The good news is that the Dow is up around 250 pts today. First time in several days of trading. The bad news is that it is likely not a result of any of Obama’s policies. China reported a GDP higher than most had thought and the hope is their economy will continue to influence other world economies. Its a good sign for a global recession.

Is it alright that I’m already calling this the Not-So-Great Depression and I’m currently making a speak-easy in the basement of my parent’s house?

Funny when the market goes down its the newly minted president’s fault. But when it goes up, well its just market forces.
Me on March 04 at 12:44 p.m.
Sis - that IS funny. Wasn’t it you or ThomG that said not too long back that we should quit looking at the market all together? That it isn’t really a good tell anymore? (I believe that was when it was down right after the “stimulus package” was passed and the righties were screaming it was our President’s fault).
So my question is this. IS the market telling us anything really about our economy adjustments or NOT? And if so then whose fault is it? Is it only this persons fault when it goes up, but someone elses when it goes down?
I am not completely being facetious - I really want to understand.

Safe, legal and rare. Yeah sure.
Me on March 04 at 3:16 p.m.
Yeah Cabbage and at 23 weeks. (Apparently it is legal at 24 weeks in Florida?) 6 months? That IS a baby I don’t care who says it is not.

Who do you think donates more to charity? The wealthy guy, maybe with foundations, or the low income guy living paycheck to paycheck. So, now Obama wants to eliminate donations to charities from the wealthier people. Real Smart, huh? Kill the charities that take care of your ‘underprivliged’ that you are always talking about, Mr. Obama? This is a really bad idea, jmho, of course.
hmoffsuite on March 04 at 4:34 p.m.
One good thing that Obama is doing, imo, is the letting of Government contracts thru a competitive bidding process. You know, the $100,000 toilet type thing.
Kage_Mann on March 04 at 4:40 p.m.
I passed a sign near Riverstone yesterday that was advertising
condos/townhouses for around $ 789,000 at Mill River. It’s a little out of my budget range, but I’d be willing to go halves on one. ;-)

Actually me, I did say that the daily rise and fall of the market was not a reflection of whether newly enacted policies were being effective yet, but are more a reaction to new disclosures about how deep the recession is, whether jobless reports, revenue shortfalls or adjustments and the like. Wouldn’t you agree?
hmoffsuite on March 04 at 5:09 p.m.
Sis >> ” but are more a reaction to new disclosures about how deep the recession is, whether jobless reports, revenue shortfalls or adjustments and the like. Wouldn’t you agree?”
Although you directed the question to ‘Me’, I’d like to repond, if I might. We pretty much know how deep the recession will be, revenue shortfalls, etc. The Problem the maket is having is that it feels Obamas’ policies will only make it worse and will not prove to solve the problem we are facing. It is the ‘expectation’. or lack thereof. that is causing the market to go down. With Obamas’ policies, we don’t see the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’. The markets are very forward looking.

Can’t you read the signs … there is already a recession. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, we’ve been in a recession since December 2007.
cantyoureadthesigns on March 04 at 7:04 p.m.
Sam, yes, I know we’re already in a recession, I was qualifying it (severe), as in it getting far worse than it already is, with a hint being the revised 4th quarter 2008 stats, almost twice as much contraction in the economy as originally estimated.

Obama pick for HHS faces questions about state aid
By JOHN HANNA
Associated Press Writer
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, President Barack Obama’s
choice to head the Health and Human Services Department, is facing questions
about increased state payments to a social services group whose board includes
the chairman of the state Democratic Party.
Last fall, Sebelius’ secretary of social and rehabilitation services, Don
Jordan, approved an increased rate for Community Living Opportunities, a
nonprofit group that provides services to the developmentally disabled, that
amounted to $713,000.
The group’s board of directors included Larry Gates, a Sebelius friend who has
served as state Democratic chairman for six years; Dan Biles, a Gates law
partner recently appointed by Sebelius to the Kansas Supreme Court, and Lew
Perkins, athletic director at the University of Kansas. Biles left the board at
the end of 2008.
Jordan said his decision was based on the severe disabilities of some of the
group’s clients and that warranted larger payments. Jordan has asked the Kansas
Health Policy Authority to hire an outside expert to review his decision.
Sebelius said there was nothing improper about Jordan’s decision for the group
located in the Kansas City suburb of Lenexa.
On Wednesday, Kansas legislators said they planned hearings examining the
decision and raised the possibility of seeking a legislative audit.

