UN: It’s ‘Democratic’ Party, People

While it is currently in vogue for Republicans to use the term “Democrat Party” it really isn’t grammatically correct*. So, for the Superintendent of Public Instruction to use it speaks volumes about the man who heads up education in Idaho. What is especially ironic is this quote from Sup. Luna; “Elections have consequences.” Indeed they do/Unequivocal Notion.

Question: Do Idaho Republicans, like Luna, refer to the other major political party as “Democrat Party” to annoy Democrats? Or because they don’t know better?

Of course they do. It is annoying. Kind of like when they refer to Walt Minnick as Walter.

However, it’s not just Idaho Republicans. It’s prevelant on the national level, too. I can’t remember who started it, but I think it was either Newt or Rush.

Pahleese…it’s a colloquialism, possibly born of ignorance (an ignorance shared by Dems and Repubs equally), but with no intent. Sheesh…what a lame topic for UN to get worked up about.

I think Luna is not qualified for his job. And his ignorance shows.

I thought it was a cute little nickname, a sign of endearment.

I hope I don’t loose sleep over this.

When we start calling the Republican Party the Republicanic Party, I’ll start calling the Democrat Party the Democratic Party.

  • Transplanted_Texan on February 18 at 5:50 p.m.

I think it started out of ignorance - I mean, Republicans are in the Republican Party, but Democrats aren’t in the Democrat Party - and when they saw the effect it has, they ran with it.

And to correct JamesBond’s foolish error: When we start calling the Republican Party the Repub Party, I’ll start calling the Democratic Party the Democrat Party. 007, surely you realize that democratic is a word and republicanic is not… I mean, no one says that democracy is a democrat thing… don’t be a doofus, it doesn’t suit you.

  • JamesBond on February 18 at 6:51 p.m.

Okay, then, on the ballots, let’s actually say “Democratic” next to the candidate’s name, instead of “Democrat.”

  • Transplanted_Texan on February 18 at 7:18 p.m.

The party name and the personal descriptor are not the same thing. In that instance, saying “Democratic” instead of “Democrat” would be like saying “Idaho” instead of “Idahoan.” IE, ‘This is Thom, he’s an Idaho.”

  • Transplanted_Texan on February 18 at 7:21 p.m.

Similarly, Americans aren’t from American… Americans are from America… why do the party and party members have to be called the exact same thing? Why does the Democratic Party’s name and grammatical structure have to mirror the Republicans’? That’s the strangest demand…

    To: Mr. James Bond,

Dear Sir, There is a difference between an adjective and a noun. Democratic is an adjective, Democrat is a noun, Republican is both.*

    *(DFO, better?)

  • Transplanted_Texan on February 18 at 7:42 p.m.

Thom, so much more succienct and to-the-point than I.

    Durf.

  • JamesBond on February 18 at 8:03 p.m.

This really cracks me up. Personally, I think we’d all breathe easier if we still called our parties “Whigs” and “Federalists” and, my favorite, “Anti-Federalists.”

  • JamesBond on February 18 at 8:04 p.m.

Why not go with “Republicans” and “Anti-Republicans,” or, if you prefer, “Democratics” and “Anti-Democratics?”

  • Transplanted_Texan on February 18 at 8:53 p.m.

Well I do feel like we’re moving towards common ground now… we could reflect their animal symbols and call them the Jackass and Fat*** parties… or the EBTB and the ABTB (Everywhere but the Bedroom and Anywhere but the Bedroom) parties…

  • JamesBond on February 18 at 9:21 p.m.

What about “Vulcans” and “Romulans?” That would be cool. Plus, Vulcans and Romulans are creepily similar, yet incredibly different, much like our parties. Politicians all have pointy ears, and while Vulcans and Romulans are really smart, our politicians try to sound smart. Personally, I think Democrats would be Vulcans, and Republicans would be Romulans. Of course, the Republicans are down right now and have nothing remotely as effective as a Cloaking Device, but even if they did, the Vulcans are clever enough and have some strange powers that would probably negate it. Of course, Bill Clinton would be the real human captain, bagging all the babes on the side while the brainiacs try to figure out where the dylitheum crystals are at and whatnot.

  • Transplanted_Texan on February 18 at 9:26 p.m.

The war-like Romulan Republicans versus the logical rational Vulcan Democrats… I like it!

  • Transplanted_Texan on February 18 at 9:26 p.m.

And Pat Buchanan is a Klingon…

  • Nick_Adams on February 18 at 11:34 p.m.

Actually, Pat Buchanan aspires to be a Borg. He’s currently a tribble—cute, fuzzy and not a threat until he breeds.

  • scootermom on February 19 at 7:18 a.m.

    Are Libertarians the Ferengi?

  • Transplanted_Texan on February 19 at 8:09 a.m.

Buchanan as “cute”? I don’t know about that…
