Stallings: Minnick Resembles Me

While attending different events in Boise over Frank Church Weekend, I was a little surprised and dismayed to hear grumbling about a few of Congressman Walt  Minnick’s votes.  Apparently, in the minds of a few of our Party members, our newly elected Democratic Congressman is not voting with President Obama - or with the Democrats in Congress - often enough.  In fact, I heard one loyal Democrat say that she was so angry that she couldn’t vote for Mr. Minnick again.  As I reflected on these comments, I found myself smiling because it wasn’t that many years ago that many in our Party were saying the same things about me/Richard Stallings, former Idaho congressman. More here.

Question: Are you satisfied with Minnick’s performance as the 1st Congressional District representative so far?

No, not really, but I’m holding my tongue for now.

I applaud Mr. Minnick for voting for the country first, not the party line.

No. I was hopeful we had elected a democrat. Unfortunately it’s an Idaho democrat, which isn’t much. I suppose he’s trying to appease the majority of knotheads in the state, but I’m convinced they’d elect another sali in a minute, if it weren’t for his negative but true publicity. Idahoans routinely disappoint and nearly disgust me with their voting, so Minnick’s votes are not surprising. Pollyanna that i am, I still look for that honest politician, but Minnick doesn’t meet even that low bar.

I don’t think he is trying to appease anyone, He said right up front that he wasn’t a liberal and has proved it. End of story. On the bright side, we have a congressman that unlike previously, is not embarrassing the state. If those liberals that are ganging up to oppose Minnick stop to think, it could be worse. They could nominate a flaming liberal and get a dunce back as a reward.

Minnick needs to man up and quit the pandering game. Example: He condemns AIG exec’s taking bonuses but is silent about Bank of America/Merrill exec’s who took them as well. Hint: Band of America contributed $6900 to Minnick’s campaign. Doesn’t he know the Rethuglicans he’s pandering to will screw him in the next election?

I am pleasantly surprised that Walt has not been pressured by the Dem Leadership to fall in line, but with the majority that they have, he is not needed to be forced into a liberal vote.

I am enjoying the heck out of watching all these Idaho Dems wringing their hands as their anti-Sali hero is not in line with their “I’m going to save everybody” president. It’s like seeing your old computer abend.

I am somewhat disheartened at Sue’s comments though:
“an Idaho democrat, which isn’t much” - Sue - aren’t you a democrat from Idaho?

“Idahoans routinely disappoint and nearly disgust me with their voting” - OK - this tells me that you must not live in Idaho right now. If you do, then I politely suggest moving.

“I still look for that honest politician, but Minnick doesn’t meet even that low bar.” Worst comment of all. Minnick is doing what he said he would do. So in Sue’s world, if you don’t vote the liberal line, then you are not honest? I get very tired of people attacking the integrity of pols just because they think differently than we do. I disagree with a lot of Walt’s views, but I am pleasantly surprised by his integrity so far. I think your comments, Sue, are unfair and unfounded.
