Brand X: Recession Hits Home

He called yesterday to tell me that he had lost his job. It was hard to hear, but even harder for him to voice the words. It has been a couple of weeks, but it is still so incredibly painful for him to say out loud. It isn’t really real yet. This was his Dream Job, the career that he has prepared for all his life, the culmination of years of hard work and study, an uphill climb with as many steps backward as forward….. in an instant it is gone. I hear the pain in his voice, he sounds beaten, defeated/JanTri, Brand X Ranch. More here.

Question: Have you or a close friend or a loved one lost a job as a result of the current deep recession. How are you/they dealing with it?

Jana, I feel your anguish. My son was laid off his job after ten years, two months ago. He didn’t tell me for a few days and finally called. He was depressed and sad. This, too, shall pass, but when? He’s getting unemployment and he said with that and his savings, he should be good for several months, maybe through the summer. I caught my breath on his mention of a savings account. He actually listened to his mother!!!!

My good friend in Colorado lost her job on Friday after 15 years at the company. I talked to her on the phone yesterday for two and a half hours. At first she said everything was fine, she expected it, she was OK. Later on she admitted her feelings about it changed every other minute. Her biggest concern is going to be health insurance. I’ve become as much of an expert on the subject as I can in the three years since I lost my job and benefits. So I’ll pass along all my “wisdom” and tips for trying to find a job when you’re over 50 years old. It ain’t easy.

My Ben was made redundant last Thrusday on his birthday of all days…. only over here unemployment is $70-75 a week…. not half pay like in doodleland…… also the father of 2 of me nippers who worked for the same Engineering company was also made redundant….. knocking my earnings down by 2 thirds, as those 2 nippers were my main income earners…..

I had better get bigger shoulder pads cos looks like Im carrying everyone again on a pittance LOL

Um yes actually, I got sacked from the bank last week and I’ve put out over 50 resumes in with very little luck so far. I’m also looking for freelance writing and web design opportunities. Ideas anyone?

I’ve sat with way to many people at my cafe who have lost their jobs as of late. The emotions run the whole spectrum from crying to yelling at me. Most of them are people who have been customers for a long time and I wish I could do more, but we are hanging on by a thread. So, I buy them a drink and let them vent and pray.
I do that a lot lately. There is just to much pain out there right now and I wish as do a lot of people I know that there was more we could do. My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who has lost their jobs, or had their hours reduced.

Too many to count. The hopelessness and depression is heartbreaking. *sigh*
