Wild Card/Weekend — 5/3/09

This day in history belongs to the Margarets — Margaret Mitchell won the Pulitzer Prise in 1939 for her bestseller “Gone With The Wind” and Margaret Thatcher became the first female prime minister of England in 1979.  Also,  at age 54, Willie Shoemaker became the oldest jockety to win the Kentucky Derby in 1986, aboard Ferdinand. Today is National Join Hands Day and Frankie Valli’s 72nd birthday. Please take time to vote in this weekend’s poll re: the torture issue. Now, I’m replaying the Saturday Wild Card, so you can see what others have said so far on the weekend Wild Card …

FYI - May is National Mental Health Month. In the spirit of mental health, I'm curious. What is everybody's favorite movie about people with psychological disorders? (I have 12 suggestions on my blog: http://nicholasccasey.blogspot.com/20…)

Hey, you guys aren't choosing from Nic's list! From your list, Nic, it's a tie for me between Gilbert Grape and Rain Man.

I like a lot of Nic's choices. But have to go with Gilbert Grape or I am Sam.
Btw, the soundtrack from I am Sam is wonderful!

I always liked Harold and Maude, and the music was great.

    Memento

    Not on list:

Charly (poster title: CHAЯLY) is a 1968 film which tells the fictional story of a mentally retarded bakery worker who is the subject of an experiment to increase human intelligence. The film stars Cliff Robertson, Claire Bloom, Lilia Skala, Leon Janney and Dick Van Patten.
Cliff Robertson won the Academy Award for his performance.

Loosely based on the book Flowers for Algernon.

I saw this movie in the late 70's as part of the preparation for a small part I had in our high school production of the play. Really had a powerful impact on me.

I still have my copy of Flowers for Algernon. Great book.

Fight Club, Rain Man and As Good as it Gets.

Hmoff added a classic with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

I'd add The Shining. Nicholson clearly has an eerie ability to portray deeply troubled individuals.

Christian Bale is also very good at it—The Mechanic, Batman and American Psycho come to mind.

I should clarify. The character Charly did not have a psychological disorder, per se. But a whole lot of other characters, “perfectly normal”, sure as hell did.

    Scamp!

One of the most banned books of all time. Well #47 of the top 100, still scandalous.

Those “racy” Librarians damn pervert ACLU'ers have won most of the battles to keep it in the public and school libraries, places I consider near holy to our culture. Or should be, maybe used to be.

Wow! A big day for me. In addition to being a banned book owner, we also adopted a new addition.
Of course, I was hoping for a girl.
But when I saw a hyperactive looking baby, looking for all the world like he could use some Ritalin, I knew he belonged to us.
Especially when I picked him up and he totally relaxed into my arms and gave a deep sigh.
I couldn't put him back into his cage, now could I?
If I could, I'd post a picture of Milo. Two-months old and 2 1/2 pounds of kitty fluff.
    Sigh.
It feels good to have a baby in the house again :-)

I just heard on the news that Congressman Jack Kemp died. He was a candidate for Best Hair In Congress. And he might have had Prezzidential Aspirations at one time.

This CdA Press story explains a lot. You don't even have to read between the lines very much:

Fight Club is in my top ten usually, so I gotta go with that one. Others from Nic's list I'd choose are Memento and As Good as it Gets. Curious on the absence of Cuckoo and Catch-22. Of course with the latter, its still a question on whether Yosarian was crazy or the world was. Fisher King, Igby Goes Down and Donnie Darko are also excellent films. Actually just about anything by Terry Gilliam may qualify and are among my favorites.

To be honest, I have severe mental illness in my family (I mean, look at me!) and my mother has worked very closely with people who have developmental disabilities. At one point, she worked with Patti Duke for some issues for NIC.

But, not one to be ridiculously sensitive to life (because we should be able to laugh about our issues, I truly believe that helps us cope), pretty much every movie on Nic's list is awesome. I was too young when I saw Benny & Joon, so I don't remember it. And there's one or two others I haven't seen.

I can't believe people haven't listed “What About Bob?” higher up. That movie is awesome!

I don't know how to tell my family, 'Please don't indoctrinate my child against the president.' Right now I'm trying to think of a way to bring my little girl back around at least to neutral. I don't want her going to school saying she hates the president. Her teacher, who likely as not will be a black woman, will think I taught her that, naturally, and I voted for the guy. The other thing is, when the president was from the other party, all my little girl ever heard out of me was love your country, love your president, whether I thought the guy was worth a nickle or not. I think children should be left out of some conversations.
