High Noon: Wooing Of Mark Few

Gonzaga University Head Coach Mark Few leaves the NCAA tournament media interview room after taking questions about the upcoming game with Akron in Portland during the first round of the 2009 Tournament. Every time there is an opening for a Head Coaching job it seems Mark Few is mentioned as someone to interview for the position. Lately his name has been linked to Oregon. Question: Will this finally be the year that superb Gonzaga men’s basketball coach Mark Few receives an offer from another university, like Oregon, that’s too good to pass up?

That would make sense, leave a program where you make the NCAA Tournament every year and are a national name to a program that just finished last in the Pac-10. You’ll have to face tougher competition game-in and game-out and you wont be the big dog in the conference anymore when it comes to recruiting.

Arizona is a much more likely move than Oregon.

I doubt he will move at this point… I am pretty sure he could have had a job at nearly every school that has had an opening since his third or fourth year. If Money where a motivator for him, it would have worked by now.

Gonzaga is a top tier program, and the job his his for life and I think he is a bit attached to Spokane.

    But you never know.

I would be overjoyed if Few went to Oregon, not so much because I necessarily think he’s the best man for the job (though he very well may be) but because of how gleefully awesome it would be to throw it in the faces of Zags fans up here.

The talk is that with Mike Belotti taking over as UO AD, his first big move will be to put Ernie Kent and the men’s basketball program out of their misery and bring in someone big. Could be Few, but from what I’ve heard, that’s a long shot.

If he was that great of a coach, he would have had an offer he couldn’t refuse by now.

Face it, they haven’t made any noise in the tourney with Few as the coach. He recruits very well, but their offense (or lack of an offense) limits them against the better coaching in the dance.

I get the distinct impression that Few enjoys everything about his job and his program. As an avid fly fisherman there is no higher tier program anywhere that would get him closer to great fishing. There’s a nice Blanchette interview with Gonzaga’s President Spitzer today in the sports section which leaves the impression they both (he and Few) realize they are not done building the program yet.

I would be surprised to see him go anywhere soon.

I can’t see Few leaving yet. However, Oregon may give him a nice offer.

Poolman’s right. The Arizona job would be tough for Few to turn down. Imagine what he could do from a recruting standpoint if he was in the sun. He’s already getting some of the best talent from the west, including LA, and that’s to come and play in Spokane.

In Arizona he’d be taking over a program that’s even stronger than Gonzaga, and a much easier place to get commitments from young athletes.

Just ask Dennis Erickson if it’s easier to recruit top talent in Arizona or the Inland Northwest. No contest there.

Mark Few will obviously be approached and he will listen,BUT he is going nowhere.

Hard to say if Coach Few will vamoose anytime soon. He’s a big fish in a small pond (The WCC) and seems to be happy in Spokane.

However, there’s no comparison between the PAC 10 and the WCC. Maybe Few has aspirations of a national championship, that’s much more likely in Tucson or Eugene than in Spokane.

What about Tony Bennett? PAC 10 coach of the year a year ago, he and Dick brought the Cougs back from the dead. How long will we be able to keep Tony?
