Monday Wild Card

My goodness, what a weekend! What with HBO figuring promimently in breaking news and all. OTV witnessed the aftermath of the Sherman Avenue shooting.  Bpoole played a role in connecting Meghann Cuniff to the Facebook sources. And all Sunday evening the blog buzzed as Hucksters uncovered additional bits and pieces of background information.

‘Tis armchair detective work to be sure, but we’ll all be watching this closely as the CDA PD completes their investigation.  Victim Brandon Burgess is doing better.Meghann offers the latest here.

Whew! DFO’s off for another week, so fasten your seatbelts Hucksters, it could be an interesting ride into the new year.

While I gather my thoughts, feel free to post your own below.

Hey Cindy- A polite reminder to post a few threads over the next couple of days about Idaho’s first bowl game in a million years.
    Possible thread topics:
The indignity of playing in Bronco Stadium on the Smurf Turf
How did Bowling Green get its name
Is the Humanitarian Bowl advancing Idaho’s human rights status?

According to the Jail website, Mr.Johnson is charged with murder. Does anyone know did the young man die?

  • spokelooneh on December 28 at 1:06 p.m.

If Burgess has died, certainly his next-of-kin have been notified, and Meghann’s sources at Harborview or CdA PD would have relayed that information. Likely just a mistake on the jail’s website. It’s obviously a crucial issue.

BTW, I don’t see anything new in the story linked here that’s anything different from what was posted last night.

Here’s a shout out to all those brave Iranian brothers and sisters trying to wrest their country from oppression. This link goes to a video which displays the sound of dissent utilizing the Ashura holiday. The sounds are haunting. Turning this holiday into a groundswell against the regime would be such poetic justice.

In a brief speech today regarding the airplane bomber matter, Obama also touched on the Iran situation. He used stronger language today and that pleased me. But, he seems reluctant to use the term ‘terrorist’ when speaking about the plane bomber. On that, I think he is dancing around and should take a firmer stance.

    Just sayin’ ….

  • Sisyphus on December 28 at 4:24 p.m.

What are you saying hmoff? That Bush screwed up yet again? That GITMO was a complete failure? That all the great evidence against these guys were bungled because of the zeal to torture brown people? That their prolonged stay in GITMO hardened them into everlasting hatred for the United States and because of it we have to kill them now? How’s your shining beacon now?

  • idawa on December 28 at 4:31 p.m.

just saw a new Boeing plane (possibly the Dreamliner) fly slowly by my office window being trailed by smaller chase jet - could possibly be taking marketing photos against a gorgeous red Seattle sunset. I’m sure S.Carolina may be cheap, but it’ll be tough recreating Seattle and Mt. Rainer is all those marketing materials …

  • hmoffsuite on December 28 at 4:33 p.m.

Draw your own conclusions, Sis. This Gitmo thing seems to be a little more complicated that what Obama had thought, huh?

  • Sisyphus on December 28 at 4:44 p.m.

Getting convictions of guilty men is what’s complicated since the evidence is tainted. Did Bush learn nothing from the OJ trial? But the very odd thing here is that Bush is the one that released these guys, not Obama.

  • hmoffsuite on December 28 at 4:50 p.m.

Sis >> ” Did Bush learn nothing from the OJ trial?”

Like most of us, I think he learned that ‘anything’ can happen at trial. That is why I question Holders decision to take the Gitmo guys and give them a trial in NYC. They are not entitled to the benefit of laws reserved for Americans. Like, OJ, they too could walk, due to cracks in our legal system.

  • hmoffsuite on December 28 at 5:17 p.m.

This kind of thinking is going to lead to more terrorist attacks on our own soil ……

“President Obama called the Flight 253 bomb plotter an “isolated extremist” but Al Qaeda has already claimed credit for the terrorist bombing attempt. According to Rove, Obama is trying to paint terror suspect as a lone wolf, but in fact he’s part of larger terror network.”

    http://www.thefoxnation.com/detroit-airliner-terror-plot/2009/12/28/obama-calls-terror-suspect-isolated-extremist-al-qaeda-claim

  • Arch_Druid on December 28 at 5:31 p.m.

Hmoffsuite, the dudes released in 2007 who can now claim to be behind this latest attack on an American airliner was about a year before Obama officially declared his run for office. And therefore, since he doesn’t as a Senator make foreign policy, you can hardly bring up such an issue now and try to hang it around his neck as an albatross. That was GW’s decision, not Obama’s. As for anything Karl Rove may say, I take his statements with a grain of salt. Rove is still eating sour grapes over a year after the GOP lost very seriously at the polls in 2008.

Oh yeah, why don’t we just get involved in a lot of partisan bickering rather than thanking the Gods that this latest terrorist plot was actually FOILED!

    Try again, Hmoffsuite, try again.

  • hmoffsuite on December 28 at 5:40 p.m.

Arch. I’m not laying any blame on anybody. Not Obama, not Bush. I’m just saying that this matter is something not to be taken lightly. These people have said they wanted to destroy us time and time again. It is a serious matter. If you don’t like what Karl Rove had to say, go listen to Obama say it himself. This attempt to blow up the plane is the second terrorist attack on Obama’s watch. Ft. Hood being the first. He should accept this one as a slap in the face, a wakeup call. Not brush it off.

  • spokelooneh on December 28 at 6:22 p.m.

