Nurse Week Wild Card — 5/7/09

At this moment, the police scanner is reporting a semi that’s on its side (trailer flipped on completely over) at Huetter and Seltice Way, blocking Huetter. No one was injured. But a good amount of fluid (of some kind) has leaked onto the roadway. On this day in history: In 1429, The English siege of Orleans was broken by Joan of Arc. In 1940, Winston Churchill became British Prime Minister.  In 1945, Germany signed unconditional surrender ending World War II. It would take effect the next day. In 1919, Eva Peron was born. We’re in the middle of National Nurse Week. In the news this evening, . And the latest Wild Card is in play …

Last night I had the honor of representing a scholarship foundation that gives scholarships to nursing students. WSU-Spokane had a donor recognition dinner and my foundation was one of the top honors for distributing over $100,000 in scholarships to nursing students. My table had the current group and I was very, very impressed! I have coordinated every set of applicants for the last ten years and each and every one of the students I look at are talented beyond words, very dedicated to helping others, and extremely bright and compassionate. We also acknowledged Florence Nightingale, whose birthday is May 12. Nurses rock!

Thanks, DFO, for noting this while I was in Seattle: CityLink ridership numbers continue to grow.

From fewer than 9,000 riders at its inception in November 2005 to nearly 40,000 riders per month now, CityLink has been the fastest-growing system in the country. It is also still the only one that partners a Tribe with local governments to provide free public transit.

As noted this week, we received a national Ridership Award from the Federal Transit Administration on in Seattle on Monday, recognizing CityLink’s incredible growth. It was great to be on hand for the ceremony, as many of the nation’s public transit providers were there as well. The Tribe was rightfully recognized for their support of the system both financially and operationally, while the members of the Kootenai Metropolitan Planning Organization (KMPO) were also noted for their support.

Today, at 1:30 we will present the Award to the full KMPO Board at our monthly meeting at the ITD offices on Prairie Avenue. As grantees for the FTA funds, the Kootenai County Commissioners will be asked to display the Award at the Courthouse, recognizing their particular support for public transit on behalf of the KMPO.

My thanks go out to all of those who have supported CityLink and its remarkable contribution in providing free transit to so many in our area.

    Say it ain’t so, Joe!

“Samuel Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, tells TIME he’s so outraged by GOP overspending, he’s quitting the party — and he’s the bull’s-eye of its target audience.

But he also said he wouldn’t support any cuts in defense, Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid — which, along with debt payments, would put more than two-thirds of the budget off limits.”

    http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1896588,00.html

What mental midget will replace Joe The Plumber and continue to speak for the “we’re stupid” wing of the GOP?

  • toadman on May 07 at 11:41 a.m.

Heh.. that’s a good article spokelooneh.. Me like.

Poor Wurzelbacher…fifteen minutes = over…what will he do now? I suppose he could GO BE A PLUMBER for cryin out loud, eh?

I actually never thought I’d see the day when I was in the ideological majority…it’s kind of a weird feeling.

Just when I thought all the nonsense regarding Obama’s birth certificate had blown over, I ran across this item today on an investing blog that I frequent. Interesting to read and they are calling the matter the ‘smoking gun’.

    Thanks toadman.

For a little more context as to the cited passage, the crux, or theme, of the article in TIME is the incredibly shrinking GOP, and what various entities are trying to do about that, as in messaging and recruitment, saying that guys like Joe/Sam the Plumber are in the bull’s eye of who they are targeting to stay, or join the GOP.

“These days, Republicans have the desperate aura of an endangered species. They lost Congress, then the White House; more recently, they lost a slam-dunk House election in a conservative New York district, then Senator Arlen Specter. Polls suggest that only one-fourth of the electorate considers itself Republican, that independents are trending Democratic and that as few as five states have solid Republican pluralities. And the electorate is getting less white, less rural, less Christian — in short, less demographically Republican.”

hmo - glad to see you feel the Obama birth certificate stuff is “nonsense,” because it is.. also, this article you found seems to be from several weeks ago, when Obama was in England visiting with Gordon Brown. I suppose nothing ever came of it because we haven’t heard about it since then?

I’d check snopes.com again to see if they’ve done their own investigation into this document from Occidental College.

Hoax. There never was any such AP story, and the faked story was dated April 1. Guess why? APRIL FOOLS! Duh!

The hoax was dutifully repeated (as true) on hundreds of right wing web sites.

hmmm… HMO people might find the stuff you post to be more credible if there weren’t clear fact misstated in them or if they were at least current. Case in point, the article say that ” under growing pressure from several groups, Justice Antonin Scalia announced that the Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to hear arguments concerning Obama’s legal eligibility to serve as President in a case brought by Leo Donofrio of New Jersey” which is apparently not true. The court declined to hear the Donofrio v. Well on Dec 8th of last year. I looked on the SCOTUS docket and there is no pending case with Donofrio…so the article is out of date or is just wrong.

