a.m.

Ok, who wants to wager on today’s Wild Card? Yesterday it wasn’t until 10 am, so today I’m placing my bet on 9:57 am.

  • Arch_Druid on December 18 at 8:30 a.m.

Only because it got brought to light for the first time in history, Hmoffsuite. It is however, nothing new. The Teapot Dome scandal would demonstrate a variation of that without doubt. Or pork barrel politics might be another incarnation of it. Or if you will campaign donations. The more you give, the more likely you will be heard when serious legislation begins. In politics, we are all looking at not only systemic corruption but also an auctioning off to the highest bidder whom the politician will ultimately be beholden to.

Will pay to play that put former Guv Blago out of office change how we do business in the political world over all? No.

  • hmoffsuite on December 18 at 8:35 a.m.

Phaedrus. Fwiw, I have never used the term “Chicago Style Politics”, ever, in any of my posts. Your paraphrase lacked any validity. You like the way politics are conducted in Chicago? Blago? Just curious.
