Local Blogs — 2/9/09

In Priest Lake over the weekend, Pecky Cox/As The Lake Churns was on hand for the 40th annual running of the U.S. Pacific Coast Championship Races. She has an interview with  seventysomething musher Joe Hawley, who returned to the races after a 25-year hiatus, here.

Late Phone Calls: Polite People don’t call after 9 p.m. Any time the phone rings in our house after 9, it jars us. Because we wonder who is hurt or what is going on. We don’t call people after 9 pm unless it is a prearranged deal. We don’t call people with children after 8 p.m. As we know they are in the process of getting the kids thru baths, beds stories and etc. We just don’t feel comfortable with late calls/Simple Mind. More here.

Question: How late is the latest you’ll make a casual phone call to someone?

Depends on who I’m calling. My mom raised me with a similar 9pm mindset, but for many of my college-aged friends, 9pm is pretty early. If I’m just calling to chat, I try to use 10pm as a guide for my similarly-aged friends and 9pm as a guide for more professional contacts or family friends. If I’m looking to hang out with someone else on campus or something like that, I won’t think twice calling before 11. Even 11:30 with certain individuals.

Depends on the person. I have friends who I could make a casual phone call to after midnight since they were night owls like I was. Most people tho I usually won’t call after 9pm.

I don’t call people. I just don’t. I’ve never in my life called someone just to talk. There’s always a reason for my call, and a damn good one at that. I don’t know why I’m like that. Maybe it’s because I hate the telephone with the black burning hate of a million suns. Or maybe I’m just shy and don’t talk very well.

10, but between 9 and 10 is a judgment call. No calls before noon on Sundays.

Before noon on Sundays I’m not home - but I hear ya on Saturdays. I’m sleeping, don’t bug me.

I’m not a phone person either. And I truly HATE solicitor calls - especially on Sundays. Sundays are a NO PHONE RINGING ANYWHERE IN THE HOUSE day. This Mommy is not a happy camper with phone use on Sundays - I think that’s why my sons really wanted to grow up and move away. :)
