A rider looks to throw his beads during the Krewe of Bacchus parade in New Orleans. Today, of course, New Orleans celebrates Fat Tuesday, the last day before the Catholic Lenten season begins with Ash Wednesday, by indulging in its annual Mardi Gras festivities. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon) Question: Do you give some indulgence up in observation of Lent?

There are ice cream bars in the vending machine that will go stale for the next 7 weeks.

Cabbage; I may have shared this before. But I gave up church for Lent when I was 16. It led to 6 wasteful years. A rediscovery of my faith, albeit in a different form. And 37 years of a faith pilgrimage. And counting. I still remember the ash that the priest would put on my forehead way back when. And not eating fish on fridays. And confession. Etc. I’m an anti-establishment Protestant. But I still respect my Roman Catholic beginnings.

I thought you could/should eat fish on Fridays during Lent. CB -you sound like a good Catholic - what’s the official rule on that?
JBelle on February 24 at 5:02 p.m.
Poolman! Fridays are a fish day!
JBelle on February 24 at 5:03 p.m.
uh, meaning, you don’t eat fish. on fish days.

hmmm…seriously asking for education, here.
I thought that most Roman Catholic congregations had a whole new set of rules after Vatican II. Is the no meat on Fridays think still required? Customary? Is there still a big difference between groups churches on the food matters? DFO, hope it’s ok to ask these things here.

:) Florine, there was a whole new set of rules after Vatican II. No meat on Friday is still required and customary. I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking in your next question but I will tell you that fish days, and meat days, are universal and world wide for the Holy Roman Church. Heck, we all read the same scriptures and say the same prayers worldwide every Sunday. And it’s OK to ask me anything.
JBelle on February 24 at 6:08 p.m.
florine, as a general rule, you can expect that Jews, Hindus and Muslims won’t eat pork. Seventh Day Adventists won’t eat pork nor shellfish. And Hindus won’t eat pork nor beef.

Which explains why we garden-variety Protestants eat pretty much anything that moves, whenever we feel like it.
Someone has to take up the slack and keep nature in balance :-)

Thanks for your clarification, JBelle.

Someone needs to educate the Vatican. Fish IS meat. I don’t observe any RC rules. I am not a Roman Catholic. Just like someone needs to educate the GOP on tax cuts, they are still spending and redistribution of wealth.

Arch, perhaps a little tolerance is in order. The pope won’t tell you what to eat and you don’t tell Catholics what to give up. :)
Fish was the food of the poor and the thought was to sacrifice something of indulgence, the food of the poor was not taken as an indulgence.
Vatican II did not re-write all the rules. But the meatless Fridays were dispensed for some other act of charity. But the meatless Fridays rule still holds during lent.

And DFO, there are some that still hope and pray for you to return to your roots. :)
