Huckleberries Online

Wild Card/Tuesday — 12.22.09

CindyH’s going to take over the helm of Huckleberries Online, beginning Wednesday morning until Monday, Jan. 4. She’ll post Wednesday and some Thursday and then again next Monday through Wednesday, with some posts on New Year’ Eve days. You’ll have to get by with Wild Cards on the holidays and weekends. I appreciate the year we’ve had together as we rebuilt Huckleberries Online into the blog it is today. The first order of business in the new year will to begin planning for Blogfest 2010 in mid-February when HBO turns 6 (which is like 60 in blog years). Now, I’ll post this Wild Card and depart with this: It’s all yours, Cindy …

So…I’m trying to picture myself “warming up in the bullpen.” I believe that’s a baseball metaphor. Or maybe some kind of cowboy euphemism.
What do you suppose the warm up for blog duties entails?
    I’m open to suggestions.

    Finger exercises ?

DH has one of those Norelco three-head electric razors. Parts have been discontinued and he really, really wants to keep this old thing. Is there someone in CDA who sharpens blades like that? I dont even know what to look under in the phone book …

You’ll need a duck’s back for all the water, which will come in handy for the flame throwing, which means you’ll have to plug in and unlock the cooler. Please check it for decaying matter. Make sure there is some. You wouldn’t want it to be comfy.

  • bpoole on December 22 at 10:01 a.m.

Lynne, I am not sure there is a person or business that specializes in electric razor sharpening, however, you may find that using a sharpening stone just might do the trick.

  • Duffer on December 22 at 10:09 a.m.

Lynne, see if you can find a model number on the razor and do a search on eBay. I bought a new set this way. The blades AND screens s/b replaced as sets. Good luck!

CindyH, are you cruising the net for partial clothed “firemen?” That may warm the cockles of your heart.

Some holiday traditions are so engrained in your senses that you can hardly imagine a future time without them. This year…once again, our wonderful Mayor delivered several rum cakes to all the departments in the City.
They are so delicious, and moist, that they are devoured in no time at all.
I cannot imagine what her kitchen must look like after making so many cakes. We are so thankful for our thoughtful Mayor and it is a huge bonus that she is an excellent cook. Should she choose to retire some day all future candidates will be questioned about their baking ability!

I have a question about the Obama care program. Can anybody explain to me where the Constitution gives the Congress the power to force me to enter into a contract to purchase something I don’t want to buy?

  • poolman on December 22 at 2:18 p.m.

Larry - Do you buy insurance for your car?

  • Stickman on December 22 at 2:40 p.m.

Thanks to the Mayor as well, she is very good for this city. Thanks also to Christie for her comment. I think what the Mayor does is admirable and she continues to make her mark.

  • wheels on December 22 at 2:47 p.m.

ChristieWood,The Mayor lives across the street from me and I don’t recall receiving rum cakes.Whatsupwithat?

  • Charlie on December 22 at 2:47 p.m.

Don’t states control auto insurance, not the feds and what if you don’t drive, do you still have to buy insurance? A mandate to buy health insurance will probably be challenged as unconstitutional.

  • poolman on December 22 at 3:02 p.m.

I wonder if Mayor Bloom makes her rum cake with one or two shots of rum. If she were in Utah the maximum would be one shot per cake, but it could be served with a low alcohol beer.

Actually I’m just having a flashback to a few nights ago sitting in a bar in SLC after a miserably long day of travel. I ordered a double Crown and Coke. This geeky bartender comes back, “we can only serve one once of alcohol at a time”, what about a shot and a beer?, “that is OK”, is it normal beer?, “What do you consider normal?”, well, for starters normal beer would contain 3.5-5% alcohol, “No, it’s low alcohol beer”, So I can have a shot and a low alcohol beer but not a double cocktail? “Yes”, can I have another Crown and Coke? Are you done with the first one”, almost, “I’ll need to take the glass before I can serve you a second”, you people are WEIRD, beam me up Scotty!

@poolman: The liquor laws in some of the southern counties of Idaho are just as restrictive.

I think Madison County (Rexburg/BYU Idaho) only has one establishment in the whole county (Applebees) that serves alcohol. Bonneville County (Idaho Falls) cannot serve hard alcohol and only serves beer and wine on Sunday. I think Canyon County might be the same as Bonneville County.

The problem I have is that the reason they want people to buy insurance is to prop up the other policies. Kind of like the government telling people who are strong swimmers during a shipwreak that they are required to let other people climb on top of them so the weak ones don’t drown and everybody can drown together.

  • christiewood on December 22 at 6:01 p.m.

Wheels it would be well worth your time to take a trip across the street and beg for a piece of rum cake. Last year I bought one of her cakes and a huckleberry pie at a charity auction. I took the pie to a dinner party(they loved it!) but kept the rum cake just for the family.
We probably should have shared it with the extended family but we were selfish. I am on vacation until next week. Merry Christmas to all.

  • spokelooneh on December 22 at 10:04 p.m.

I really don’t know if this fool can be ANY MORE embarrassing:

“Senator Roland Burris (D-IL) delivers a health-care inspired version of “Twas the night before Christmas” on the Senate floor this morning. … ”

    http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/12/22/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry6010248.shtml

It reads bad enough, but if you really want to box your own ears, watch him deliver it.

Uh-oh, looks like GOP Chairman “Hip-Hop” Mike Steele is in a spot of trouble:

“Poor Hip Hop Mike. It seems that he has been doing a little moonlighting for dollars while collecting a check from the GOP to make them the party of Lincoln again. Mike has been charging $8,000 a pop to speak at different venues while chairman of the GOP.

Hey Mike, I am not mad at ya. A brother has to live. Gators and those fly suits I see you sporting cost money. But the GOP crowd is not pleased.

“The former Maryland lieutenant governor, who was elected chairman of the GOP in January, has given a dozen speeches to corporate boards and colleges. He has charged $8,000 per appearance while at the same time collecting a salary of $223,000 as the leader of the party. The chairman’s paid speeches were first reported by the Washington Times.
“Richard Bond, who was chairman of the party from 1992 to 1993, said he was “shocked” Steele had accepted the money and that he “didn’t take a dime” from speaking fees during his tenure. A current member of the 168-member RNC, who did not want to blast Steele publicly, called the speeches a “bad idea.”’”

Now Mike, you and I both know that they don’t like you. They only put you out there because you were their version of his O ness. Now, as the president’s star dims, watch how yours will go dim right along with him. The republicans don’t need their own version of the articulate Negro anymore, because the one they feared so much is getting his arse handed to him in the polls. … ”

Busted by the conservative Washington Times (Moonies) no less.

My suggestion, give ‘til it hurts to the RNC.
