In the news this evening: Dr. Phil says Octo-Mom will get free nurses for her babies here. A study shows that Hospice patients feel abandoned by doctors here. The gunman accused of killing an Illinois pastor marked Sunday down as ‘Death Day’ here. A-Roid has undergone surgery on his hip here. Research indicates that warm weather may trigger migraines here. And the Wild Card remains in play …

President Obama signed an executive order this morning opening the door for stem cell research. That is HUGE information for me personally. I have Polycystic Kidney Disease, one of the most heriditary diseases even surpassing diabetes, and one of the least known about. It strikes 75% of siblings. My sister and brother both have had transplants. At my last doctor’s visit, besides the ominous thyroid biopsy that I faced (which was benign), my kidneys have deteriorated exponentially to about 12% function, making me eligible to be on a transplant list - and once on the list, usually six years or longer goes by before you make it to the top of the list. Will I make it? It will be a real stretch. Stem cell research is the only answer in the study of this particular disease.
hmoffsuite on March 09 at 11:06 a.m.
This move by Obama had been widely anticipated. I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago on the blog. The stem cell research companies are benefiting widely from this and the one I selected happens to be up about 50% today. In any event, I applaud this decision by Obama. (for reasons other than the stock price)

Great news on your biopsy Jeanie. Thanks for sharing about it. And also great news from Obama on yet another overdue and popular policy shift by our federal government. I am so relieved about having science back in the driver’s seat. It restores some lost confidence.

Finally, something hmoffsuite and I can agree on! Let’s go have a beer, dude!!

This is for the wild card. It is snowing to beat the band here in Spokane. I was so excited for the time change because it means Spring to me. Well, Spring Has Sprung a Leak http://jeaniespokane.blogspot.com/2009/03/spring-has-sprung.html.

Jeanie our entire office has banned the “S-word.” We have decided to call it “solid rain” because, we decided, the S-word has no place in Daylight Savings Time…
JeanieSpokane on March 09 at 2:02 p.m.
Bent, that is an excellent idea. I am wiping it from my brain as I write this. How dare it try to darken my day on today of all days, the first working day of Daylight Savings Time.

I have a question for my techie friends. I’ve recently become aware of netbooks which look like an excellent option for what I do. Essentially I’d like it to do word processing with Word, keep my Outlook calendar, blog and perhaps keep music and photos. Secondarily I’d like it to play DVDs if possible. Anybody have suggestions?

More bad news:
“McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) Newspapers, the third- largest newspaper chain in U.S., has announced that it will go deep and dramatic with its cuts: 1,600 jobs, which means about 15 percent of the total full-time workforce, and it will also cut wages for the rest of the employees, as part of the previously announced restructuring.”

Hooray for Obama.
First these great “Christians” generate sperm and eggs into petri dishes, let these cells unite into a proto-being, then freeze them, then have one or two (of dozens and dozens created) plopped into the woman at great cost.
Meanwhile the rejected, neglected frozen “bodies” are left in their stainless steel vaults, awaiting….???? Another try in some future year? Thawing and flushing down the drain? Eventual discarding when the rent runs out and the owners have lost interest as they tend to their children?
I will believe the opponents of stem cell research are true, honest, caring Christians (and not hypocrites) when they:
a. Refuse the use of invitro fertilization or any means other than natural procreation.
b. Support legislation that prohibits this procedure.
c. Support legislation to prohibit freezing of human embryos.
d. Provide funding and a structure to implant all remaining frozen embryos in an attempt to finish this biological process that they insist is human.
At this point I will believe they are honest and sincere.
Until that time lets use these unwanted, soon-to-be-discarded cells for some possible good that will help existing, real humans.

Dr. Doom is at it again. Don’t know if any of you are involved in stocks, but if a guy thinks the market is going down, you can still make money. When I figured the market was headed South, big time, I found an ETF that is a Ultra-short on the S&P index. The lower the market goes, the higher it goes. It trades like a stock under the symbol ‘SDS’. Just thought I’d pass the idea along. Anyway, Dr. Doom speaks ……

Last Demo,
let me assure you, I emphatically agree with supposition A. B and C are legislative and I am not sure what the likelihood of getting those past would be. I am not involved in D, but know of people that are. It is rather a fledgling area of the pro-life movement. As it develops, I will happily provide funding for the implantation of these human embryos.

Stocks going down, Hmoffsuite? Makes my 15 dollar investment look like it could by more. As it is, U.S. Bank draws 25 out of a dedicated account each month for retirement $$$, that will buy more too. I am not cashing out until I am ready to retire.
hmoffsuite on March 09 at 7:23 p.m.
Arch >>> “Stocks going down, Hmoffsuite?”
Sure enough. Down down about 80 and the Nas down about 25. Geithner still deficient in dealing with the crisis. Over time, Arch, you should be just fine.

Sign at a used auto dealership:
“Cash talks, BS walks”.
In other words, “Cash is king.”
Go ahead and buy into the market right now, but unless you are extremely smart/lucky in your picks, you’ll lose money for at least the next 18 months, likely 3 years.
We’re NOWHERE near the bottom, which for the Dow, will probably be 3000.
And yes, you can make money by short selling, as HMO mentioned, but again, that’s not an easy play, necessarily.
JIMMYMAC on March 10 at 12:25 a.m.
CYRTS,
3000? I hope you are incorrect but I will buy you a beer if you are right. It will have to be a Hammes or Schmidts, but a beer I will buy you. Hell, I might have to barter for it if your right.

Jimmymac thanks for the offer. I’ll take a Lucky Lager, or PBR, or similarly value priced.
The World Bank, FWIW, said today the entire globe is in recession, the first time since WWII.
