Rarely a dull moment in HBO-land. You know, when DFO returns I think I’ll need a vacation to recover from his vacation. Just saying.
But it’s a new day. I skipped my Wii workout because I’m thinking 62’s not a bad age and I’d hate to find out I’ve reached my seventies overnight. There’s still so much on my “Things to do before I turn 45 list.” Things like karaoke, starting a fire without a match, and learning to spell definitely without spellcheck. I’m going to the gym instead. Maybe I’ll ask for the senior discount.
Use this Wild Card to discuss what kind of discounts you deserve or anything else that comes to mind.

ARRRGGGH! I am SO mad at my computer! It’s all new, supposedly semi-state of the art and stuff (yeah, you can really tell I’m a computer expert), but for some reason now it won’t give me the option to “run” programs I download. Anyone know WTH (cleaner than WTF)?
Details: I have an emachines desktop, run Vista Home Premium, use Firefox as my browser (although I’m seriously contemplating switching to Google Chrome) and if you need any more info, please don’t hesitate to email or call. kendramama@gmail.com, email and I’ll give you my digits.
Sheesh… in fact, I’m so upset- this has been going on a week now- I’m working my way through an entire pint of Ben and Jerry’s Triple Caramel Chunk.
It wouldn’t have been so bad if I could’ve used any of the “help” lines/forums/threads… but for some reason, I cannot seem to give the right info to get accepted into any of them- I either don’t get my product ID# right (too many digits) or I don’t know the sub-model of the model, or since I was back behind the computer desk w/a flashlight trying to not choke on the dust bunnies on the blower back there on the back of the tower (at least I cleaned THOSE puppies out!) I must not have gotten the Product Key correct- again, too many digits. S’posed to only be 24, mine has 25 according to what I could read.
Like I said, ARRRGGGHH!
Hope everyone else’s morning’s going better than mine. :-(
Cabbage Boy on December 29 at 9:38 a.m.
Kendra, if you are using Firefox, just go to Tools>option and look at the main tab. There is a “Show downloads” check box and I suspect the “close when finished” is checked. Uncheck that and you should be able to run them.
Don’t bother with the emachines help forums, just google your problem and you should see many good tips. Or come to HBO for the best advice of all. :)
Kendramama on December 29 at 9:57 a.m.
Thanks, CB- tried that, and you were right- it was checked. Now is the real test- I’m going back to tucows.com and attempting to download their spybot freeware.
Fingers crossed! (although I guess that’ll make it a bit difficult to type….)
Kendramama on December 29 at 10:31 a.m.
Okay… didn’t exactly FIX the problem… it still just pops up that old-school looking grey box that says “save” instead of “run”; and it still saves to one of my Pictures folders (Cool Album Covers, actually) if I let it… however, I figured out how to copy the file name at the bottom, click on Downloads instead, then install it into there. Then, I double-click on the icon of whatever I just put in there, and the normal (give permission to run this file?) deal pops up, then all the other bs that goes along with a new program install.
So, yay! Circumventing the problem might not be quite as good as solving it completely, but at least I get what I want in the end.

A friend of mine is flying from NYC to Edmonton and reports the following: “I’m disheartened though not surprised at new regulations that require we spend the entire flight from NYC to Toronto, and the last hour from Toronto to Edmonton, in our seats, without anything in our laps, not even a book; nor of being allowed to the bathroom only with escort; and to have our one carry-on bag each in the overhead compartment unavailable to us.”
Wow, not even a book? And now flight attendants will be spending the entire flight escorting people to the bathroom?
Do you feel safer?

This plane bomber matter is getting worser and worser for the administration. First, of course, was the ‘the system worked’ remark from Janet Napaltiano. That will go down with Bush’s comment on the aircraft carrier as an all timer. Now, the CIA has said that they talked to this bomber fellow way back in August. And, the kids father went to the US officials not once but THREE times. And, he still got on the plane to America. No checked baggage, one way ticket, paid in cash. Major failure in our security system and notice is being taken.
idawa on December 29 at 4:01 p.m.
although the president of the Foundation for a Better Life is a Mormon, it is not a Mormon organization. It is bank rolled by some Denver conservative billionaire who was/is big pals with GWB, etc … Torture, pass it on? The LA Times did a story on it a while back, but I’m not about to dig through the internet to find it …
nic on December 29 at 4:05 p.m.
I always thought the same thing as scootermom since the Foundation comercials have the same prodution style as the free bible commercials created by the LDS church.
But the foundation for a Better Life isn’t Mormon. They don’t accept donations and their purpose seems to be (primarily) a pay it forward type of deal.
The man who funds the Foundation (Philip Anschutz) got rich in oil, rail, and real-estate; helped start MLS; is part owner of several sport franchises; is a majority owner of Regal Entertainment Group; has production credits in many Walden Media films, helped fund the Discovery Institute in Seattle, and is pretty much an all-around rich dude.
You’d probably like the guy, hmo… you should google him.

