Teaching An Old Dog New Tricks

Killian, a competitive border collie, flies through the air while chasing a flying disc thrown by owner Sharon Marconi while warming up for the taping of a television show for the Animal Planet channel in Acton, Mass., Wednesday. The show is aimed at teaching old dogs new tricks, like fetching a brew from the fridge or helping a human land a date. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

Question: Can your old dog fetch a beer? Or do any other tricks?

My 2 dogs, long since passed, had a great relationship.

The bigger of the 2 had been abused before he came to us.
His visual perception was way off and used to stop only when he ran into whatever had caught his allention.
The smaller dog was a great herding dog and loved to chase whatever caught her attention.

With ball or stick or pinecone tosses, the little one would race off to tag the item. She wasn’t much interested in returning it , though.
The big dog raced—loped— to the little dog’s spot and would gloriously capture the ball, or whatever, and triumphantly carry it back to me.

I couldn’t tell who was happier but the neighbors were always entertained.