I am going to make a comment on something a little closer to home than the back and forth dialog about Obama and his stimulus package.
I am referring to a Press front page article today about “watchdogs” questioning Charlie Nipp’s service with the LCDC. Hagadone still has his main attack dog, Mary Souza, going after Charlie and the LCDC. It is absolutely shameful the way they’re trying to discredit Charlie. Hagadone wants to do all of the developing and wants nothing in his way, like the LCDC. I could say more but I better not.

fotoman, can you prove this? Is there a conspiracy between them to do in Charlie and LCDC? Your just spinning the regular yarn that makes it’s way on this blogsite. F-shame man!
Hagadone is his own man and he only walks to the beat of his own drummer.

Kage Mann, how long have you lived in Cd’A?
Me on March 04 at 9:21 p.m.
Thank you Sis - I do think I would agree. While I HATE hearing constantly that the dow is down, I do remember when it was contantly up and wondering when it would pop. What I’d like to stop is the blame and pointing. See it’s up that’s because of us, see its down that’s because of them. I do think the dow reacts like a hair trigger and isn’t looking far enough ahead.
Me on March 04 at 9:24 p.m.
Funny - I posted this in response to Sis and didn’t read down. Hmoff thinks the market is forward looking and I think they are on a hair trigger.
I think they react at EVERYTHING and actually CAUSE things to happen to which they react again.
JIMMYMAC on March 04 at 9:28 p.m.
Kage,
As one that typically defends Mr. H on this blog and others, is it not evident that his paper has it out for LCDC? I don’t think it has anything to do with developer vs developer per se, but is is undeniable that Duane does have an axe to grind with some folks that are typically in the pro LCCD camp. It’s simply political chess.

Kage Mann, how long have you lived in Cd’A?
I was born here Sam.
Jimmymac, I’m not defending Mr.H, in fact I’m critical of him. But, for anyone one to suggest that there is a conspiracy between Mr.H and Mary to try and take down Charlie and LCDC is pure fiction, bred on here by some HBO’ers.
Sam on March 04 at 9:41 p.m.
Oh okay, Kage. Just curious, because it didn’t seem like you understand how Hagadone or the Cd’A Press works in terms of the columnists and their motives.
Kage_Mann on March 04 at 9:50 p.m.
Have you worked for the CDA Press? I know there is no love lost between hagadone and LCDC,esp.since they didn’t go for his reroute of Sherman proposal, which he wanted for his proposed Hagadone Gardens over at McKuen.
Sam on March 04 at 10:01 p.m.
KageMann, no, the Cd’A Press is not on my resume.
There is a lot more to the LCDC issue than just the gardens. It involves personalities and city politics about various issues with Hagadone projects, not just LCDC stuff. He’s vindictive and that’s always been very clear. I wonder if anyone has ever actually asked him that. I’d wager he’d admit it.
Kage_Mann on March 04 at 10:11 p.m.
Sam, after seeing the hostile takeover of Templins North Shore and other business interests in 1984, by him and Jerry Jaeger.
It wouldn’t surprise me if he is real vindictive person,b/c he’s already proven he wants things his way and only his way.I’m not a fan of Mr.H.
Yea, Mr.H is mad at the city for not accepting his proposal for his condos etc. on Blackwell island.
DFO on March 04 at 10:20 p.m.
Kage; Duane & Jerry ripped the old North Shore and the old Western Frontier hospitality business away from Bob Templin in the hostile takeover in 1983, a year before I arrived in Coeur d’Alene. Jerry’s father was Templin’s partner. Jerry took his place when his father was killed in a plane accident. The old TJ’s Pantry in Post Falls stood for (T)emplin & (J)aeger. Templin still turns pretty sullen when you mention either Hagadone or Jaeger around him.
