David Duke Material Left In Post Falls

Item: Literature deliveries shock senior center: ‘David Duke Report’ left at Post Falls facility on multiple occasions/Brian Walker, CDA Press

More Info: It isn’t exactly the type of material you’d expect to read with a cup of coffee at the local senior center. Someone has dropped off copies of “The David Duke Report” newsletters after hours at the Post Falls Senior Center four different times recently. Duke is a former grand wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux.

Question: Is this an isolated incident. Or is it proof that racism still remains a problem in North Idaho?

I actually thought that David Duke had died sometime back, probably just wishful thinking on my part, but I do think there is still a problem with racism in North Idaho. My wife is Jewish and she has recieved multiple nasty comments from people when they find out and I have had several people make racist comments to me regarding her background. Kind of sad, but I just try to chalk it up to the fact that there are a**holes no matter where you go

Anybody who monitors local blogs and other public cyber-forums knows that a very ugly racisits sentiment bubbles just below the surface in North Idaho.

Read the recent comments on several threads at the CdA Press story comments section - criticism of NIC offering minority athletes scholarships, criticism of a local school bringing an African dance troupe to the school for a performance; calls for “white heritage” month; and on and on. It’s sickening.

However, I’m glad those commenters are still speaking their minds (limited as they are) because it keeps us from believing that racism is over. If we merely silenced these lower-order thinkers, they, and their ideas, would merely go underground, hidden but still negatively affecting our community. Their outspokenness, despite its distastefulness, helps us all to remain vigilant.

You have to ask? North Idaho is by far the most racist part of the country I’ve ever visited. It makes me sad, and disgusted.

Interesting that they targeted the senior center. Perhaps they recognize how bigotry is a learned practice which is being successfully contested with education. Their efforts to countermand this practice should be confronted head on with a visit from Human Rights activists. Cause while North Idaho still has the problem, they have a very successful organization to help combat it. We southern Idaho bloggers would be happy to help where we can.

We’re a cultural and racial melting pot in North Idaho. I can’t tell you how many shades of white I’ve seen.

There seem to be 2 “sources” of racism: (1) the belief that some character traits are genetic and that some groups’ combination of those character traits are superior to other combinations. Don’t forget that it’s not always a “color” issue. Anyone from an area where longevity of the family tree is revered can tell you that “bloodlines” are often cherished as indicative of abilities, morals, intelligence, etc. (2) the other source is based more on fear of losing influence or power. If NI suddenly had a massive influx of, say, Lapps (can’t get much more northern European than that), and all at once, somebody thought that ballots weren’t fair unless some were printed in Lapp, and more and more stores were owned by Lapps, and lots of Lapp children were being enrolled in school to the point of becoming a majority…guess what the local hate (read: fear) would be directed toward. “They’re taking our jobs; I can’t even find a doctor who isn’t a Lapp; and I can’t understand what the (&%$$$!** Lapp doctors at the ER are saying.”

Recognition of the real issue, via education, is the only solution I see. I believe that is a primary purpose of the Human Rights Education Institute. The death of Richard Butler and the tearing down of the compound’s watchtower didn’t eliminate either of the 2 sources, just 2 of the symbols.

I hope that many of you are planning to go hear Desmond Tutu’s daughter speak at the HREI fundraiser dinner on the 16th. Tickets are still available. Hey, $35 for salmon OR vegan dinner?