Nic. That homecoming queen segment where the Down syndrome gal wins almost makes me cry to watch it. Very touching, imo.
spokelooneh on December 29 at 4:21 p.m.
I agree with you hmoffsuite that the spin attempted by the Admin. is really quite bad. However, it wouldn’t have mattered who was the president, this was clearly an intelligence failure caused by various branches holding onto information to the exclusion of other agencies.
And didn’t TSA have Ted Kennedy on the no-fly list? While that may serve as fodder for a host of jokes, the joke is on the flying public because the TSA is terminally incompetent.
As I said early on, inasmuch as his father was a member of the elite in Nigeria, had been in touch with his son at a close level, and saw him “go radical”, and duly reported such, the guy would be on the no-fly list and barred from getting a visa into the U.S. The UK barred him. Now you’d EXPECT that the government would fix the damn thing, but they’re too busy playing CYA and pointing fingers.

I don’t know about you all…..but I am seeing a pattern. A pattern wherein our government has KNOWN about these terrorists….and do nothing except take away OUR freedoms and OUR liberties. My, my, my how convenient. Ft. Hood Shooter? Yeah….they knew all about him. 9/11? I give to you OPERATION ABLE DANGER….they had those guys fingered quite a while before 9/11, but…oh well. Just 3000 dead people.

So everytime these terrorists strike, we the people, lose a bit more of our freedom and we WILLINGLY give it to them in the name of security. So even when the strike fails……we pay. Terrorism wins and apparently terrorism WORKS. A nation of damned fools who ACTUALLY THINK the government will protect you. Either 1. They don’t want to protect us. or 2. They are too STUPID to protect us. I don’t know which is worse………
empyrius on December 29 at 6:28 p.m.
CB states, “We need some revolts across the nation in the primaries next year.” So you are going to repair something broken by using the broken thing to fix itself? That does not compute!!!
You can have either “freedom” or security; and the funniest thing is that our American empire robs us of both! So a portion of Americans benefit, directly or indirectly, from constant warfare, but the far greater loss is to “freedom” itself. Western nations, America in particular these last fifty years, have been meddling in the Middle East for one reason or another (e.g., oil, Israel, “national interests”) for the past hundred years, and while we do have enduring military bases and oil fields to show for it, we also have a stagnating airlines industry and personal telephone/internet records subject to governmental oversight “just b/c”. Now I know if you are not doing anything “wrong” you should not worry about Big Brother being privvy to every facet of your life, I hear that; but then do not speak of “freedom” again . . .
Do you think Osama actually thought he could militarily destroy the United States? No he didn’t. But if enough little people are terrorized they will gladly allow the government to take any steps necessary to protect them! Goodbye “freedom” hello American military-industrial public/private corporatism! And the starving American masses cannot join the military and/or mercenary forces quick enough, to destroy “the terror” over there, while ones’ innner terror, here, in the “homeland”, can no longer be assuaged by “God”, so money, anti-depressants, and Tiger Woods are abundant on the “free” market (well, anti-depressants and Tiger Woods anyway).
Same as the “war on drugs”. A portion of Americans benefit, directly and indirectly, from perpetual war, and as long as they can have a couple bottles of wine, beers, or even some whiskey after their ‘long hard day’, by all means let us persecute “evil” marijuana smokers, I hear that; but then do not speak of “freedom” again . . .
Your government, big business, and their Hollywood conspirators brainwashed your grandmother into believing if a black guy smokes some weed white women are not safe and that this was a grand communist plot …; and in varying degrees these irrational sentiments are what still keeps marijuana illegal!
I suppose the only step in hypocrisy left is to allow cops who drunkenly hit and run citizens to sue the state for being “unfair” b/c they lost their job …: har har har har!
“I am an alcoholic [but those pot smokers are “evil”] your honor, now give me my four million dollars …”: har har har har.
Tis the same kind of irrational thinking that seeks to destroy “terror” that seeks to save people from themselvesl Or is it “irrational”? More than likely is it simply some people wanting power over others? These modern Middle Eastern “terrorists” started with Zionists bombing the British, and now fighting “terror” is Israel’s raison d’ etre: ironic no? There was no problem with marijuana smokers until the government said we are “evil”, and now combating marijuana is the reason for half of our domestic policing agencies being: ironic no?
I can go on . . .
You can have either “freedom” or security, not both.

Proof that government workers just don’t have a clue.
“Today, 46% of government employees say the economy is getting better while just 31% say it’s getting worse. Among those who work in the private sector, the numbers are reversed: 32% say better and 49% worse.”
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/business/indexes/rasmussen_consumer_index2/two_economies_government_workers_optimistic_private_sector_not
Then again, maybe they don’t need one, they get paid anyway.
“Twenty-four percent (24%) of government employees rate the economy as good or excellent while just nine percent (9%) of those in the private sector are so upbeat.”
empyrius on December 29 at 10:19 p.m.
Is that “spirito”, or, “spiritu” fortboise?
Indeed Spencer! And that well over half of government is comprised of (ex)military, especially among the lower-level bureaucrats, we will find that these people, and their families, will murder anybody that stands in the way of their government: quite scary actually!
All of them live off government checks; the government, and their corporate masters, will not let the banks call in past-due that which is on “their own”, and all that leaves left, is: who will die for empire!
I will pacifistly die for Christ, but I will not violently die for a government!
