Gonzaga 83, St. Mary’s 58

Josh Heytvelt of Gonzaga ( left in white ) stretches out to deny #20 Diamon Simpson of St. Mary’s a shot at the basket in first half action Monday at the WCC Championship game in the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.  Gonzaga won 83 to 58. Game story & boxscore here and here. (Christopher Anderson/Spokesman-Review)

GU is playing the best ball they have played all season. Unselfish play night in night out. Shutting down quality big men and defending the 3 ball. They really do have more ways to score than any other team in the nation right now. I think we owe Memphis a big thank you for putting the boots to us in the arena last month and exposing some gaps in our game that we have filled in quite nicely. Here’s hoping the Zags continue to peak well into the tourney.

I agree, Jimmy. I watched the massacre at the Arena in person against Memphis and I never expected this type of recovery.

Some will say they’re playing well now against a bunch of ‘The Sisters of the Poor’ and to some extent that’s correct, but their mastery of all phases of the game was on display this weekend.

The key has been two guys trying to impress the NBA: Pargo and Heytvelt. The former disappeared after the UConn loss and the latter only began to show his potential lately, knowing his only future in the game would require a greater effort.

They have so much talent, truly ten guys that could start for any team in the nation, that it is a struggle for Coach Few to share the playing time. My hat’s off to him for making it work. In my opinion, he gets better every game as a coach, and mentor, to this team. Plus, any squad that has Matt ‘Pistol Pete’ Bouldin is going to be a great one.

On that last point, Few’s best move was to put the ball in Matt’s hands more, since the Memphis loss. That has freed up Pargo to attack the rim and either score or pass off for the spot up three.

Look for Bouldin to light it up next year. Meantime, this could be a great run in the NCAAs for this team.

    Completely AGREE, JohnA.

One thing I will add that Mark has done and turned out to be a genuis for doing, even though I have been begging for months ;) , is STARTING Downs. Downs was a good guy to come off of the bench and drain a 3 to stop any momentum given up early but he is a critical piece to Matt’s razzle and dazzle, imho. He plays as hard as any of the Zags and like Matt, is a threat all over the court. I would like to see Gray become more of a threat like Micah at the hoop and I think he will in time.

Last note, I am praying that Matt will take charge this next year and reign in Daye’s gestures on the court. I’ve been hoping all year that Josh, Jeremy and Micah would dissolve his antics. Daye has all the talent in the world but needs Matt’s composure. I was yelling at the screen at Daye the last two games, “Austin-cut it out-you have Pat Reilley courtside for cryin out loud!!!”

All in all, this TEAM is doing something that I haven’t seen in our beloved Zags in the past, fundamentally peaking in March. Cheers to that.
