HowardM: Loose Moose Visit Park

Howard Martinson: Somewhat of a surprise, I’ve seen nothing today about the two moose in Riverstone Park last evening. They were having a major dinner, feasting on the shrubs, bushes and immature decorative trees near the bandshell. What a fantastic site to see them right here in town.

Question: How many of you have been privileged to see a Moose on the Loose — a real one — in the last two years or so?

We had a young male camped out on Shadduck Lane for a week or so this winter. Luckily he wasn’t aggressive - plenty of people came out to see him, with their little dogs.

It’s not unusual to see a moose on the loose at Hauser Lake. We also get to watch Bald Eagles. Maybe living here isn’t such a bad thing.

We had a moose in our pasture recently, which caused the horses some concern as he was grazing on ‘their’ grass. It was cool when the school bus came by and the driver stopped so the kids could see the rare sight.

A cow moose and her yearling calf spent two days in the yard adjacent to ours on N 12th Street in February.

Many. As I drive for a living these days, I have seen many on the loose. They are everywhere, you just have to look. I remember a few years back a mother and her child walking down 10th street in Coeur d’ Alene. They spent about 6 months on Tubbs Hill and then we never saw them again. I hope they are well.

The moose do seem to be getting closer to the populated areas or vice versa. I’d wager that we are more likely to have some sort of bad moose/human encounter before a bad wolf encounter with humans in this area.

Winter before last saw three moose in Bayview. One lone moose that survived the winter and a cow & calf that were killed through misled generosity. A woman near Thrid street in Bayview, put out a pile of corn for the moose. The ate it and died. THE MORAL OF THE STORY HERE, IS DO NOT FEED WILD ANIMALS FOOD THEY ARE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO!

This past winter found a moose cow and calf in Bayview, also, but they didn’t stick around.
