Item: Moscow won’t alter discrimination policy: Majority of council says city already gives adequate protection to the transgendered/David Johnson, Lewiston Tribune
More Info: City councilors here shot down a resolution Monday night to amend the city’s nondiscrimination employment policy to specifically prohibit discrimination based on gender expression, identity or characteristics. By a 5-1 vote, the majority of councilors agreed the city’s current policy already protects people from such discrimination.
Question: Did the Moscow City Council make the right decision by not specifically including transgender people in the city’s nondiscrimination policy?

It’s too bad that transgender discrimination is so bad in Moscow. I guess when things get that bad, the government needs to step in and do something. I hope transgenders everywhere are aware of potential problems in Moscow, yet comforted by this policy.

I have always thought that equal rights were vital. There are, however, periodic attempts to give to certain classes of people, “extra rights.” Nobody should have more or less than anyone else. I am still troubled by a fist fight between a white person and a minority, can rise to the level of a felony purely on the basis of race. that example sets aside equal rights and grants extraordinary right to the victim, totally unjustified. There are already laws against assault.

Just because some laws already exist or apply doesn’t mean they are being adhered to or enforced. Laws that seem redundant or “extraordinary” exist for a reason - and usually the reason is substantiated. Those who complain about such laws should fully comprehend those reasons before claiming such actions are “unjustified.”
