Item: Obama apologizes for Special Olympics gaffe/AP
More Info: President Barack Obama has apologized to the chairman of the Special Olympics for his late-night talk show quip equating his bowling skills to those of athletes with disabilities. Appearing on “The Tonight Show” Thursday, the president told host Jay Leno he’d been practicing at the White House’s bowling alley but wasn’t happy with his score of 129. Then he remarked: “It was like the Special Olympics or something.” The audience laughed, but the White House quickly recognized the blunder.
Question: Was it important that President Obama apologize for this offhand comment?

I have to wonder about the public flogging that would have occurred had this comment been made by a conservative…

Yes. And he deserves to catch some flack for this comment. Although it scares me to think how Palin is probably totally psyched he said this. I can see her campaigning already.

He totally wasn’t thinking before he spoke.. that’s for sure. That happens when people let their guard down and try to engage in humor. Nobody ever said he was perfect.. well, I suppose some people did, but that was dumb. I never said he was perfect…but he’s still my president, and I’ll still vote for him, unless someone better comes along.
One thing’s for sure, though, he’s absolutely correct about most of the people he’s having to work with in D.C. being mentally challenged.

Yes. Comment was offensive. I don’t care who makes jokes at the expense of people with disabilities. It’s not funny.

Scootermom, I have scoliosis. I am a person with a disability. I also have a lung condition. I thought Obama was quite funny in saying that his bowling ability was still poor enough to qualify him for the Special Olympics. He was engaging in self-deprecating humor. Only the utterly sensitive and easy to offend would have regarded such a statement as a gaffe. I can laugh at myself. I could never do cartwheels, I never developed the hand/eye coordination to really bowl well, I don’t do sports now because I never could master baseball or basketball.
I don’t and will never have objections to Obama’s attempt at humor.

There is nothing so sad as an entire country without a sense of humor.

I’m enjoying the spectacle of conservatives engaging in political correctness and liberals telling everyone to lighten up.

In these PC times, Obama’s apology conforms to another set of initials: CYA.

Got a question, escapee; only in the news media, and particularly CNN’s Anderson Cooper made a very big issue out of Obama’s joke, literally whipping up outrage that might have passed otherwise. Something that CNN let pass during the 8 years of the GW tenure. And GW did a whole lot more to engage in offensive language. Obama recognizes that his bowling ability remains poor. And anyone can engage in a poor choice of words. So? At what point in time can you say of yourself that you never offended someone? I can’t even claim that for myself. The problem for this nation today, is that people are too prone to be easily offended and want restitution for being “dissed.” But at what point in time do they plan to grow up and recognize that they don’t live in an Utopian world and there are going to be rough bumps along the road. The issue here is forgiveness.
