Jerry Has Left The Building

First, a disclosure. Jerry Carlson has been my insurance agent for 15 years or so. Now, onward. In the mail Monday, my wife and I each got this note from Farmers District Manager Gary Louis: “Your former Farmers agent Jerry Carlson is no longer with our Companies as of March 26, 2009.” Your policies will temporarily be served at our district office, until such time an agent is assigned to provide srvice for you.” Blah, blah, blah. Seems Farmers takes the approach that your guilty until proven innocent, Carlson, of course, is in legal hot water with the feds for allegedly being involved in cocaine dealing.

I reckon Farmers has a more loose investigatory body and standards for dismissal than the Constitution requires for criminal defendants. I assume they operated on some sort of employment arrangement. If its not in writing then Carlson would have few rights under Idaho law to his benefit. So it might be as arbitrary as you suggest. He could even be fired for being gay without consequence to Farmers. Certainly this process is not as transparent since personnel matters are protected from inquiry. But it sounds to me like Carlson put himself out there as a public figure which I’m sure inured to his benefit. As the old saying goes the bigger they are the harder they fall. Did he ever sell insurance with Nonini?

I’d rather have an insurance agent dealing cocaine than heading up committees on education (Nonini) or finance (Dean Cameron, who is from my hometown, unfortunately). Perhaps if more insurance agents dealt coke, the Idaho Legislature wouldn’t be run by the louses.

Jerry has struggled with cocaine for a long, long time. It’s not as if he hasn’t had sufficient opportunity to get this sorted out in his life. To date, I am not aware of policy holders coming forth to say that they ended up uninsured as their deposits and down payments went to Jerry personally instead of to secure coverage. So Jerry’s business and philanthropic affairs seem well in order. This is really sad but Jerry had to know it was coming. Well, actually, as an addict he might think it was coming but that he, because of his special power and stance in life, could beat this. too bad. I wish him super well. And strength, to stay off the powder.

I suppose 5g of blow could be considered a personal usage amount for a person who’s heavily addicted.

Did they find the blow BOTH on his person, AND in the storage shed?

I had a Farmers Insurance agent once who was fired for having anonymous gay sex in public parks and restrooms. Gives a whole new meaning to the kind of “Blow” you’re talking about here…

    this is a right-to-work state.

Sorry to see you’ve lost your crack (I mean, good) agent, DFO.

Yeesh misc, right to work has nothing to do with this. Don’t confuse it with employee-at-will.

cantyoureadthesigns, the 5 grams is in relation to a single possession charge filed at the state level. Mr. Carlson also faces federal charges related to the alleged distribution of more than 500 grams of cocaine. I speak frequently with the ISP lieutenant in charge of the investigation but have yet to get enough for an update.

I will be interested to see if you come up with anything new on this one Meghann. I sell insurance for MetLife Auto&Home, and know that it is not only a bad place Jerry has put himself at this time in his life, but also a bad place for his customers. I would check around for a new agent, or get some quotes from other companies (there are other companies more competitive than Farmers in Kootenai County). You may be surprised how much money you can save, and what good agents there are out there.
