Quotable Quote: Not only did “The Boss” nearly die trying to get his old ass up on the piano Super Bowl Sunday, but in a dramatic turn of events, old Bruce found himself singing a couple of octaves higher after accidentally slamming his nads into the camera after a 5-foot knee slide. The “Glory Days” are over, and “The Boss” should retire — Levi, UI Argonaut. More Off The Cuffs.
Question: Is it time to put a fork in Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band?

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who thought he sounded winded. Every post I read, said he was great. I happen to have the most gigantic crush on him and cringed when I heard him at half time.

Of course, personally, I put a fork in him when he went overboard with the Obama promoting and the Bush bashing. Stevie Wonder did an Obama set in the middle of his concert this summer. No place for that, imo. I really dislike celebrity editorials in the middle of a concert. Seems only the liberals give them, tho.

“Seems only the liberals give them, tho.”
Such sweeping generalizations… not to mention completely FALSE.
After all, GW Bush had some famous supporters: Toby Keith, Charlie Daniels, Jessica Simpson…

Seriously, one concert where his performance was subpar and that makes someone demand he retire? I cry bull! I saw the Boss live in concert three years ago, and he jumped around stage with energy to burn for well over two hours and was doing so three times a week. Most performers half his age don’t put on such an energetic show!! One mistake and we demand he end it all, not even pull it back just a little to something we’d expect from a 40yo (much less a 58yo)???
Demanding jerk.
I’m going to see him again in April with the E Street Band, and Levi can eat his own shorts for all I care, I’m not going to let his whiny little demands get in the way of my fun.

Hmooff - I would add to nic’s list those famous actors RONALD FREAKIN’ REAGAN and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Also, Bruce Willis and Stephen Baldwin.
Seriously, why do we demand people surrender their right to have and share political opinions the moment they become famous for something else? If you’ve got the right to rant on this blog, why shouldn’t Bruce Springsteen or Stevie Wonder have a similar right? It’s your own fault if you pay attention or if you can’t ignore five minutes of politics to enjoy an hour of music.

“I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who thought he sounded winded”.
That’s how he always sounds IMO.

Take Bob Dylan, who is now a Grumpy Old Man. Take Neil Young, who is pretty much turning out to be the nutty, slightly crazy Senior Citizen neighbor down the road…not far behind them is Bruce Springsteen, who’s still trying to sell that tough-guy-from-Jersey-with-his-sleeves-rolled-up shtick. If ‘The Boss’ was promoting his new album, why were two of the songs he did during the S’bowl, songs from his 1975 ‘Born To Run’ album? And finally, Steve Van Zant has worn that idiotic bandanna thing on his head for what, 3 decades now? He’s probably balder/shinier than Scott Van Pelt, whose skull reflects the stage lights with nuclear power on the ESPN set every day.
I don’t despise Springsteen, even though it’s obvious he’s never learned to sing. He has questionable pitch, and tends to get really lyrically overblown on his more epic numbers. He’s more of a rock-and-rollish one-trick pony. “One trick’s all that horse can do”, Paul Simon sang once upon a time. I do have a lot of Bruce Springsteen’s albums. I bought them all second-hand. I found a copy of ‘Born To Run’ in almost MINT condition for a buck at Goodwill. Someone must have played it once, didn’t like it, and gave it away. I’ve played it maybe once or twice over the last 20 years.
Finally, I bought a DVD of Springsteen in concert. After the 3rd or 4th song, I was bored silly. I guess there are those who consider Springsteen to be the spirit of rock and roll…and sure, he’s to be admired for keepin’ on-keepin’ on, but his music tends to get on my NERVE.

Yeah, well IE, I’m sure there’s a lot of music you enjoy that would get on my nerves. To each their own. I enjoy the Boss, and I’m not alone - I went to buy tickets to one of his New England shows, and all three had sold out in under 48 hours. :_(
I think he did two songs from Born to Run because he only had 12 minutes and, like any good businessman, mixed what we know, love and want with the new product he’s trying to sell. He easily could have done a set of four hits from his last four albums (well, from three of the four, anyway).

It was time for Bruce to retire when he ditched the hot model for Patty Scialfa and made that God-awful, mind-numbing album known as “Nebraska.”

That Bond avatar looks like a cross between David Lee Roth and Freddie Mercury. (shudder) As far as music, what we like, what we don’t like…viva la difference, I guess. For me, Bruce’s music is just dry, Dry, DRY. I’m more of a progressive-rock fan…and for more of a balance between lyrics and music. Bruce is more of a word-man. I’m not that big a fan of Dylan, either, for the same reason. I’d rather listen to Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Triumvirat, Focus, Starcastle, Styx and others who mine the melodic-rock vein.
My fave Springsteen albums are “Born To Run”, but only about half of that…I thot “Born in the USA” was a great album, although I don’t like the title song, which features that annoying riff over and over ad nauseum…I thot “The River” was pretty good, too…

My favorite Bruce albums were Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town.
I am also a huge prog rock fan, along with Metal. In the prog rock genre, Rush, ELP, and Saga are among my favorites, and I do like Styx a lot, although I would call them more of a traditional Classic Rock band than prog rock, although they did have a conceptual element to their albums, similar to Rush. Maybe they are prog rock….. Or maybe Rock Opera…..
As for the Freddie Mercury reference, I loved Queen.
