Argonaut: Make An Effort To Recycle

Recycling is something most people will agree is a good idea, but a fraction of those people will actually follow through. The biggest excuse for not recycling is inconvenience. For some, it’s hard enough to get their trash in a garbage receptacle, let alone distinguish what is recyclable and then find a place to properly dispose of it. Today, the University of Idaho produces about 350 tons of carbon-equivalent emissions in its waste stream. To get an idea of how much students are throwing away that could be recycled, just ask one of the people who sorted through campus garbage to remove 11.5 tons of recyclables in the last year/Sydney Boyd, UI Argonaut. More here.

Question: How much do you recycle?

We recycle but many neighbors don’t. I heard tell they were not going to require us to separate anymore.

I’m a spotty recycler at best. Paper, aluminum, cardboard are easy to take care of curbside. Glass has to go to collection points, so I tend to just toss it.

True, Sis. Boise is going to single-source recycling. No more sorting. I’m not sure of the timeline and what exactly will be included. It sounds like City has been working with Allied Waste and citizens to put the plan together.

On a side note, one of the components of the the contract with Allied was that they purchase Compressed Natural Gas trucks to comply with Boise’s greenhouse gas efforts. Good deal all the way around.

Man with the glass you go through, you should pile it up. But then you’d be making weekly trips. Like I do. Its ridiculous for them not to pick up glass. Will glass be part of the new gig?
