Wild Card/Tuesday — 2/10/09

In the news this evening, Wall Street greeted the news of the Senate bailout vote today by plummeting 382 points here. Michelle Obama strikes a pose for Vogue here. A Pew poll puts support for the stimulus package at only 51% here. 8 involved in a party with pot-smoking Olympian Michael Phelps have been arrested here. And the Wild Card remains in play …

Geithner should not have been confirmed as the Sec of the Treasury. He lacks moral authority and can not be taken as a man of his word. For him to deliver his speech today with no specifics is all too Obamaesque. As I type this, the dow is currently down 350 pts indicating a disappointment to our financial markets. Without the confidence of our financial markets, our economy will suffer a deepened and prolonged economic distress.

Well the prescient Dr. Doom has issued another nasty proclamation. He says some of the biggest banks are “effectively insolvent” and will have to be nationalized. Anybody got a way to avoid this?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CindyH!! Cheers to you….

Question for Sis. Is it a coincidence the the NBC networks supported Obama so strongly and now the CEO of GE (owner of NBC) is appointed to Obamas board of economic advisors? Or, payback? CHANGE something we can all believe in, huh?

CindyH: Some of us just didn’t know, go figure. Happy Birthday to one of the great bloggers of all time. An award maybe, we’ll think of something. It was a pleasure to meet you this past year, I hope to see you soon.

Hi Stickman, How are you? I’ve been meaning to make it by and pop open one of those brown bottles Bent left for me at your place so you and I could partake of that golden elixir. You gonna be out on Saturday afternoon?

  • danofthecommunity on February 10 at 6:35 p.m.

I had a visit with a new Dr. today. After he went through the medical history stuff on the computer (which I had already filled out once on paper) and was looking at the print out he shook his head and said, “I can’t believe some of the default responses that come out on these things.”

He said one of the items on my history said something like, “Patient denies possibility of current pregnancy.”

I said I was absolutely sure I couldn’t be pregnant…after all, I had already had that vasectomy years ago…:).

One reason that the DOW plummeted? The bank stock being in flux according to CNN because it was no longer “free and easy money” and no accountability. I can only wonder who Obama should have appointed if not Geithner. Anyone coming out of the financial industry over the last 8 years would hardly have any “moral authority.” As Obama said in Indiana, if he tried to appoint only those people who never made a mistake, he’d have no one working in his administration. Looks like it is bite the bullet at this time.

  • Cindy_H on February 10 at 7:19 p.m.

    Mmmm…bacon!
Thanks OTV. Hope you make the drive to Zola on the 19th. Without you, happy hour won’t be nearly so happy. And maybe you could get a Washington column out of your visit!
And thank you Stickman. Last year wasn’t so great, but meeting you was definitely a highlight :-)

  • Stickman on February 10 at 7:48 p.m.

keithincda: Yes, I will be out Saturday afternoon, and yes, I have saved you two bottles of the famous brew that Bent makes so easily. It will be a pleasure of course to see you again, as always.

  • Stickman on February 10 at 8:06 p.m.

CindyH: The 19th?, maybe a visit, let me know.

  • Sparky on February 10 at 8:12 p.m.

Cindy, Happy Birthday. My daughter’s birthday is today. Glad to know she is in good company.

  • Cindy_H on February 10 at 8:47 p.m.

Sparky! It’s hard to find others with a Feb 10 BD! I hope this is Princess you’re referring to. If so, she’s my kindred spirit :-)

Stickman: A group of hucksters are meeting at Zola, 22 W Main Ave, Spokane at 5PM. Stella will be there, as will Bent, keith, Kevin T., Jeanie and I. And maybe a few surprises. Would be wonderful to have you join us.

DFO - Thanks for all the Palouse news yesterday. Trying to keep me from canceling the SR in favor of the Tribune? ;)

It looks like today’s stock rebound is due to the Republican opportunities in the House. I sure hope our new Democrat overlords are taking notes on how to really fix the economy.

  • Arch_Druid on February 11 at 9:25 a.m.

Haven’t checked in with CNN to see what the stocks are doing on the 11th of Feb. 2009. But I do need to correct Dave’s commentary: Geithner rolled out a bail out package, the stimulus bill was only now coming up for a vote. Hours before the vote itself on the Senate version of the stimulus package, Geithner unveiled what he intended to do with the remainder of that bailout package that the Senate had initially voted for back in the fall. These are two different proposals. The markets reacted only to Geithner’s proposals and not to the stimulus package.

So, if Geithner’s proposal on the bailout package for the financial sector requires legislative action, that will have to come later.

Here’s something interesting. In light of the Daschle and Geithner tax controversies, Politico surveyed all 100 senators about how they prepare their taxes and whether or not they’v e ever made mistakes or owed back taxes. Risch responded; Crapo did not. Several senators who had screamed bloody murder about Daschle also screamed bloody murder that anyone would dare ask them the same questions.

    The senator-by-senator breakdown: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0209/18512.html

Sounds like a case of hypocrisy, TT. Nice research.
