The Handle Extra debuts on Sunday today, with a coupla Merry Hucksters playing starring roles, including OrangeTV (with his Get Out! column), Betsy Russell (Eye On Boise tidbits) and yours truly with the print Huckleberries column. You’ll also get Nils Rosdahl and weatherwoman Michelle Boss. You can read all about it here. You won’t be able to get this one free on news stands. Subscribers in Kootenai, Bonner, and now Shoshone counties will find the new & improved Handle Extra in their newspapers. You can also pick it up at regular SR news stands where you’ll find my mug smiling back at you b/c the Handle Extra will serve as the front page for news stand sales. I’m happy about the new arrangement. It has only taken me 25 years to get my print column featured on Sundays. After you check it out, you can use this Wild Card for your own threads …

DFO, is this a prudent move by the SR considering the recent cutbacks? I personally was satisfied with the previous format.

I was so excited to read Nils Rosdahl’s column today and learn that WinCo is finally coming to Cd’A!

I just finished reading it. Very well done! Good to see you back in print. I always enjoy Nils column. I hope all of the parents of Sr.’s take notice of Taryn’s incredible rock bottom prices of Sr. portraits. I paid a fortune for my son’s. They are beautiful but it was very expensive.
I am going to set a pet appointment with her soon. Oscar and I need an updated photo.

Congrats DFO. My mom in Kellogg is so excited she can now be a small part of Huckleberries Online without having the internet! I had to bring her up to speed a bit on who was who last night, but she will catch on quickly.

I’m curious - If you have been seated in a restaurant and after having ordered coffee and maybe taken a couple sips of water the waiter walks up and coughs into his/her arm and shows obvious signs of a cold - running nose, cough, etc, is it ok to just bail out? I don’t want to catch that hideous thing. Who knows how much he/she will germinate my meal between the kitchen and my booth – and the bill at the end - the extra napkin - I could never enjoy eating a meal knowing 10 days of chills, sniffles, coughing, and headache could follow. Just wondering how others handle this type of situation. I bit the bullet and stuck it out. Thus far have not felt any signs of a cold, but I did douse my hands with sanitizer, gulped a couple of Airborn, and took a long, scalding hot shower as soon as I got home. Close call no doubt.

poolman: close call for sure. I always try to remember to wash my hands anytime I go anywhere. It has done me well, as I haven’t been sick all winter, not one single day. Plus a flu shot, which I totally believe in, has served me well.
hmoffsuite on March 15 at 6:07 p.m.
poolman. If you are that concerned with catching a bug, wear a surgical mask. They might call the cops thinking you are a robber tho. But, the waiter is just one guy in the food chain (pun intended). You got busboys, chefs and prep people as well as the waiter to consider. During the sick season, we try to not go out as much and mingle with people. Every year we go to the big car auctions with crowds and people from all over the world. It is one big petri dish. No sick bugs this year, thank goodness.

I had an example of why I love people from the Northwest
and especially Idaho last week.
My daughter lives in a small town and works for a small
hardware / building supply store. With the economy so
bad and construction almost non-existant, the owner
was having a hard time making payroll. He called a
employee meeting and informed them my daughter
was last hired and would be laid off. A lady spoke up
and said ” don’t fire her, I have been wanting to retire
for the last few years, let me retire instead” The owner
agreed and my daughter (a single mom w/two kids)
still has a job. This lady who had worked for this little
store for 17 years then called every one of the customers
who would only deal with her and made sure they knew
my daughter was her replacement and they would be
well taken care of. Not one customer has gone elsewhere.
((IDAHO people))

I”ve looked through my Sunday paper 3 times and haven’t found the handle extra. If it is in magazine format I may have tossed it with the adds.
mia on March 16 at 12:53 a.m.
DFO, We didn’t get a handle wrap or section with our paper down here in Moscow, even though it has been advertised all week, even today! What gives? Any idea? I was looking forward to it.
Dang!
EagleKeeper44, That’s an awesome story. Small businesses can rock the(ir) world, it’s refreshing when they do.
Kage_Mann on March 16 at 7:45 a.m.
The only times I ever had a newspaper subscription was in the winter, because I always used them latter to help me start a fire in my fireplace. With all the BS in the news, that’s where newspapers belong, all burnt up.Just like some of our past needs to be forgotten. We need to look towards the future with optimism.
Kibby on March 16 at 10:47 a.m.
Arpie…The Handle Extra should be the fist/front section of the newspaper. The name will appear right above our banner.
