Update: Frito Ray And ‘The Talk’

Frito Ray survived “the talk” with flying colors. Remember? Last week, I mentioned here that Frito Ray had been drafted by Dalton Elementary officials to give the annual sex talk to the fifth-grade boys at the school. A year ago, he told teachers how impressed he was with the film-and-talk presentation that his son William attended. So he was asked to do the honors this year. Frito Ray told Huckleberries that nothing was off limits. At first, he said, the boys “giggled like girls.” But they quickly tuned in. During the Q-and-A, one fifth-grader seemed to distressed that there wasn’t an alternative method for reproduction. I doubt he’ll consider that a problem down the line. Afterward, Frito Ray said, several other fathers in attendance told him that they couldn’t have done what he did. And that his presentation was a far better method to learn about the birds & bees than the way they did as kids.

I’m still not sure what birds and bees have to do with anything, and I’ve had four kids.
Kudos to Frito Ray. You just tell him to ignore those whispers about those who can’t– teach.
    Heh.

I don’t have kids in the school system. Can anyone tell me what kind of “talk” is being provided for the girls?

I wonder if they show 5th grade girls that awful film: “You’re a Young Lady, Now.”
    Oh, that was bad.
I think I saved the little booklet, though.

I don’t know how much the talk has changed for girls. I did go to school in Idaho and we had the “talk” in fifth grade. I remember watching some kind of film and a nurse talking to us. I distinctly remember her going over menstruation. Not sure about the rest..

Mebbe they should make a film for uh…more mature ladies:
    “You’re an Old Lady Now.”
It could be about hot flashes and other mysterious things my older friends whisper about. Things that make them shake their heads at me and say, “Just you wait.”
That’s what my mom said about sex.
    It was worth the wait.
    I hope menopause is, too.

I have met Frito, and am sure he did his best, as he has children of his own and must deal with these sorts of issues every day. As do all parents of young children and teens. Back when I raised my kids, I left it all to my wife, typical man I know. They turned out very well though, she must have done a good job.
