WinCo Foods is filing the preliminary paperwork for a
95,000-square-foot store in the northeast corner of the intersection of
Appleway and Ramsey Road in Coeur d’Alene. The physical store itself is
at least two years away in the acreage that now is a combination
gravel-sand pit. With the success of two new stores in Spokane, WinCo is banking on
the same for here. The WinCo stores have everything a supermarket
usually has – groceries, meats, produce, bulk foods, a bakery and a
large deli. The new store would employ about 200 people/Nils Rosdahl, SR Handle Extra. More here.
Question: Where do you shop for groceries?

YES!!! WOO HOO! This has made my day!
BigMac on March 15 at 9:11 a.m.
A WinCo will be very nice indeed. I did most of my shopping there when I lived in Moscow. Right now, I shop at Fred Meyer.

Super-1 in the CdA area, Yokes when we go to spokane and Costco for bulk items. Always look for sales.
Rosalind on March 15 at 10:47 a.m.
This is amazing news!
The downside? That area already sucks big time for traffic.
But I LOVE WinCo!!!!!
Super-1 is fabulous….except for some recent food concerns/problems that I’ve been hearing about.

Trading Co in Post Falls is great. The management at Tidyman’s did their best to run that store into the ground but the new owners have really turned it around.

Winco is the first stop and then Safeway and Rosauers if they have something we can’t get at Winco. We hit Costco in Clarkston once a month for a big shop on certain items we find we like better from them. We also hit the Grocery Outlet in Lewiston for items such as goat cheeses I can’t get elsewhere for a decent price.
One thing I love about Winco is the bulk bins and that they have the best fried chicken in town at their deli.

200 jobs! Woohoo!!!!
Shame it’s two years away when I figure the economy is no longer in a pit, but I guess unemployment will still be high then, just not freakishly high. So… woohoo!
Transplanted_Texan on March 15 at 2:31 p.m.
Oh, and Albertson’s on Prairie when I’m home, and two stores you’ve never heard of in NH when I’m not.
Stickman on March 15 at 6:09 p.m.
We have too many stores as it is, I thought a dog park was supposed to go there.
jazzyvandal on March 15 at 7:48 p.m.
That’s awesome! I can’t wait.
JIMMYMAC on March 16 at 1:09 a.m.
Albertsons, religiously. They support all great things Idaho. Winco will be very close to me but i’ll still hit up Hayden Albys.
Kage_Mann on March 16 at 7:53 a.m.
Why would anybody want to shop at Albertson’s? They don’t have many good deals, unless you want to buy 3 half racks for
under ten bucks or such.I shop at Wally World for bulk grocery purchases and then Super Fun One for good deals during the week.
Nick_Adams on March 16 at 11:20 a.m.
JIMMYMAC: Albertson’s is a shadow of its former self. Don’t forget that it’s now owned by SuperValu (based in Minnesota, I believe). Joe is probably spinning in his grave over the painful demise of what was once one of Idaho’s premier businesses.
WinCo is an Idaho-based company and employee-owned. On average, I save about 25% per trip to WinCo vs. Albertson’s. I’m not a huge fan of bagging my own groceries—since I suck at it, but the stores are well-run, clean and user-friendly. Plus, if you bring your own bags, you get a discount.
I completely agree with JeanC’s review of their fried chicken—it’s awesome.

Super One is great except for the parking.
Cindy_H on March 16 at 11:33 a.m.
I finally ventured into the North Spokane Winco, since it’s less than a mile from my home.
Wow! Two quarts of Vlasic Dill pickles for $2.98, Cocoa Puffs for $1.98, corn chips for $1.69. Great deals and a well organized store. BUT I was very disappointed that they didn’t have supersize products like giant bottles of ketchup and mustard etc. When you’re feeding four boys, (five if you count my husband and you really should) you quickly learn buying in bulk really does save you money, most of the time.
Costco will still get most of my food dollars, and Fred Meyer will get the rest simply because I don’t have a lot of time to shop. I need to be able to buy a lampshade, a quart of motor oil, salmon fillets, and soccer shoes at the same place. One-stop shopping rules.
I’ll check in at Winco and take advantage of the good deals, but I’m not breaking up with Fred.

Rosauers.
Their everyday prices are decent, their sale prices are quite good.
Their Huckleberries Natural Food section is diverse, and prices are reasonable.
The staff are friendly, it’s employee-owned, and they pay them well, and treat them well. When the Five Mile store had to close due to the roof collapsing because of the snow, their CEO announced all 120 employees would keep their jobs and associated benefits.
It’s a regional chain, so it’s profits go to the benefit of the regional economy.
