Perhaps having religion forced down our throats for the last eight years wasn’t such a good thing for the brand. Here’s hoping that religions begin using the carrot approach and stop trying to legislate themselves into our lives.
Blue - I don’t think it has much to do with the last administration, this is just an extension of the demographic changes we saw with the last census (2000 - before GWB). From the last census, if you count the atheists and non-Christian religion make up nearly 25% of the population and non-Christian groups are increasing at a faster pace (given population trends, almost all demographic groups, including Christians are increasing…). I think it does explain a lot of the “culture war” crap you hear on Fox news though, as the old oligarch of White Christian males subconsciously realize the demographic shift and are concerned about the implications on their power base. I think people like O’Rielly/Limbaugh are casting about trying to stop it, but I don’t think they can, the shift has momentum.
I think we need more cults to balance out traditional Christian groups like Catholics or Protestants. These groups should teach non-traditional theory on “holy” books, tell people what they should or should not consume, have funny wardrobe rules, create a hierarchy based on gender and financial standing, allow senior male members a great deal of latitude regarding women and children, and have a strong disregard for people who don’t share their same beliefs. Oh wait a second we already have this, the Church of Latter day Saints, and it’s extremely popular in the state of Idaho. I guess I would be remiss not at lease give Muslims a little shout out in this discussion. Not so popular in Idaho – but doing very well globally.
Actually I was a little curious to see how churches would be affected by the economic situation. Are people going out and praying for the economy to rebound and then dumping their children’s bread and milk money into the tidings basket? Sorry boy, you’ll have to go hungry tonight, but rest assured, we’re riding shotgun on our way to heaven, preacher said so…
idawa - I was referring to the infusion of religion into our lives allowed by the previous administration. It was a bad idea and made religion as palatable as Walmart on a Sunday. A church should be a place to seek refuge to, not refuge from.
This comes as a shock! With spokespeople like Bryan Fischer and Pat Robertson people should be flocking to churches to partake in Christ’s unwavering love.
I thought Digger’s response was good too. Real good. Lou Dobbs was on just now to discuss this, and of course had Tony Perkins on to discuss this woe is me episode on his talk show. No, I am not surprised that Americans are starting to lose their religion.
1 reason, big gvt religious activism vs freedom of religion found in the Bill of Rights.
Not necessarily are they opposed to God telling them what to do, but rather they don’t want gvt by way of religious activism telling them what to do. And in any case, the bible warned against religion becoming a big turn off.

Not surprised at all…unless you count my surprise that it seems to be so long in coming.

You win, Digger. I laughed aloud at your comment, because that’s exactly the way I feel about it.
