Stickman: Never Forget Veterans

RE: LaSarte finally gets hero’s welcome/Ralph Bartholdt, St. Maries Gazette-Record

Stickman: I tell the story sometimes of a young man who on his last day in country, was killed in an ambush. One of the tears of my life, even to this day. I cry everytime I think of him. His name was Billy, and he was 19. And another of a young man who was wounded calling in an air strike on his own position. He wished he died that day, but didn’t. He is still here, and I take the time each week to go to his house and give him a bath, as he is embarrassed to let anyone else do it. Did we serve, damn right! Never forget the ones that came before you to keep you free.

Question: Do you know someone who was killed or injured in war? Who?

I dated a Vet for a little over a year. He had been taken prisoner by the Viet Cong and was held in horrible conditions too aweful to share here. He rarely talked about his imprisonment and only after being “deep in the bottle” an affliction that is destined to take his life. Even though the war has long been over, he still fights it every day.

Two men I served with in the early 90s were wounded in Iraq. Another was killed in Afghanistan.

A buddy of mine just left on his first combat tour in Iraq. He has served two tours in Afghanistan. The US armed forces are performing magnificently, under great strain, in two unpopular wars. We should all be grateful for their service.

As a Vietnam Vet, I take pride in what I did, no matter the history or the conclusions. I went because I thought it was the right thing to do. Now, looking back, it was all a terrible mistake. I hope we all see that fact, they are there now for us.

As a Vietnam Vet and Career military, I also take
pride that during my watch of 25 years the USA
remained free. Today my son stands watch and
carries on the family tradition of defending this
nation. Our country is fortunate that so many of
it’s young men and women voluntarily write that
check for up to and including their very life to
    purchase our continued feedom.

    Thanks Eagle Keeper, well said.
