No Bail For CdA Murder Suspect

Update: Meghann Cuniff’s story

Murder suspect Juan C. Aldana Villanueva, 22, a Honduran living in Post Falls, will continue to be held without bond in the Kootenai County Jail, following his first appearance in court this afternoon. Although Marty Rapp of the prosecutor’s office asked that bail be set at $1 million, Judge Jim Stow refused to set bail for Villanueva, who is considered a flight risk. The prosecutor’s office doesn’t know whether or not Villanueva is a legal immigrant. It couldn’t find a Social Security number for him. Villanueva, whose car is registered in Washington, was described as a “hard worker” who sends money home by a woman who considered himself to be his “American mother.” Villanueva is accused of gunning down Coeur d’Alene Tribe member Timothy I. Wolfe, 21, of Worley, after 2 a.m. Saturday at 3rd and Indiana after a confrontation at a Coeur d’Alene bar.

    Honduran?
    No Social Security Card?
    Sends money back to Honduras?

Somebody just threw gasoline on the Mess’s comment board…

I looked back through press releases on this and am wondering if perhaps he was not an employee of Toro Viejo, but just went in there to try to hide. It could be an important distinction, for the restaurant’s reputation as well as legality as employers. I’d like to see this cleared up.

  • DFO on May 11 at 2:25 p.m.

Spokelooneh; there’d be no fire for the gas, if the Press would watch its comment threads properly.

  • carolynl on May 11 at 2:32 p.m.

Florined: It was not Toro Viejo. There was much confusion over that point this weekend. It was Rancho Viejo, on Seltice Way. And according to CdA police, that is where Villanueva worked.

  • florined on May 11 at 3:35 p.m.

Thanks, Carolyn, you’re right of course, and my apologies to Ruben and his family for my being so careless with names. The mind said Rancho but the fingers typed Toro (maybe from habit of sending in orders for veggie enchiladas w/ranch beans.

But my point is still the clarification of the SS # matter. If he were an employee, without an SS#, then I’ll assume there will be some followup with the employer. If, on the other hand, he was not an employee but rather went there because there were people he knew or for some other reason he saw the possibity of refuge, that’s a different twist.

this is going to bring up the undocumented worker debate again. Watch out.

  • Dennis on May 11 at 3:54 p.m.

I do have an issue with the P.A. requesting bail. Whether or not this guy is here legally is not relevent. This is a capital case, (Pre-meditated Murder Charge) which makes this guy an automatic flight risk. Thankfully the judge recognized that and denied bail.

Villanueva, whose car is registered in Washington, was described as a “hard worker” who sends money home to reporter Meghann Cuniff by a woman who considered himself to be his “American mother.”

Why the heck is he sending money to Meghann?

Any trace info on the gun? Maybe it’s Mamas.

  • OliverC on May 11 at 5:58 p.m.

KHQ6 News just reported he is an illegal alien. He was caught hiding in the bathroom at Rancho Viejo in Post Falls. The rest of the employees were hiding him.

There is blood on the hands of the Idaho legislature who refused to force and up or down vote on SB1155, an immigration enforcement bill brought before the Senate State Affairs Committee about a month ago.

  • tinybobidaho on May 11 at 6:07 p.m.

This death was 100% preventable if our immigration laws were enforced. But thanks to Obama for stopping the enforcement, there will be more murders by these people who break into our country and have no respect for the laws of our land. People need to speak up now because this is just the beginning if we don’t demand something be done about the illegal aliens here in Idaho.

  • OrangeTV on May 11 at 6:35 p.m.

It astounds me when folks choose to use a senseless tragedy to further their political agendas and make extreme leaps of logic to place blame on totally unrelated parties. Reality is that Idaho is not in some kind of safety bubble, and since this is America people are allowed to move wherever they want. Crimes exactly like this take place all the time in towns that are both more urban and more rural than Cd’A, all over the country, all over the world.

If the gunman had been of Swedish descent for example, even if he’d been in the country illegally, I highly doubt people would make it an issue relevant to the circumstances of the shooting.

  • Dennis on May 11 at 6:52 p.m.

    Well said OTV!!

  • spokelooneh on May 11 at 7:39 p.m.

Wow, now the racist nutz from the CdA Mess hate fest are chiming in here.

Let me translate what they’re saying:
    “Obama killed Timothy Wolfe.”

Hey, those brown illegal aliens like Obama stick together you know.

    Idiots.

  • OliverC on May 11 at 7:59 p.m.

    A political agenda?

So the life of that young man meant nothing to you all? He was killed by someone who was illegally in this country. Don’t let facts get in the way of your name calling and stupidity.

Thousands of Americans are dead, raped, mutilated, sexually molested, killed in DUI accidents and murdered by illegal aliens.

None of these crimes would have occurred if our immigration laws were enforced. But I guess the lives of innocent Americans mean nothing to you all.

OliverC: I do educate myself, and thanks for commenting on illegal aliens.

  • OliverC on May 11 at 8:28 p.m.

I was not referring to everyone! Just the ones that are showing no compassion for a young man who should still be alive today.

  • OliverC on May 11 at 8:34 p.m.

Timothy Wolf was a married father of a one year old child. He was going to school in Montana. This family will never be the same after the loss of a son, a father and a husband.

Let’s hope this is more than a one day story. Most are only reported in local news for as brief a period of time as possible and then the tragedies disappear with the families and loved ones forgotten…

  • Dennis on May 11 at 8:41 p.m.

