Wild Card/Monday — 2/23/09

Don’t look now, but Joe Butler & the SR marketing department are tossing in some prizes to go with the Blogfest ‘09 awards being planned by JeanieSpokane, CindyH & Co. Saturday, from noon to 3 p.m. at MoonDollars/Post Falls. Writes Joe: ”Our marketing department can likely supply some odds and ends for blogfest prizes. Mostly little promo items for our niche sites (Down to Earth bags and coffee, various GoGolf items like tees or balls.)” In a dozen years or so, when the newspaper has gone the way of the dinosaur, these odds & ends will be valuable. Or not. We’ll be talking much more about Blogfest ‘09 this week. I hope you’re planning to be there. Meanwhile, let’s play the Wild Card and get on with the week …

Here’s a litte ditty I hope they’re playing on the $8 billion light rail between Disneyland and Las Vegas. My apologies to Louis Armstrong and Walt Disney.

When you wish upon Obama’s star
Makes all the difference who you are
    Anything your heart desires
Seven hundred eighty billion will come to you

If your heart is in your dreams
    No request is to extreme
Mortgages, trains, mice and automobiles are really keen
When you wish upon a star
    As dreamers do

    Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
As sweet fullfillment of their secret drowns
like a giant pile of cash called stimulus.
Fate steps in and see’s you through

When you wished upon a Obama’s star
    Your dreams came true

I was interviewed on public radio last week and my Dad heard it broacast in Tri Cities on his way to work. He called me up to say it gave him goose bumps to hear his son on the radio.

He told me he was proud of me… (that gave me goose bumps).

Hey I thought I was in the noon question thread. I think DFO got me caught in some sort of vortex when he moved the wild card up top…

Leave it to me to just pull up to the the proverbial curb and roll down my window to say DFO - yea that’s hip and all with the “girls” doing this award gig - but I can’t help but wonder - how folks like us blerkers will feel if we show up? I mean yea -I come on here and there but I feel when I do I have something to say as has been witnessed front page a few times. I guess what I’m trying to say is I hope we (the few and far between) don’t get hurt feelers and whatnot if we show up to the gig. Seems like you are making this the Oscars of who is who of HBO and the vibe should be - ya all come down now ya hear!

Also post directions please from both CDA and Spokane for those who don’t know and thank you.

    Just saying - Peace!

Having been in office only about 30 days, I am in awe of what Obama has been able to accomplish. In that short period of time, he has been able to break just about every campaign promise he made to get elected. Quite a feat. Bipartisanship, transparency, no pork and earmarks, no lobbyists. You know, CHANGE. His appointments have been horrendous and he still goes around the Country giving the same old campaign speech. I’ve been hearing he same one for a couple of weeks now, waiting for some actual particulars regarding his plan to deal with the economy. Not forthcoming. And, btw, how about Geithner? Wouldn’t this be a good time for the Sec of the Treas to make an appearance. Timmy hasn’t been seen only once since his famous blunder speech. That was at a G-7 meeting last weekend where he didn’t say a word regarding HIS plan. I knew this administration was going to be bad, but just not THIS bad.. Dow down another 250 today to new lows set a dozen years ago. This is what OJT gets ya’.

  • JBelle on February 23 at 5:02 p.m.

The NYT is reporting Gary Locke is the new choice for Commerce.

  • Bent on February 23 at 5:56 p.m.

Wow, that is big news Jbelle.

  • Cindy_H on February 23 at 6:10 p.m.

FMB: I’m looking foward to meeting you in person. Even if your avatar scares me silly.

  • toadman on February 23 at 6:31 p.m.

hmo - have you read the bailout package? Cuz it seems to me you’re on another planet entirely. Here, let me help:

    http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_bills&docid=f:h1enr.pdf

Lots of stuff in there. Money for the military, money for green technology, money for infrastructure, farms, extended unemployment benefits, money for state and local law enforcement, hell, there’s even money for the expansion of school lunches. I wonder if poor kids will mind being fed PORK, so long as they’re EATING SOMETHING!?!?

As I’ve said before, one man’s pork, is another man’s pork dinner.

Also, it seems to be that the strongest argument against this package was that NOBODY HAD READ THE ENTIRE THING, which as this point, is a bogus and idiotic claim. Because, really, it’s easy to read, and you can scan through the whole thing in a couple of hours. Trust me, I just finished doing just that.

As for your other claims, you’re listening to spin masters too much. Turn off the radio, turn off MSNBC and Faux. Shut out Hannity’s insanity, and O’Reilly’s over the top yelling. Stop taking Olberman and Maddow too seriously. The stupid media is manipulating you…melting your brain into a good little angry constituent. Anger is bad for this country. We’ve had too much of that sort of crap.

