Item: ‘Slumdog millionaire rules the Oscars with 8 prizes/AP
More Info: “Slumdog Millionaire” took the best-picture Academy Award and seven other Oscars on Sunday, including director for Danny Boyle, whose ghetto-to-glory story paralleled the film’s unlikely rise to Hollywood’s summit. The other top winners: Kate Winslet, best actress for the Holocaust-themed drama “The Reader”; Sean Penn, best actor for the title role of “Milk”; Heath Ledger, supporting actor for “The Dark Knight”; and Penelope Cruz, supporting actress for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” A story of hope amid squalor in Mumbai, India, “Slumdog Millionaire” came in with 10 nominations, its eight wins including adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing and both music Oscars (score and song).
Question: Have you seen “Slumdog Millionaire”? If so, do you think it was worthy of the Oscar for 2008 best motion picture?

Slumdog Millionaire deserved Best Picture of 2008 and every other award it received last night. Two friends and I went to see it at the AMC last night after the Oscars and I loved it just as much the second time around. Two other movies from 2008 come close to Slumdog’s greatness and they weren’t nominated for Best Picture: WALL-E and the Dark Knight (but that’s AMPAS for you…).

I’m waiting until it comes out on DVD, but I definitely want to see it. We rented Vickie Cristina Barcelona this weekend, but haven’t watched it yet. Planning on doing that tonight.

JeanC; you need to see “Slumdog” on the big screen. I believe MikeK was the one who provided the expression for the movie — Wow! Just wow! It has some rough patches that makes you wince. But the will to overcome all obstacles for the sake of love — and the bittersweet ending — ranks it ahead of the field. BTW, Jean; pleaz post your thoughts on Vickie Cristina Barcelona. I’m curious about that one.

I see that the wife-beater guy with the anger-management problem won best actor. I suspect the only other professions where a guy like that would win awards and be praised to no end would be a professional athlete or a rock singer.

Slumdog’s a great movie, and it deserves all the accolades it can get. I love the train scene, with MIA’s “Paper Planes” song as background.

Oh yes, A.R. Rahman’s score to Slumdog is brilliant (in fact I’m listening to it right now).
And as for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, also a very, very good movie. Woody Allen writes some of the best dialogue in Hollywood and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” has been called the “Manhattan” for Barcelona because of how well it captures the city - I haven’t been to Barcelona but now I want to! The characters are interesting and all the actors are fantastic - I’m happy for Penelope.
