Raymond Pert: My two years at North Idaho College (1972-74) turned my life around
and pointed me in the direction I am still following. Every day I go
before a class of students, I try to give to them what the generous and
passionate instructors at NIC gave to me. Jim McLeod, Annette Bignall, Virginia Tinsley-Johnson, Rick Frost, Joyce Boswell, Tony Stewart, George Cook, and Robert Singletary.
Question: Can you name and describe a teacher who had a big impact on you?

I can think of three teachers that I still remember to this day: Ray Davis, my high school English teacher. Taught me to write and write well. I still use stuff I learned in his class.
Emily Chandler during my ill fated foray into nursing school. For gosh only knows what reason, they had a “literature and the caregiver” course that we were required to take. It was the only class in the entire year that I enjoyed before I dropped out. Again: further refinements to my writing technique. Do we see a trend here???
Lastly, Richard Randall who taught the logic class at NIC that I took a few years ago. His class taught me that you can disagree with someone and still treat them like a human being; something I badly needed to learn at the time.

A teacher who had a lot of impact on me was the late Dale Tritten at North Idaho College. He taught math in such a way that I could actually understand it.
I actually got the chance to tell him that a few years ago. I saw him out on the Centennial Trail, near Tony’s Restaurant. And he grinned from Ear To Ear when I told him that. I’m guessing that’s the ultimate compliment for a teacher…for them to be told by one of their students that they did good.
I’ll always remember him. What a cool guy.
