New Tournament Picks UIdaho

The best season in 10 years is not yet over for the University of Idaho. The Vandals surprised their fans Sunday by being selected for participation in the inaugural CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament (CIT). Idaho will play host to Drake University at Memorial Gym at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday in the first round. The Vandals’ portable court in the Kibbie Dome has been removed in preparation for the dome’s renovation project. A UI release announcing the selection Sunday night didn’t mention its financial obligation, but teams in the tournament are generally required to pony up $43,500 in order to play a host role/Lewiston Tribune. More here.

Question (for skeptics): Does the Vandal turnaround in basketball this year finally show that the University of Idaho belongs in Division IA?

I think the Vandals proved the belonged in 1A when Chris Tomey coached the football team to a bowl game victory in 1998.

It is too bad it has been all downhill from there. I don’t think it had to be that way.

Actually, DFO, Idaho has been D-1 in basketball forever. The Big Sky, while a Division 1AA (or whatever it’s called now) football league, is and has been a D-1 basketball league.

By any realistic measure, this season has been a success for the Vandals BBall program. Their football program is a much different story. However, they seem to be competitive in most other WAC sports. If they can continue to support the costs of remaining in the WAC, then let them stay. Although, I hope that their football program improves soon. Having to play them every year only hurts my Broncos strenght of schedule.

Nick, NMSU and USU aren’t that good in football either…maybe they should get better too. Or maybe BSU can play a better OOC schedule.
