1. 1.2 billion ounces of silver
have been produced in the Wallace area since 1884, placing it near the
very top of “Most Silver Rich Places” in all of world history, along
with Liz Taylor’s jewelry hutch.
2. Julia Jean Mildred Frances Turner
was born in Wallace. She was known as “Judy” until she went to
Hollywood at age 16 and changed her name to Lana, becoming one of the
era’s most famous and glamorous movie stars. During her long career she
was known as “the Sweater Girl” and was nominated for an Best Actress
Academy award for “Peyton Place”. She had a recurring role in the
cheesy 80’s prime-time soap “Falcon Crest”.
3. Literally every building in downtown Wallace is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Certain residents worked tirelessly back in the 70’s for to make this
happen after discovering tentative plans for the new improved
Interstate 90 threatened to raze much of the historic area and run
right through the middle of town. This is why I-90 now runs “over” the
town instead/OrangeTV, Get Out! North Idaho. The rest of OTV’s “11 Cool Things About Wallace, Idaho here.
Question: Who is the most famous person to emerge from your hometown? Did you ever meet that person?

I think the only famous person here in this village was our vicar that ran off with his housekeeper leaving his wifey and 3 kids in the vicarage doing the dishes….. it was an hour after he gave a sermon in church about family values and trust LOL
yep, our dirty old man vicar is the most famous person that lived here LOL

Cher lived in Fresno during part of the time I lived there but went to a different high school. I've never met her but did see her get off a plane in Spokane. It was the same plane my mother was on. My mother tried desperately to open the door of that plane in flight and slugged the stewardess who stopped her. We knew she had Alzheimer's, but didn't expect her to do this. It never happened again because she was ban from the airline. I often wonder if Cher has ever flied commercial since then.

I lived next door to the band known as Quicksilver Messenger Service, though many may not remember them. I also went to high school with Robin Williams, though he was shy at that time.

Great article, OTV. I can add only that the brothels made it until June of '91 when the Feds raided them and 54 bars, most of which had gambling going on in some form. There was also another movie filmed in Wallace but it was so bad I won't mention it here. :)
Wheels, my great uncle George was also instrumental in the creation of the Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp, having founded Rainbow Mining, which became CDA Mines, after arriving in Wallace in 1896. Georges' brother, my grandpa C.J. Austin joined him there in 1903. One of George's better operations was Rainbow #3, which by coincidence is just up the road from our property on Evans Creek . He also staked out the first claim on the property where the Coeur Mine currently operates.

Hey John A small world.I think your great uncle George had a son by the name of Bob who was the father to two girls,Julie&Susan who I went to school with.My grandfather and uncle, for CDA Mines bought 51% of Rainbow around 1968.I'm not sure but I think Rainbow #2 was around Evans Creek while # 3 was in the Enaville area.A little unclear now as I operated a drill rig on that orig CDA property in 1965 which may have been Rainbow at the time after discharge from active duty in the Army.I established the site for the Coeur headframe with that rig. What a job.

Wheels, yes George's son Bob worked with him in the mining business until moving to Spokane to help establish the Red Lion hotel chain. Bob's sister Jane is still going strong at 96 and with Susan stays in contact with my folks in Hayden.
And, you're right about the Rainbow #3 being near Enaville up Bootjack Creek and the #2 was at Evans Creek. It is so amazing to live now on the same road George travelled every day over 90 years ago.

John A it's a wonderful legacy to have.Be proud. My uncle is 91 yrs young and formed another mining co.,Royal Apex Silver which has a drill operating up two mile(west of Osburn) at a depth of 11k feet, deepest in Valley history.Recently merged/Azteca Gold out of Canada to develop property.Initial results have been very good.I remember Bob starting the Red Lion chain which has turned into quite a business.Daughter Julie is currently at the Hayden Lake cabin.

Wheels, just catching up here.
I'm glad to hear your uncle is still around. His place in the industry is well established, as is your family's place with CDA Mines, although I know you've had issues with its current operations.
It would be fun if your family and the Austins could get together sometime and re-live the century-old relationships that connect us. Especially if that occurred while the old-timers, like your uncle, my 85-year old dad and his 96-year-old cousin Jane, are still around to tell their tales of early-day Wallace.
