OrangeTV: Let’s celebrate the holiday with a gut-wrenching reminder how racist and paranoid some of our local residents are, shall we? Be warned, some of these reader comments (currently posted on the Coeur d’Alene Press online site) are astounding, angering, and scary … (Coeur d’Alene Press thread here)
DFO: I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing by re-printing the thread above from OrangeTV’s comments post. It contains racist tripe that’s typical of too many threads on the Coeur d’Alene Press online site. Who knows? Mebbe the Press brain trust can be embarrassed into cleaning up its Web site.

“Mebbe the Press brain trust can be embarrassed into cleaning up its Web site.”—are they capable of shame? Personally I think it a useful tool and I applaud your efforts. But sometimes I wonder if they’re impervious.

Are there any “adults” over at the Press? It appears the answer is NO! In the past I would put my two cents in on some of the “letters” but quickly learned facts were not welcome. I like facts, they bolster arguments.
To the people over there who don’t choose a name or pen name, you are like the cowardly lion.

I didn’t read the entire thread (too long). But as far up as I read it seemed like a handful of the usual idiots trying to say something as outrageous as possible because they have an anonymous forum from which to seek attention. They make the same asinine comments whatever the topic of the day is.
That said, I also saw a number of people who are NOT racist but who have some very real concerns about illegal immigration. Combined with concerns that even immigrants who are themselves here legally are likely to be aiding and abetting ILLEGAL immigration of family members.
I see nothing racist about this. It is very sad when the lines between LEGAL and ILLEGAL are deliberately blurred to make anyone who would like to see the laws adhered to appear to be a hateful racist bigot.

I agree Liz. I browsed the comments and saw some anonymous idiots blathering on. But I failed to see the horrible RACIST center of all Coeur d’Alene. I saw one gal call the idiot racist. I saw some good points and counterpoints about illegal aliens. But lets not be pointing at the demons of the opposition when that finger could have been pointed here a while back.

More frightening than the Press allowing the dialog is the assumption I have that the commenters are members of our community!

Thanks CB. I do feel sometimes that those who have real concerns about illegal immigration get shouted down and called names when there is a vast difference between racism and the concerns mentioned above. Last time I was over in PDX, that bastion of liberalism, I picked up one of the PDX equivalents of the Inlander. There was an article in there about how illegal immigrants were engaging in identity theft, primarily so that they could get their hot little digits on social security numbers. I fully expected the article to take a disapproving tone on this. Nope. The gist of it was to tell the people whose identities had been swiped to just chill out because the illegals just wanted to be able to work. I kid you not. I read and reread the article several times to make sure I really read what I thought I read. Sadly enough, I did.