The only thing Obama’s doing wrong right now, in my own personal opinion, is being a little too negative about the economy, which is making it worse than it really is…

nite all… sweet dreams… remember, it’s all gonna be ok, trust me…

    ;-)

  • hmoffsuite on February 23 at 6:37 p.m.

toad >>> The stupid media is manipulating you…

Hardly the case, Toad. I read the hard news and draw my own conclusions.

  • idawa on February 23 at 6:44 p.m.

hmmm… this just in, I got an email from the SeattleTimes stating that Pres. Obama is about to announce his appointment of former WA Gov. Gary Locke to fill Sec. of Commerce role….

  • hmoffsuite on February 23 at 6:49 p.m.

idawa. That item has been out there about 4 hours.

  • idawa on February 23 at 6:49 p.m.

    sorry, I didn’t see the earlier comments…

  • Arch_Druid on February 23 at 11:03 p.m.

I am at work, Saturday, you guys enjoy your blogfest.

  • Kendramama on February 24 at 7:59 a.m.

Arch Druid, you didn’t make the last one, either? C’mon! Tell them you need a three hour lunch that day, you have a very important meeting to attend (but don’t mention the free pizza!).

I myself am totally looking forward to reconnecting with everyone, and meeting the newer blogstars on here… I’ve sorta dropped out of my blogger role into more of a blurker one- but that doesn’t mean I love this place any less, or all the cool people on it.

Last year I thought it was awesome to put faces and voices to what had before just been online personalities; the way people are in person are different, too, although not necessarily in a good/ bad way… just another facet of the “man behind the avatar” thing. Or woman, of course. Y’all know what I mean.

Hey, and speaking of “y’all”, is our Tennessean Pot Plan author gonna make it again this year? If not, who will be the furthest traveler to attend? Whoever they are, they should *definitely* get an award!

  • nic on February 24 at 8:05 a.m.

In that short period of time, he has been able to break just about every campaign promise he made to get elected. Quite a feat. Bipartisanship, transparency, no pork and earmarks, no lobbyists. You know, CHANGE.

Wow, really? I just lost a little respect for you, hmo. As much as you say you want Obama to succeed, it seems you are only looking for what he’s done wrong. It seems you’re looking so hard that you’re finding stuff that just isn’t true.

Granted, I’ll agree that he hasn’t made stellar choices for his cabinet, but beyond that - your arguments fail.

Bipartisanship - he has made several attempts to include the GOP minority, but the GOP would rather stand in opposition.

transparency - bent posted this link yesterday: http://stimuluswatch.org/ intended to provide full transparencey on how stimulus bucks are being spent

no pork and earmarks - c’mon… any legitimate project could be twisted and viewed as pork. Some will see green technology as a job creating investment, others will see it as pork. Just because you think it’s pork doen’t mean it is pork. And don’t use the Disney-Sin City train as an example of pork… that example has all ready been debunked.

no lobbyists - Obama’s first official act as president included attempts to limit lobbyist involvement.

    try again.

  • hmoffsuite on February 24 at 8:14 a.m.

nic >> “no lobbyists - Obama’s first official act as president included attempts to limit lobbyist involvement”

And then he violated his promise and did, in fact, put former lobbyists in place. Bipartisanship? Yes, include the GOP input only as long as it was consistent with his own policies and ideas. No compromise, pal. If you don’t see the pork and earmarks in the bill just passed, you are blind. Transparency? We didn’t even see the bill before it was passed. I stand by my initial comments. Obama has broken nearly every campaign promise he has made.

  • Bent on February 24 at 8:59 a.m.

Ok, Hmoff…I’ve tried to go easy on you with this stimulus thing, but now i’m just plain sick of it.

Why don’t you provide just one link to just one earmark in the stimulus bill… If you cannot do that, you need to just zip it already.

  • Bent on February 24 at 9:15 a.m.

“Bipartisanship? Yes, include the GOP input only as long as it was consistent with his own policies and ideas. No compromise, pal.” — Hmoff

Look I didn’t vote for Obama, and I probably still wouldn’t — but to try and say that he hasn’t acted in a bipartisan way is ludicrous. You are suffering from selective perception, sir. You only believe want you want to believe.

Not only has Obama appointed several republicans to his cabinet, he insisted that the GOP tax cuts (that he campaigned against) remain in the original stimulus package as an effort to reach out to the GOP. It was the speaker of the House who politicized the bill once she got her hands on it.

