JS: Take Me Out To The Ballgame

I was a terrible but extremely earnest player. I never did make it to a base – so no need to worry about stealing 2nd or 3rd – I never got to 1st. The legend of my lack of prowess got to be so bad, that BOTH teams would root for me. I caught a ball, playing shortstop. I mean, I actually caught a fly ball. I’m hopping up and down and shouting, “I caught it! I caught it!” and then realized that every one on both sides is doing the same thing. All jumping up and down and screaming “She caught the ball! She honestly caught the ball!” The game stopped so we could all regroup. Even the people on the bases stood still instead of running for all they were worth/JeanieS, Nuts & Nonsense. More here.

Question: How coordinated are you? As a child, in other words, were you sought after, when your classmates choose sides. Or were you picked last?

I was picked last in gym class, all the time. But it’s OK, because I was always in high demand when it came time for classroom trivia games or picking study groups. :)

Just saw this - would it surprise anyone to know that I was always the last picked - and if it boiled down to a stand-alone-on-the-sidelines, it would always be me.

One question Jeanie, what in the world were you doing playing SS if you were that bad?

I wasn’t exactly the first pick. Wasn’t always the last, but that was usually when I got to do the picking.

I was always picked last…. in fact I still remember a class mate complaining to the wrestling coach, “come on coach don’t make me fight Henderson”, and my all time favorite from my 6th grade football coach “for gods sake Sherman you cant even catch Henderson?”

Is it any wonder I despise sports?

I was overrated. Somehow I had a reputation for being a better player than my performance ever merited. I don’t know how that happened.

As a young man, I was always picked last. As I grew, I was then always picked first. I turned in to a very good athlete, and to this day, I consider myself above average in all sports.

I’ve really never been good at sports. I was a runner, and I did that for the mental high as much as anything else. I wasn’t fast, but Running provided a great tension release. I always thot I had the mind of an Olympic athlete trapped inside the body of a couch potato.