At this point, the near term future of the republican party is in the hands of Obama. If his first term is successful and his stimulus plan and recent legislation fixes the economy and doesn’t create other problems, the democrats will be running things for quite some time. If, on the other hand, his policies result in a further deterioration of the economy and other matters, the republicans will bounce back, very strong, as they did following Jimmy Carter administration. Its all up to Obama and the sucess of his administration. And, fwiw, that IS imo.

    Well played, indeed.

  • Sisyphus on May 07 at 12:24 p.m.

I wholeheartedly agree hmoff. The Republicans are certainly doing nothing now to help the country. And with them out of power they can’t screw it up any worse. They might as well sit back and enjoy the exile. Did you see that polling result that people are starting to feel the country is finally heading in the correct direction? First time in several years.

  • hmoffsuite on May 07 at 12:30 p.m.

Sis >> ” Did you see that polling result that people are starting to feel the country is finally heading in the correct direction?”

i see those polls, Sis, and I think it is great. The proof will be in the pudding, of course, but right now the most important thing is for people to ‘think’ things are headed in the right direction. I have no problem with that whatsoever.

  • BethB on May 07 at 12:45 p.m.

Oh, DFO. I’m sorry to have to tell you that you’ve been given inaccurate information. May 7 is the day that Joan of Arc was wounded in battle in the shoulder with an arrow; had one of the generals break off the shaft and put her back on her horse so she could continue to lead the forces in their battle. Then, on May 8, the English capitulated, and the seige on Orleans was over. Her efforts began just about a week earlier - likely the evening of April 27 was when she arrived near Orleans. The seige had been going on for years before that. (I love Joan of Arc. Can you tell?)

  • spokelooneh on May 07 at 2:37 p.m.

What is so deliciously ironic is that some of the most rabid GOP members and supporters PROUDLY refer to THEMSELVES, as DITTOHEADS!

That just repeating stuff over and over is actual political discourse.

It is true to a certain extent that how well the economy recovers (if it does at all, I have my doubts) will affect if the Democratic party continues to enjoy the popular support it has today. But that’s always the case for the party in power.

The writer of the TIME article posits, however, that the problem is that the standard ideas being promulgated by the GOP are not popular, not LIKED, by more and more of the general public, as a matter of policy.

“The Democratic critiques of the GOP — that it’s the Party of No, or No Ideas — are not helpful either. It’s silly to fault an opposition party for opposition; obstructionism helped return Democrats to power. Republicans actually have plenty of ideas.

That’s the problem. The party’s ideas — about economic issues, social issues and just about everything else — are not popular ideas. They are extremely conservative ideas tarred by association with the extremely unpopular George W. Bush, who helped downsize the party to its extremely conservative base. A hard-right agenda of slashing taxes for the investor class, protecting marriage from gays, blocking universal health insurance and extolling the glories of waterboarding produces terrific ratings for Rush Limbaugh, but it’s not a majority agenda.
    …”

  • Cabbage Boy on May 07 at 2:52 p.m.

Spokaloon, you do realize that the “ditto” in dittohead is because instead of the callers all saying “love the show” they say megaditto.

But never let facts get in the way of a good diatribe.

And no, I have listened or watched Rush in over 10 years. In fact it was when he jumped on the Bush bandwagon that he lost me.

  • Sisyphus on May 07 at 3:22 p.m.

Consistent much CB. First I don’t understand the factual distinction you’re trying to make on the word ditto. Its used because they are of one mind, emphasized by his criticism of the Republican listening tour yesterday in which he advocates to instead do a ‘teaching’ tour. Of course, a radio shock jock doesn’t want feedback. Second, why do you defend him if you don’t like him. Your reasons kind of establish one of Spoke’s points.

I think Spokeloon hit some pretty relevant themes there. Although I’d argue that the Republicans losing credibility has more to do with their unpopularity than some of their core policies. Certainly that explains the rising popularity of the Ronulans. And I think he should distinguish between branding and critiquing.

  • Cabbage Boy on May 07 at 3:37 p.m.

Sis, it is all about consistency.

I was refuting the reference of Dittohead to this line.
“That just repeating stuff over and over is actual political discourse.”

If you want to criticize Rush and his followers, go ahead, but get the facts straight. Otherwise you are no better than the “Obama is a closet Muslim” crowd.

  • toadman on May 07 at 4:15 p.m.

“Otherwise you are no better than the “Obama is a closet Muslim” crowd.” -CB

You know, I was dubious that anyone really believed this outside a few nitwits and crackpots online, but then, right before the election, an older man who I had previously had some modicum of respect for, said in all seriousness to me in person, that he believed it to be true.

