Aliasjax: Anybody who monitors local blogs and other public cyber-forums knows that a very ugly racisits sentiment bubbles just below the surface in North Idaho. Read the recent comments on several threads at the CdA Press story comments section - criticism of NIC offering minority athletes scholarships, criticism of a local school bringing an African dance troupe to the school for a performance; calls for “white heritage” month; and on and on. It’s sickening. More here.
Question: Should the Coeur d’Alene Press do a better job of monitoring comments on its online story posts? Or do uncensored free-flowing comments provide a good gauge re: community sentiment?

They should do a lot of things better.

Hey Dave and Ajax, you don’t mean Jana do you? That would shock me. You might wanna check the title of the post cause it might promote some unwanted attention on her and Jim.

Sisyphus; thanks for bringing that to my attention. For years, I’ve called the Coeur d’Alene Press “Brand X” — as in the old television commercials in which a preferred product was compared to “Brand X.” Now, however, with JanTri’s Brand X Ranch blog in play in North Idaho, I’ll have to give up that habit to avoid confusion. I made the change out front.

Thanks!!! DISCLAIMER: The Brand X Ranch has absolutely No connection with the afformentioned “Brand X”. In fact, we have also been troubled by the local press that tends to minimize or sometimes throw gas on the fires of prejudice in North Idaho.
As a mixed race family, our children of color were victims of the worst of the worst back in the 80’s, when the Aryan Nations were running rampant. Two of my kids were chased by a car with name-calling skinheads screaming ot the windows. My teenaged son was threatened by ol’ Keith Gilbert, and was afraid for his life. We had shutters on the windows to protect us from rocks that were thrown, and tore down those offensive posters ( a cartoon black man in a target) that would show up at night on the trees in the neighborhood. The Post Falls Police were great, the community was by and large supportive, but we were very aware that there was, and still remains, a tension…. a remnant of the North Idaho Good Old Boy Club. I am still very aware of discriminatory attitudes and am protective of my family.
This community has come a long way, perhaps a certain unnamed publication just hasn’t kept up!

Well, it seems the comments accurately reflect public sentiment, and serve as a warning to those who might want to move here.
I say, leave them as is. Monitoring comments usually always fails anyway.

The “Mess” giving these racist morons a soap box to spew their ignorant, hate filled rants shows how desperate they are to generate revenue and stay afloat. I’m really curious to know who at the “Mess” is so shallow to not see the harm that allowing this to continue does to the area, and Idaho in general in the name of profits.

Who is buying all the expensive condos being built by the Hagadone corporation and paying moorage at the Hagadone marinas? Whites? Could there be $$ in promoting such crap as what is being presented on the blogs?

It’s not just North Idaho. Check out the comments on the Idaho Statesman’s website any time a hispanic is either arrested or there’s a story about immigration policy. Very. Very. Ugly.
Unless there is a heavy hand editing/checking comments, they can spin wildly out of control. Is it representative of the community mood? No. Just like online polls are nothing but an indicator of how people who are online feel—not indicative of broad consensus on any particular matter.
Unfortunately, I believe that comments can encourage others to go even further in stating opinions or beliefs they wouldn’t profess in a social setting. In Idaho, lately, it’s brought some of our more ugly thoughts to the public eye.

The CDA Press blogs and comments online also find their way into the Readers Write section of the Press’ print edition. One dude, a fellow by the name of Robbins was so filthy in what he had to say, yet he was fully able to get published. I mentioned his letter plus others over at A Matter of Opinion. Yeah, I’d say that the Press is so busy catering to these people that Mikey has absolutely no idea what harm he is doing to the credibility of his publication. In the interests of freedom of the press, Mikey can of course publish what he wants. But he publishes more hate than he does reasoned opinions.