No way of knowing whether these guys were radicalized by being tortured but were actually innocents gathered up in some sweep or handed over for the bonuses given to locals who fingered supposed Al-Queda operatives.

And I don’t trust the Saudi Royals on anything, just a bunch of filthy rich louts, hypocrites, misogynists and brutes.

  • hmoffsuite on December 28 at 6:54 p.m.

Let me get this straight. We have a terrorist attack on a plane going to Detroit, that was, fortunately, unsuccessful. The governement officials wait three hours to get around to telling Obama. (when he won the Nobel, they woke him up immediately). Then, the President waits three days to make a statement about the terrorist. When he does, he says it was just an isolated incident. Then, rather than declaring the guy a terrorist combatant, he is arested like he robbed a 7-11. He is given the legal protections reserved for our citizens and then lawyers up. Now, he has our legal system at his disposal to manufacture a nice legal defense. What’s wrong with this picture?

  • BigMike on December 28 at 7:16 p.m.

I think Joker has his tongue in his cheek. It has been said before but newspapers and their journalists are the watchdogs of the cummunity as well as reporting excesses in government. If they are objective, honest and accurate they serve the public well. Its not a job for wimps because each word they write is open for criticism. Also they need the instincts and training to sniff out a story and write it well, The average person on a blog can’t do that.

  • Cindy_H on December 28 at 7:34 p.m.

Well, yes BigMike, but no one has ever accused HBO of being peopled with “average” folks :-)

  • Phaedrus on December 28 at 8:34 p.m.

    What’s wrong with this picture?

Well, if you live in the United States of America and believe in the US Constitution, nothing.

  • Phaedrus on December 28 at 8:46 p.m.

The idiots on Opencda continue to attack Christie Woods over the grammar in the initial Police Department statement concerning the shooting incident on Sherman Avenue, obsessing over grammar while two men recover from gunshot wounds and a third man sits in jail.
No mention that the shooter was a supporter and contributor to city council wannabe Jim Brannon.

And while Bill McCrory seems absolutely beside himself over Ms. Woods alleged misuse of an apostrophe, he proceeds to tell pariah that Opencda can’t upload the 90+ page PD report because “We have about 8 MHz per document limit.”

Really, Bill? An 8 MHz limit? What are you a radio station? These morons are so clueless and lacking in even the least bit of self-awareness that they are incapable of seeing the irony in this comment.

  • spokelooneh on December 28 at 9:05 p.m.

Not needlessly frightening a HUGE traveling public at this time has to go into the equation regarding Obama’s remarks.

  • Escapee on December 28 at 10:07 p.m.

The newspaper in Eugene carried a brief article about the shooting in CDA, although it didn’t say exqctly where the shooting took place. It happened on Sherman Avenue? Anywhere near “Killer” Chillers?

  • JIMMYMAC on December 28 at 10:09 p.m.

On a much lighter side, I just witnessed the greatest Fantasy Football Championship of all time in one of my leagues. Opponent 1 was down huge with Adrian Peterson and Minn Kicker going against Opponent 2. He needed 4 yards of rushing or 13 yards receiving from Adrian Peterson OR a Minn FG to win with about 4 minutes left in regulation. He got neither with Minnestota in the red zone and Favre hitting Rice for TD to force OT. Heading into overtime, this would be a sinch if Minnesota got the ball. Chicago missed a 45 yard FG to give him life. Then, Adrian Peterson gets him the two points to win on a 16 yard reception……and fumbles the ball, negating the two points he had just earned to be crowned 2009 FFB champ. Chicago scores and Opponent 2 wins!!!!!

It was incredible if you are a FFB nut like me. If not, you probably think I am a total geek. Both are probably true.

  • Sam on December 28 at 10:10 p.m.

Amazing, Jimmy. All of our final games this year ended up being blowouts of enormous proportions. Nothing exciting there, but we had fun and I can’t wait until next year. Maybe then I’ll even make the playoffs, lol.

  • Phaedrus on December 28 at 10:45 p.m.

Escapee, NW corner of 3rd and Sherman.

  • hmoffsuite on December 29 at 5:36 a.m.

Phaedrus >> “What’s wrong with this picture?

Well, if you live in the United States of America and believe in the US Constitution, nothing.”

That is exactly my point. The terrorist neither lives in America nor is entitled to the US Constitution. And yet, Obama doesn’t seem to have a problem extending our constitutional rights to those with whom we are at war. Its shameful.

  • Arpie on December 29 at 12:36 p.m.

    So HMO,

They get our constitutional rights only after we win the war? I’m confused.

  • hmoffsuite on December 29 at 12:47 p.m.

Arpie >> “They get our constitutional rights only after we win the war? I’m confused.”

No, they get constitutional rights when or if they were to become American citizens. Not likely.

  • Phaedrus on December 29 at 1:07 p.m.

he seems reluctant to use the term ‘terrorist’ when speaking about the plane bomber. On that, I think he is dancing around and should take a firmer stance.

Because we all know that GWB and Dick Cheney proved talking tough is so effective. Give me a break.

  • Smacky on December 29 at 1:21 p.m.

Hmoffsuite, didn’t Bush extend those same rights to the shoe-bomber? Did you “shame” Bush then?

And, you mention that this is the second attempted terrorist attack since Obama took office, and that he should take it as a slap in the face. Do you realize how slaphappy the terrorists were with Bush?

    Get real.