Oliver, No where on this thread do I see a lack of compassion for the victim. What it boils down too is a senseless killing took place. The question I would pose to you would be if this heinous crime was committed by an American citizen, would you still be as vocal? I don’t mean to sound crass but I think that the suspect being illegal has very little to do with what happened.

IMHO, alcohol and testosterone had everything to do with what happened that night.

You don’t sound crass, you sound like an idiot.

If this illegal alien had not been in the United States, Timothy Wolf would STILL BE ALIVE!!!

Criminal aliens cross our porous borders at will. American citizens are being killed by them.

It certainly does matter that this murderer was an illegal alien!!!

    Would I be as vocal?

It is a separate issue entirely…I don’t know how to communicate with people like you…you make absolutely no sense!

  • tinybobidaho on May 11 at 9:52 p.m.

No one overlooks a crime if it’s comitted by an American. But we can’t deport them to stop them from killing people. But we sure don’t need to be importing crime. We can stop that. It makes no difference who they are or where they are from. If they are in this country illegally, that crime would’ve been 100% preventable. There would less of these types of senseless killings if we didn’t allow foreign criminals to cross our borders illegally. But it appears there are some here who just don’t get that.

  • OliverC on May 11 at 9:57 p.m.

This child’s father, this wife’s husband, this parents’ son is dead at the hands of someone who should not be in the United States!!!

Our federal government and our state government are complicit in not protecting American lives because of greed.

Are you serious? You think the death of Timothy Wolf has anything to do with the race of the illegal alien?

Illegal alien is not a race.

Ho Hum…yawn… How very 1960’s of you!

  • Nick_Adams on May 11 at 10:20 p.m.

@OliverC & tinybobidaho: Crawl back to the CDA Press site. Unless you’d like to see the US become a place even less desirable to live in than Central America, your hopes for preventing illegal immigration are complete fantasy. Build your walls, pet your guns and send your money to the minutemen. I’m sure it’ll make you feel better while you cower in North Idaho, but none of it will solve our immigration problem.

Now, go. Hurry down to Black Sheep and stock up on some more 9mm ammo. They’re coming for your daughter!

Worley residents grieving Tim Wolfe’s murder
    Posted: May 11, 2009
    Sally Showman / KXLY4 Reporter

COEUR D’ALENE — The small town of Worley is in mourning after one of their own was gunned down in Coeur d’Alene over the weekend.

According to court documents Juan Villanueva admits to shooting Tim Wolfe Saturday in Coeur d’Alene after a brief argument at Mik n Macs bar. Wolfe had left the bar when Villanueva drove past him and fired one shot at him, hitting Wolfe in the face.

“It was a big blow,” Tim’s friend Peter Vallee said. More here: http://www.kxly.com/global/story.asp?s=10343533

NickA; I’ve reviewed comments OliverC and tinybobidaho — and don’t find any name calling or race statements. Unless I missed something, they’re merely stating an opinion that those of you on the Left might not find palatable. But it is a legitimate part of the discussion on immigration. In other words, they are welcome here to be part of the discussion, as long as they remain civil. If anything, comments you and Spokelooneh made re: them are the most uncivil ones on this thread. Huckleberries Online quit being an echo chamber last fall. I’m the one who tells people to get lost here. No one else.

  • DFO on May 11 at 10:38 p.m.

OliverC; now I have one for you. Huckleberries Online doesn’t allow long cut-and-paste blogopotamuses. Long original stuff is OK but not encouraged. Cut-and-paste stuff is deleted. Since you’re new here, I’ll shorten your post, while leaving the link for others to follow.

    To DFO:

    Thanks much.

Some people just can’t handle the truth.

Sorry for the long cut and paste. Just trying to make this real for those who cannot fight facts….

  • Peevedinidaho on May 11 at 10:51 p.m.

    @ Nick Adams and others who seem to feel just like him;
    1. 9MM? You sure about that, son?
    2. You and others have sorely missed the point here - again (reading prior posts). It’s not just the CRIME that is an outrage - It’s the fact that an Illegal Alien committed it WITH help from his EMPLOYER - aiding and abetting - DUH!!
    3. I don’t give a flying rat’s backside if the criminal was blonde - haired and blue-eyed! Coming to this country without permits or visas IS A CRIME!! It’s BREAKING the LAWS (not wishes) of our COUNTRY!
    4. I don’t belong to any group - I’m a house-wife and Mom - and I can’t stand to see the country I love going down into the toliet because those in power now - want to CONTROL those coming in illegally - keep them stupid by NOT learning our language even after ID passed “English Only”. Yeah - right. They only did that to appease - there’s NO enforcement - so why pass a law you can’t enforce?? Humm, kinda makes ya wonder.
    5. As far as I am concerned - Idaho has been and continues to be allowing slavery (cheap labor, yucky conditions, but if they complain, they get threatened with deportation)! That employer should also be charged with more IF they knew he was Illegal in the first place!
    6. You all just don’t or WON’T get it –- take a trip this summer and visit southern Idaho to see just what is in store for you if you allow this crud to continue – Heck, I’ll even give you a grand tour!

I know this is late - and already off the first page, but I would love it if we could have a good back and forth on illegal immigration here. Unfortunately, it never happens. If you do not support ILLEGAL immigration, you are a racist and there is no way around it. So then the back and forth never happens. It’s sad, because I would like to actually hear something from those who support it and why they do.
