Huckleberries gives a big Hat Tip to Police Chief Wayne Longo and police spokeswoman Christie Wood for their superb work in providing ongoing information about the tragic murder of a college student in downtown Coeur d’Alene Saturday morning. At a time when many law agencies withhold information, CPD Blue provided news re: important breaks in the case, including an account of the murder and a good description of the murder suspect and the car he was in. Then, there was an update that the suspect had been captured, followed by the release of his name and photo (which I’ve posted below), and finally the name of the victim. This, while CPD Blue performed swiftly and well in capturing the suspect. Yeah, there was one glitch — misidentification of the suspect’s place of work. But it was quickly corrected. As I write this at 12:20 a.m., the daily papers are about to reach your door steps with a report of the story you’ve known for 12 to 16 hours. Welcome to the brave new cyber world of journalism. Now, for your Sunday Wild Card …

Two writers published responding to Pitts’ column in the S-R this morning, 10 May 2009. Rod Foss does his darnedest to excoriate anyone who doesn’t agree with him and who he doesn’t agree with. Starts of with “Christian” and church not being one and the same. Oh? As a pagan, I don’t require a coven to be a sole practitioner, but from the time of the biblical new testament, Christians have always required a church. And there was no question as to how they defined it, whether initially in their homes, or hiding out in caves, a gathering of a group of those who claimed an association and a fellowship in Christ constituted a church. So now, Foss sits there and disputes his own history. Even further, in attempting to rebut Pitts’ “liberalism,” essentially disputes the seeming validity of Christians being able to gather in fellowship with Christ and putting their “church” where ever they wished, even on school grounds. If “church” and “Christian” are not one and the same then there would be no value in taking a church where ever one wishes and seeking to establish one, even on school grounds.
Then he does a complete 180* and resorts to a church canon and makes a final rant about abortion.
The bible speaks to individuals and not nations. Is that really the case? The Old Testament spoke to nations, that those nations sinning against God would suffer the consequences. The people of those nations who failed to live up to God’s commands would suffer wholesale slaughter. Then he makes a 180* AGAIN when he attacks “the liberals” for declaring this country to not be a “Christian nation” and cherishing their mythical (constitutionally and historically it is a fact) separation of church and state. Obviously, in this case, Foss isn’t accepting his own position that the bible speaks only to individuals and not nations? Taking the man at his word on his first point, before he savagely disputes its validity, the bible speaks only to individuals. Then that would be correct. Only those individuals accepting the bible as “God’s word,” and are thereby Christians as a result. But, just as obviously, not everyone is in fact a Christian. And so, as individuals, the bible would not henceforth speak to them. That being the case, this is not a “Christian nation.” For it is a nation of pluralistic beliefs.
Finally, Foss presumes to speak for the almighty when he asserts that the almighty would render some kind of judgment on all those “liberals” to include Pitts. Essentially, Foss manages to vindicate Pitts’ entire column. And in the process, makes an utter fool of himself.
Arch_Druid on May 10 at 8:25 a.m.
Then Herbert Landis takes what is essentially the opposite task. He praises the “liberalism” that had Foss in such a lather as the “faith” that brought about justice. Well, excuse me but this is just as funny and as much in error as Foss’s own pretzel argument that ultimately bites itself.
Liberals HAVE used faith, the moral code of their faith, to do battles against slavery and etc. And they have none the less been excoriated for their efforts. Ref. Foss. On the other hand, those who have been called “conservative” saw in THEIR FAITH, why they could oppose the progressivism of unions, feminism, opposing civil rights struggles, standing silently by as Hitler slaughtered the Jews and etc., opposing what the “liberal camp” would define as justice. No, “conservatives” did not advance the cause of freedom. Liberals did. The people whom Pitts wrote about were not the people that Landis suddenly wished to embrace. But rather the people who’s history Pitts is already far too familiar with. And Foss didn’t honestly wish to address. So, I shall say here that Pitts didn’t attack ALL Christians, but rather those of the mindsets and ideology (self-proclaimed “conservative”) that fail to live up to their biblical standards, such as Foss.
spokelooneh on May 10 at 8:28 a.m.
Actually I thought Pitt’s column was a little too strident. While churches and religious authorities were responsible for enabling much of the suffering and discrimination, the opposite is also true, in that churches and believers were often on the forefront of combatting such social ills and enacting change, often at great risk to themselves.
The fact that Pitts never once mentioned the REVEREND Doctor Martin Luther King and his incredible work based on his deep faith simply astounded me.

Thank you for your comments DFO. It gets hectic but we do our best to provide the public with the information we have. We are all back in the office this morning continuing our investigation. I would like to thank you and all of your media counterparts who continually use your tremedous resources to broadcast info to the public.
The more eyes and ears looking for the car and suspect the better. Law Enforcement cannot afford to operate in a vaccum. We depend on the media and the public to help provide current information in order to capture violent suspects and keep the public safe. We are very sad for this senseless loss of life.
Hug your family members and enjoy a sunny Mother’s Day.

BTW, I’m 99% sure I know the name of the suicide victim in the Veterans Memorial Bridge jump, as a result of a tip from a Berry Picker. I’ve called the name in to the City Desk to confirm.

