Just a thought, but if you often drive off the freeways onto the old highway systems like US 10, 2 etc. and cross a concrete bridge. stop and look at the bridge abutment. chances are, it will have a date, and a reference to the “CCC” Civilian conservation corps. Most of the prewar (WW11) bridges were built during the Roosevelt era by these young men that would have otherwise been homeless and out of work.
While I’m not an advocate of socialism, we seemed to have weathered that storm, and WW11 created the opportunity to recover our capitalistic principles. One can only hope that our government will act as wisely now as it did back then. Unfortunately, heavy industry is what brought us out of the “Great Depression,” and we’ve shipped all of those jobs overseas, so that the Asian economy could benefit. I’m not sure what lever we have to climb out of this one.