    Amazing, the power of rumor.

  • Truly on May 07 at 4:25 p.m.

I have to blow my horn for a second: my daughter in law, Michelle, will be graduating on Saturday from the UW and then on to her Maters in the fall and all the while being pregnant for the first time. She has worked soooooo hard and is brilliant and a scholar. Bob and I are so proud.

I am sure there are many of you who will be celebrating various graduations in the next days to come so tell us about them and quit bickering over the small stuff.

  • spokelooneh on May 07 at 4:40 p.m.

“Cabbage Boy on May 07 at 2:52 p.m.

Spokaloon, you do realize that the “ditto” in dittohead is because instead of the callers all saying “love the show” they say megaditto.”

Not sure that’s quite correct, CB.

It started out with the caller wanting to say he agreed with the previous caller, shortened then to just saying “ditto” to get on to what the caller wanted to say. Then it morphed into a sort of dual meaning, the original, and a celebratory salute to El Rushbo himself.

Dittoheads are what El Rushbo calls his listeners, tho he insists that does not mean they necessarily agree with them. I’d guess at least 80% do.

    And as one ex-dittohead says:

“Can you describe the typical dittohead? Are they really the smartest, most informed radio listeners in the country?
[Laughs]. I believe that’s how they feel. I know I did. Rush makes you feel like an insider—like you know what’s going on politically and everyone else is an idiot. Having been a dittohead I can tell you that the only benefit is that you really know one side of an issue; you know nothing about the other side of that issue. You maintain a blissful ignorance about anything that disagrees with your worldview”

Yes, context is important. But what must someone think, who’s unaware, and trying to learn about American politics, say a foreign exchange student for example. She sees that the followers of one of the most important (however you want to judge that) figures in the GOP, call themselves “dittoheads”. They have their own T-shirts and mugs proclaiming to be “dittoheads”. This GOP leader, who’s THE most successful talk show host in radio, by far, also, almost never takes calls from people who wish to argue the other side, further stifling, nee, eliminating any on-air debate whatsoever.

    Ditto.

And yes, I know you’re not a fan of him. And you’re absolutely right that Bush was hardly a conservative, in the mold of Goldwater, William F. Buckley, or even his father.

It looks like Nancy Pelosi is getting herself into a pickle with this deal about what she knew and when she knew it regarding the waterboarding stuff. Looks like she got caught telling a fib. Totally off the thread, I sometimes wonder who is reading my blog. I have a site counter that you can find at the bottom of the Bayviews page. click on that and you can read the numbers, as well as tell where the hits come from. I hadn’t done that for a few months, but today I did.

In addition to getting hits from every state in the union, I received in the last 100 visits, hits from Korea, Denmark, China, and two from the United Kingdom. I average, not counting week-ends which are reader poor, about 80 visits per day and about 95 to 100 page views.

Our little corner of the blogisphere is seen in many more places than one would imagine. While folks argue over political points that aren’t going to change any minds, the world is watching and listening. Many in other countries believe the crap that is exhibited on these pages, represent Middle America, and may even create the thought that the government has lost control, and the people are about to revolt. Remember, we are a window to the world, not just to North/south Idaho plus Spokane. Other countries that do not have democracy, which counts rather high, may read the signals all wrong. Just a thought from an old goat.

  • Nick_Adams on May 07 at 10:40 p.m.

Sweet mother! Hmoff incorrectly interprets the article he posts, but I can’t disagree with the conclusion. While I believe that Pelosi didn’t know about waterboarding specifically, I wouldn’t be sorry to see her go.

Although I’m not sure Stenny Hoyer is the answer either. Donuts to dollars that he’s got an intern or two with a story to tell. He just kind of creeps me out, but I just can’t put my finger on why.

  • Nick_Adams on May 08 at 12:00 a.m.

I should probably save these topics for tomorrow, but I’m going to be swamped, so I’ll put them out here late and hope for the best…

    1. It’s clear that President Obama is going to try and do away with the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy regarding gays in the military. If it gets through Congress (as early as this summer), it’ll mean that openly gay people can serve in the military. I support this move, but understand it’s a controversial issue for some.

It’s a fact that gays already serve in the military. Should they be allowed to serve openly?

    2. May 7th was the National Day of Prayer (started under President Truman). President Obama dutifully signed the proclomation calling on Americans to pray. However, he was immediately attacked by conservative Christian groups for not doing enough (W used the day as an excuse to invite envangelical christian groups to the White House) and even questioning Obama’s commitment to the faith.

I’m uncomfortable with my government sanctioning a day of prayer. Frankly, I’ll pray whenenever I damn well want to, Mr. President.

Do we really need a national day of prayer?

  • wheels on May 08 at 8:41 a.m.