Hmoff, this guy has been in office for a month and you have been screeching ever since…It’s getting old. Do you have anything constructive to add to the blog? Or is it so miserable down in Arizona that you have to continue poluting every thread you enter with half-baked negative slams against the president. It just seems like a waste of energy to me…

  • hmoffsuite on February 24 at 9:18 a.m.

idawa. Regarding the pork matter, take a look at this item from the WSJ.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123310466514522309.html

  • hmoffsuite on February 24 at 9:26 a.m.

Sorry. the last comment was meant for Bent. I accepted the election of Obama with an open mind. My only problem has been that he has failed in so many ways so far that I am losing my confidence in him.

  • Bent on February 24 at 9:27 a.m.

Try again Hmoff, that article is dated January 28th, when the bill was still upto $825 billion. It was cut dramatically between the time this article ran and Feb. 17th when it was signed into law. Find something pointing out earmarks in that bill after Feb. 17th…

Why don’t you look at the bill and pull something directly out of it because the way you make it sound, the bill just laden with earmarks…shouldn’t be too hard to find one then should it?

  • Bent on February 24 at 9:35 a.m.

Hmoff, if you were on top of things in DC, you would realize that the stimulus bill has passed and now it’s on to resolving the FY 2009 budget, which is loaded with earmarks. personally, I think earmarks are a good way to fund projects, but some reforms are needed to prevent the corruption we have seen on both sides of the isle in recent years…

Her’s a link, if you start now you may be able to catch Obama breaking a promise BEFORE it passes:
    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0209/19189.html

  • toadman on February 24 at 9:40 a.m.

“Why don’t you look at the bill and pull something directly out of it because the way you make it sound, the bill just laden with earmarks…”

Hey bent, I provided a link to the pdf file of the entire final bill, above, didn’t I? I’m still looking for something I don’t agree with in the bill.

    ;-)

  • Bent on February 24 at 9:47 a.m.

Yeah, Toad, it’s not that hard to read, is it? I’m just getting sick of the misinformation on the stimulus…

    It really is getting stale…

All the experts have been scowering that bill to find a smoking gun and so far they’ve come up with nothing, but Hmoff has the real scoop… he just can’t get any traction in the Mainstream Media…

  • hmoffsuite on February 24 at 9:54 a.m.

Maybe we should agree that one man’s pork is another man’s bacon. My thinking was that the stimulus bill was intended to “jump start” the economy. That is what Obama said. In reading the bill, I simply see many items of expenditure that will not serve that purpose. I spose I was wrong in thinking that the stimulus would actually be crafted to stimulate the economy, which is what is required right now.

  • toadman on February 24 at 10:04 a.m.

hmo.. I know what Obama said too.. and to be honest, I don’t agree with him that the bill will “jump start” the economy, or even “fix” the economy. The only thing that can do that is consumer confidence.

What this bill WILL do, however, is keep people employed, reduce our dependence on foreign energy products, employ people to shore up our infrastructure, and soften our landing when the economy finally hits bottom some time later this year. I’m with digger (I think it was Digger, or someone) who said that he predicted the DOW would bottom out around 6500. I’m not so optimistic. I’m putting my money on seeing the bottom when the DOW hits 6000, and unemployment hits 11%.

What I’m hoping for from the president in tonight’s speech, is a little less gloom and doom, and a little more “here’s what we’re doing, here’s what we’ve done, here’s what’s ahead, and we are smart enough, and strong enough, to do this. So, let’s get to work and stop being so sad.”

  • Bent on February 24 at 10:05 a.m.

You are entitled to your opinion, Hmoff.

But based on what I have researched on this subject, the adminstration — and Congress for that matter — are listening to the experts and acting accordingly. I don’t like all of what I see in the bill, but I am willing to give it a chance before I start wailing…

  • Bent on February 24 at 10:07 a.m.

    Me too, Toad…

BTW, that was Jimmymac, who made the Dow prediction…

  • hmoffsuite on February 24 at 10:16 a.m.

toad >>> “What I’m hoping for from the president in tonight’s speech, is a little less gloom and doom, and a little more “here’s what we’re doing, here’s what we’ve done, here’s what’s ahead”

We agree!! I don’t want the first words out of his mouth to be “we are in the worst economy since the great depression”. That has been his lead line in his last several speeches. We all know that. I would like some specifics. Obama has been short on providing those. His speeches have all sounded like a campaign speech which all were short on specifics. HOW is he going to righten the economy? Btw, this would be a good time for Geithner to make a showing. It is all the uncertainty that is causing the market grief.
