Item: Porn can be a mixed blessing/Chris Bidiman, UI Argonaut
More Info: Porn provides a fantasy. It creates in the minds of the viewer a different environment filled with sexual intimacy, desire and a lack of repercussions. However, this is not license to attempt engaging in sex with any anonymous person one wishes. Actors in adult videos are consenting adults (at least 18 years old). These individuals enter into every scene knowing what they are expected to do with a sense of security and confidence.
Question: Do you see anything positive re: pornography?

On a side note, I wonder what Chris’s parents think about this article.

No.
Unless one considers the employment opportunities for those with poor acting skills.
It creates in the mind of the viewers greater and greater unfulfilled desires. Kind of like the addiction to a drug that creates the cravings that can never be sated.

oh where do I even start???? Let me start on the production end because I know that there are probably plenty of happily married people out there who are gonna claim that porn is only a positive thing and just like chocolate chip cookies it is all in the mindset of the user.
For every Ron Jeremy out there who has turned the ole porn career into something lucrative, there are many, many more who get into the porn business because they are runaways, abused, etc etc etc. I would argue probably moreso the women than the men, although I am sure it is not a hard and fast rule there. Can you say “exploitation”, boys and girls??? I suspect if you sit down and talk with people who are no longer in the porn business you will hear a very different story than from those who are desperately trying to rationalize something that may have been a last ditch survival tactic. Or something that comes out of a background of abuse and pitifully low self esteem…
on the user end: I think that even people who use porn and do not become addicted to it, change their mindset. There is a creation of HUGE expectations that a mere mortal human being can never meet. I say the same thing about romance novels, I might add. Romance novels are soft porn for women, by and large. Both create a subtle dissatisfaction with ones mate.
Even if you honestly, truly do not feel that porn does anything but enhance your life though, think about this: do you really want to support an industry that is built on the exploitation of others???

Question: Do you see anything positive re: pornography?
No.It just keeps people who are addicted to sex working and
is a detriment to society.

Probably nothing at all - Chris is the sex columnist for the Argonaut, and used to work in an adult toy shop. If his parents had any embarrassment over his activities, they would have gotten over it years ago.
I know plenty of people who like a good porno every now and again, and it doesn’t erode their relationship with each other or to their families and religion. I was interested in it when I was 19 years old and sex was not something I was having… my interest in watching other people have sex disappeared when I had the opportunity to practice it myself. Different strokes for different folks, y’know.
It’s just like anything else - the people who have problems with it are the ones who are obsessed or addicted - just like alcohol, crack, gambling, you name it. It’s not my cup of tea, but I certainly don’t think it’s anything particularly shocking.

Porn gives us great music, great acting, awesome camera angles, catchy movie titles, and realistic depictions of the most intimate of acts.
What’s the down side?

No. It’s an industry based on fantasy and exploitation. Nothing good can come of that combination.

I’m with the ladies on this one; false expectations and exploitation say it all.

eh, it provides jobs and entertainment. I view porn in the same vein as guns, in the hands of most people it is relatively benign and legal, but in than hands of some it can be disastrous. My wife will have nothing to do with porn and forbids it in the house, but I know lots of people from college who still ‘use’ porn and who are what I consider well-adjusted.
I don’t argue that the industry creates false expectation and exploits its performers as well. I would add, that I believe that the male customers and the male performers (who earn a fraction of what female performers earn) are truly on the receiving end of that exploitation. The industry take people who have relatively little skill or talent and offers them the ability to make a decent living (at least for some time). You could debate that it extracts a high cost given the potential of future problems getting another job if their previous career is uncovered, but I will surmise that most of the actor take that into account when they willingly sign up. And, as far as false expectations, a lot of hollywood fiction creates false expectations. I, for one, was pretty dissapointed by my first courtroom experience given all the legal dramas I’ve watched growing up. But, if you can’t separate fiction from reality, than you probably shouldn’t be watching porn or using other any type of media either….
So, I think it is a pretty seedy industry, stained by exploitation. Then again, I prefer to have it legal where it has at least some semblance of legitimacy and the benefits that entails (see MM’s post about drug testing, policing, etc) than the alternative.
