Charlie: High Places Torture Me

Charlie: Whippersnapper poses the question, “What is torture?” All kidding aside, for me it is the fear of falling from high places. The closer I get to the roof eave, the more my heart races. If I were forced to stand on a high place it would be torture to me. The Sears Tower is putting in a glass floor on one of their observation decks, me standing on it would not be pleasant. The funny thing about me, I love to fly, in an airplane, no problems. Go figure!

Question: Not to minimize the terrific discussion re: torture over the weekend, but Charlie makes an interesting observation. The Sears Tower glass floor on an observation deck would be torture for him due to his fear of heights. Considering your phobia(s), what would be torture for you?

The same. There is a fun house in Newport, Oregon that I love to go through - it may be the Wax Museum. One of the last places to go through, though, just before the exit is a room with a glass floor that looks like it’s in outer space. Stars and planets and utter darkness. I KNOW I will fall to my death if I step on it. I’ll even touch it, and tell me self, “See, Silly, it’s a solid floor.” I can’t do it. I slink under the rope that keeps people out and go out the service entrance.

There are other things: ladders, fire escape stairs, step stools, the Seattle Space Needle, outside elevators, Imax films, and the Sylvester Stallone movie, Cliffhanger.

I’m with Charlie and Jeanie, some high places do scare me. I love to fly also and that has never bothered me. Or jumping out of planes or hanging by some bungee cords. But every once in awhile, a place like the Space Needle or the top of the Eiffel Tower is very frightening. Go figure.
