The complaint of a Maryland Mayor, frustrated over the image portrayed by bloggers, is lashing out. At no time in our history, except perhaps villages in revolutionary times.has the person on the street had such a voice. Suddenly, from every corner, politicians are being held responsible for their words and actions because more citizens have access to them and this makes them uncomfortable. Folks, this is democracy in action. Because suddenly we have more people paying attention, and perhaps being more critical is freedom of speech at it’s finest hour. Anonymous critics, however, are a pox on our house/Bayview Herb.
Question: Has the Internet and bloggers added to our freedom of speech? Or abused it?

“Has the Internet and bloggers added to our freedom of speech? Or abused it?”
This is a tough one, for me. It seems that for every rational voice on the internet, there are about two hundred crack-pots. Herb says: “At no time in our history, except perhaps villages in revolutionary times has the person on the street had such a voice.” I’d agree with this assessment, however, I’d add this statement as well: “At no time in our history, have our critical thinking skills been challenged by so many.” Why do I say this? Because too many times I’ve seen good people, although uneducated and lacking in critical thinking skills, be lured into crackpot thinking. It’s one thing to have free speech, it’s a completely other insidious and evil thing, to take advantage of the simple minded masses.

Added, definitely…the only way for public officials to avoid “gotchas” now is to stop talking out of both sides of their mouth because, as Herb wrote, their are too many people paying attention now…most politicians haven’t figured that out yet.

With the advent of the internet and blogging,it gives a voice to 98% of the people who didn’t think they had much of a voice, except to vote.
Today, you can join with numbersusa and help to fight illegal immigration and others to further a cause you may care about.
Politicians are going to have a hard time sneaking bills in and passing them into law, without the publics knowledge about them, because of the internet.
There needs to be state laws passed to deal with cyber-bullying
etc.

So, when do you think that will happen? Hasn’t yet.

The internet gives voice to 98% of the people and all they want to talk about is themselves.
Yeah right, we doing a good job holding our politicians to their promises.
Actually there is a bill in the House right now that would prevent the legislature from passing a law without giving the public several days to review it. That might be worthwhile supporting.

I blog, because I comment on what is found in the news and political commentary. Am I necessarily bullying? Boy, I hope not. But am I going to question and criticize? Ya betcha.

It’s a mixed bag. The internet allows for rapid and wide dissemination about legislation and the workings of government. The volume of communication to our various government officials has increased markedly, but the quality of that communications is very mixed.
To be an effective communicator with government officials, you can’t just rely on emails and/or electronic petitions etc. You still have to talk to them directly in the real world, face to face.
