Arpie: Joan Baez played a concert at the Panida in Sandpoint tonight. She did not deny that she was at Farragut thirty eight years ago. Tonight’s show was amazing. A living legend, still hitting the high notes. She had the sold out crowd of aging hippies wrapped around her finger. She ended the night leading us all in Amazing Grace. The Panida never sounded sweeter.
Question: Who is your favorite folk singer?
PatrickH on March 23 at 8:33 a.m.
It would have to be The Be Good Tanyas or so that I don’t get called some young whipper snapper who doesn’t know good music, Peter, Paul, And Mary.
Cindy_H on March 23 at 8:34 a.m.
Janis Ian

Joan Baez was at the Panida? That explains all those Subarus headed north.

Dolly Parton.

Dolly Parton is a folk singer? Anyway, my favorite is Phil Ochs, who was a very intensely topical folksinger. There’s a great Ochs biography, written by Marc Elliot, “Death Of A Rebel” which is a great read, which gives much insight into the Folk Scene, Society in General in the late ‘60s, as well as his own personal tragedy. Joan Baez is good, but I can listen to her quivering vocal vibrato for 10 minutes or so…

Joan is more of a cultural icon than a folk singer. She has the songs, the voice, and the drive to change history, as she did in the Chec Republic.
My favorite folk singers are more local and more just folk. Montana’s Walkin’ Jim Stoltz, the late Utah Philips, and Idaho’s own Rosalie Sorrels.

I suppose if I were to be serious, I’d have to say Nick Drake.

gee, Arpie, thanks for mentioning Rosalie Sorrels and Utah Philips. I was thinking of the late 50’s/early 60’s when folk was king. For that period, I’ll stick with Tom Lehrer.

Nick Drake. Interesting choice. Not bad. On the other hand, I had no idea Tom Lehrer was a singer. I’ve seen his name bandied about. He sings? Really?

Thank you Jeanne: Cat Stevens back in the day. And Dylan, and Donovan. And Joan. Too many to mention, though I will ponder it tonight and let you know many more tomorrow.
