So then a coupla days ago, teenage daughter ever so casually mentions to me that River 99.9 over in Spokane has a guest listener DJ gig every Saturday night. Kid has NO idea what she
unleashed. None at all. I filled out the online application to guest host, sent it in and fully expected to get back some form letter type thingie thanking me for taking the time to fill it out and that I would be put on a list or something like that and maybe they would get back to me in a few months. Well. I got a very prompt email back approximately seven hours later. Talk about moving fast … I will be on THIS Saturday night (March 21); from 9 to 11 p.m. PST. For those outside the general Spokane area, the station has streaming audio online/Liz, My Life’s A Freak Show. More here.

I used to do radio, and miss it. Back when I had the chance to expand my role I was making good money where I wuz. I did a talk show on a local station in Tacoma, Washington. KLAY. This station was owned by clay Huntington, a legendary former sports announcer. Since I have a good face for radio, I’d like to get back into a local spot if the opportunity arises.

I’m hoping I’ll remember to listen tomorrow night. I’ve put it on my gadget post-it. I really enjoyed Liz and her beautiful daughter who can text at the speed of sound.

Hey Liz live blog at the same time on HBO and we could get something going — especially if you play some older “Butt Rock” as my kids call it (You know: Rush, Styx, AC/DC, etc. Heck I’d even listen to early 70s, Elton John, James Taylor, Carly Simon.) Too bad I didn’t have a brew ready, we could sit in the stickman’s driveway and take in the show. But, I’ll try to listen from home anyway…

I should add that this was not some unique opportunity for me. They really want listeners to come in and do this Sat nite thing. They have an application on the station’s web site. I was amazed at how quickly they got back to me. You do NOT have to have any experience; I happened to, but that doesn’t play into it AT ALL.
I couldn’t help but notice a parallel to what is going on over here on HBO..that being that in this internet age, building a community that takes the consumers of various forms of media into being active participants in that media is tantamount in importance. Various media outlets that do this are WAY ahead of the curve.
I have noticed that Dave, Ken and Molly over on KZZU (which is owned by and in the same building as River 99.9; I never knew that until this week) have their own individual twitter streams and a collective twitter stream going the entire time that they are on the air. That lends a whole new level of interactivity to their show. With various internet gizmos that you can program to be your own personalized station, having that connection with your audience might be the difference between remaining viable and, uh, going the way of the Seattle PI. Because at this point in time, radio is no longer just about the music because people can get that music in so many other ways.

I would love to have a call-in advice show ala/Dr. Laura but I’d be a little less sweet and a little more blunt :-)
Alas, Liz I’m in Seattle and will miss your DJ Debut! Hope you rock ‘em!
Liz on March 21 at 12:13 p.m.

I’ve got Internet alright, but tonight I’ll be attending a performance of the Merchant of Venice at Seattle Center, followed by dinner at the Dahlia Lounge. Gathering material for my newspaper column is REALLY hard work and requires such sacrifice, but by golly, somebody’s gotta do it.

Cindy - good choice of restaurants. Tom Douglas is one of the regions top chefs. I remember watching him take down Morimoto in an Iron Chef competition a few years ago. That guy is money…

Oh that’s okay, Cindy. Have fun. And enjoy that dinner! We try to get over to Seattle or PDX pretty regularly and eating is a major component of him.
