The woman who reported a rape at North Idaho College last week has been ticketed by the city police department for filing a false report. She was charged with the misdemeanor offense after detectives re-interviewed her Tuesday. “We discovered that her report did not match the facts that we uncovered,” said Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Christie Wood. “At this point we’ll let the court process take place.” Police received a report Thursday alleging that a male dressed in women’s clothing waited for her in the first floor bathroom of the Meyer Health Science Building and raped her there on the morning of Jan. 30/CDA Press. Question: What affect does a fake report like this have on the community?

Shame on those immature attention-seeking liars who file false reports. Every time a false report is filed it hurts the credibility of real victims and makes getting convictions even more difficult. Those who file false reports should be required to attend a course that, to some degree, details what a real rape victim suffers. Even though that would only scratch the surface of the life long pain that is endured, it would hopefully have some sort of impact on the fakers.

I agree with Kibby. They should have to attend some rape counseling with actual victims. The kind of counseling that lasts for years and years. So 30 years down the road, they can see that it still affects the actual victims.

Yes, Kibby. False reports make it more difficult for women, and men, to report and successfully prosecute real rapes. Reporting a rape is not like making a crank phone call. This is serious business.

exactly. hurts the cred of real rape victims.
My hubby thought right from the get go that this wasn’t the real deal because the chick was claiming it was a “dating relationship” but didn’t know the guy’s name??? I mean who doesn’t know the names of the people they date????
A friend of mine was totally skeeved out because she had been in that very restroom not five minutes before the supposed attack.

The next time someone who has heard of this “rape” sits on a jury were some man is accused of rape do they wonder if it really happened. It makes it so much harder to come to a true answer of guilt or innocence. Convict and maybe send an innocent person to prison?

I’m more or less in line with all the comments above on this.
However, this report should never have seen the light of day. The media should not have sensationalized the story before a proper investigation was conducted and the CPD should not have allowed this report to reach the media before a proper investigation was conducted. Those are the two somewhat rational entities in this incident. The woman is obviously COOKOO.

Poolman,
The report has never been released and no press releases were generated. We are very sensitive to protecting potential victims from embarrassment.
If we believed the community was at risk from a violent predator, the media would have been contacted immediately.
The media plays an important role in informing our community. Law Enforcement relies on their cooperative role of getting inofrmation out to the public
In this case an alert was sent out by NIC (per federal law) to the entire campus. That type of alert always makes it’s way to the media.

Cristie - Now that you mention it - I think I recall seeing this on “scanner traffic”, so DFO is obviously to blame for the leaks / public knowledge of this false accusation.
JUST KIDDING!!!
(Thanks for clearing that up - I apologize for pointing fingers and making a false assumption)
Actually I’ve been professionally trained on how to deliver information to the media, particularly in a crisis situation. So I get the whole idea of informing the public through the media. Basically, we say as little as possible whilst keeping them happy. :)

Poolman; I pulled that rape alert off the North Idaho College Web site. Not Scanner Traffic. The campus was on full alert as a result of a rape report. That’s news. That the woman was caught in a lie is also news.
