Toad: We Networked @ Church Camp

In 1985, or thereabouts, we were powerful, we were unbreakable, we were indestructible, we were all boyish and proud and full of everything that boys are, at fifteen, or thereabouts. It was a church camp. Don’t let that fool you, however. It wasn’t a place for “church” per se. Oh sure, they made us do the church thing in the evenings, and sometimes in the mornings.. but the rest of the time, it was an adventure in socializing with our peers. Forming cliques, dissolving cliques, and reforming old alliances, all in one week. Finding true love on Monday, losing it on Tuesday, running the panties up the flag pole on Wednesday, reconciling on Thursday, and saying goodbye and promising to write/call, but never follow through on that promise, on Friday/Toadman, Synaptic Disunion. More here.

Question: Did you ever go to church camp or summer camp? What did you enjoy about it?

Camp Lutherhaven for a week every summer from age 8 through Jr High School. It was a great week spent, swimming, singing around the campfire at night, spending a few bucks at the Canteen, making kitchy crafts to bring home to Mom, in a beautiful setting. Our daughters went to camp there too when they were in grade school. Good memories.

I went to church camp when I was nine. I hated it. I was sure my parents would move and not tell me. They made me do arts and crafts at camp. I hate arts and crafts.
I tried again at 15. It was worse. I got stuck with the geekiest guy in camp as a date for the banquet on the last night. I couldn’t find a way to say “no” without being mean. I couldn’t bear the thought of being his date so I invented a headache and called my dad. He came and got me.
    My dad was the best!

Contest is still on.. which of the five 1980s teenagers in the picture above, is yours truly, eh?

  • DFO on March 03 at 4:08 p.m.

Toad; you’re either the one on the far right or the one on the far left. For some reason, I’m tempted to go with the one on the far left. But I won’t. You’re the guy on the far right. Right?

  • toadman on March 03 at 4:12 p.m.

heh.. you know me Dave.. I’m not far left, OR far right. But I’m more left than I am right, that’s for sure…

  • Nick_Adams on March 03 at 4:17 p.m.

The guy in the white hat.

  • nic on March 03 at 4:22 p.m.

Dang.. I was thinking the same thing as dave… either the preacher’s kid looking boy in black (he has your smile) or the boy in the red hollaback girl shorts on the right. I guess I lost.

Or is it the nerdcore guy in the blue & red polo? (not my first guess… I figured he was too tall)

  • toadman on March 03 at 4:30 p.m.

    nic…

Nice attempt at baiting me into outting myself…

    ;-)

Since you picked three possible choices out of the five guys in the picture in your answer, I’ll wait until later to reveal if you were right about of any of your choices…I wouldn’t want to narrow down the options so soon.

  • nic on March 03 at 4:38 p.m.

I really only had one guess… The first two were Dave’s and I thought they were wrong.

  • toadman on March 03 at 4:40 p.m.

    CB - nope.

By now, by process of elimination, you all should have guessed…

Hurry.. I have to go home soon for cryin out loud!

  • toadman on March 03 at 4:46 p.m.

    Here’s a hint:
Rabbit Ears. Peace. The number 2.

    Nite all…

  • Sisyphus on March 03 at 4:53 p.m.

My first pick was the handsome guy hiding his genitalia.

  • Cindy_H on March 03 at 5:22 p.m.

    Never would have guessed, Toad.
But Nic’s description of the preacher’s kid looking boy brought back very fond memories of my first kiss.
    Very. Fond.

Camp Allen in Navastoa, TX was always my home away from home.

  • Bent on March 03 at 6:43 p.m.

Toad, I pegged it earlier, but I just didn’t get a chance to post before you let on…

The only camp I ever attended was Trail Creek School at Magee Ranger Station when I was in the sixth grade. I liked it so much I became a camp conselor twice at Trail Creek in my senior year…

I also think toadie is the one next to the girlie shorts with his arms crossed infront of his nuggets.

  • toadman on March 04 at 10:25 a.m.

Marmie’s right. Don’t know why I was standing that way…also, marmie, you’re correct about Scott as well. That’s him in the fedora.

  • marmitetoasty on March 04 at 10:29 a.m.

*Pinning on me chuftie badge as I sit here*……. bloody hell I was right….. I never forget a face :)

  • Cabbage Boy on March 04 at 10:36 a.m.

You were standing like that because you weren’t wearing your hot girlie shorts like the other guy.