>Suspect vehicle: Dark colored passenger car, possibly a 2 door, 1995 to 2000, in the similar style of a Honda Civic or Ford Escort. Custom rims and tail lights, modified exhaust/muffler, hallogen headlights, tinted windows,…<
Not trying not to be overtly stereotypical here or belittling of this tragic incident, but what is the deal with the Hispanic community and these modified (poorly) 90’s Honda Civics, Preludes, Accords, etc. Here is the typical MOD job: Giant speaker box in the back seat, lowered suspension, low profile rims and tires, tinted windows (sticker type with the air bubbles), usually some lettering the back window, and the worst, the obnoxiously loud exhaust pipe or lack thereof. Loud pipes belong on motorcycles not old rust-box import sedans. Lettering or stickers of any type on a car is never cool. Providing crappy music for the entire intersection is never appreciated. If your car is making mine vibrate, you are a jackass.

Hey, I think I just saw “ME” on the freeway going from Cd’A to the HWY 41 exit in Post Falls. She had her top down, and a black visor holding that blonde hair from flapping in the wind… I got a (non-identifying) cell phone pic for DFO if he wants it!
My wife just shook her head and said: “what if it’s not her, she’s going to call you in for stalking…” I suppose that’s just risk a blogger has to take sometimes ;-)

Poolman, look what you started over on the CDA Mess comments:
“Hey Racists, go visit DFO on S-R HBO where they are having a racist hatefest ripping on the kind of cars hispanic males drive. Knock yourselves out Aryan scum. DFO wants your traffic. ”

If there is one point in which I would have to disagree with you Spokelooneh, there would be a very good reason why Pitts wouldn’t mention Dr. Luther King, jr. He wouldn’t do a hatchet job on people who overcame injustices for their own people. Or who struggled along side the minorities to help them achieve an equal status as Americans.
I got Pitts very well. As did a Pastor writing in the S-R this morning.
And “too windy,” Sausser? LOL! Sometime you should take your pastor to task for having a sermon that lasts more than a minute.
We priests are going to discuss subjects at length. And when commenting on blogs, at 4,000 characters or less.

And to Arch, you amaze me. Not because of your beliefs, but that depth that you have gone to, so that you might oppose Christianity. I’m not sure oppose is accurate, but I think you get the drift. You are obviously intelligent, and also well read. My only question is why? folks that don’t buy into Christianity, spend so much time poo-pooing it, rather than just settling down into one’s coven, concentrating on one’s own beliefs. That question also applies to those that do not believe in any religion. OK, so don’t. That doesn’t give you the authority to attack another’s beliefs. I don’t see a bunch of religious fanatics attacking your beliefs on line.
I do not push my own beliefs on line, nor do many others. I’ve kind of wondered over the years, why, those that practice non-main stream religions are so defensive, that’s all.
I have absolutely no problem with those that practice Wicka, nor any other religion, but please tell me given that you are of another faith, why it is so important to put down another?
Fork on May 11 at 12:45 a.m.
Whatever you believe, Herb’s hilarious: “rather than just settling down into one’s coven, concentrating on one’s own beliefs.”
Just awesome. Wish my grandpa was that cool (no offense Herb).

Suggest Herb Huseland that the better answer lies in your picking up some books. Let me start with The Maleus Maleficarum. Then there is the history books of Witchcraft in America. Or even turning to Witchcraft in Europe, 1100 —1700, A Documentary History by Alan C. Kors & Edward Peters. God Against the Gods, The History of the War between Monotheism and Polytheism by Jonathan Kirsch.
Then I shall also refer you to the late Rev. Falwell, Pat Robertson, the move by “Christian” fringe groups to ban any book referring to Witchcraft back in the 80s and 90s. The publicly expressed anger by some in N. Idaho that a book store could open up in Hayden and sell books that he flat out disagreed with “as a Christian” and so tried protesting it “until he feared for his life.”
Mr. Huseland, I don’t personally object to you or what you say. But, you are asking way too much to demand of a right-leaning conservative to be liberal toward a religion that is less about peace and love and more about spreading fear, hatred to assure its continued power. And then the people associated with that belief actually wonder why they get criticized so heavily? You have a particularly burdensome history, my friend. That’s the problem.

A little late for Mother’s Day, but here’s one I penned for my mom a while back. Thanks for the indulgence.
A Mother’s Love
Flowing like a river hushed
Where circling eagles reach.
Six children know that we are blessed:
Our mother’s love is deep.
For sixty summers since her youth
She’s been my father’s dream.
Through hurricanes and floods she was
A rock on which he leaned.
He knew her Irish heritage,
Lace curtains on the sill,
Would lend a grace and courage that
Far echoes ever still.
In schools for thirty years she taught
Three thousand students called.
And learned that nature is a gift
Of creatures great and small.
The beauty of her homes reflect
The fullness of her life.
Her backyard’s a menagerie,
A gardener’s delight.
These days her favorite times are spent
On lake place decks and lawn.
In winter months she’ll take to skis
With nature she will bond.
We signify these passing years
With virtues we have reaped.
So thankful to our God above:
Our mother’s love is deep.
