Dracula Wild Card — 5.18.09

I’m working from home today, nursing the tail-end of a bug that I hit about mid-afternoon Friday and sapped my strength most of the beautiful weekend. So much for gardening. On this day in history: In 1897, Dracula, a novel by Irish author Bram Stoker is published. In 1980, 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption: Mount St. Helens erupts in Washington, killing 57 people and causing $3 billion in damage. In 1920, Pope John Paul II was born. In 1981, American author William Saroyan died. Canada is observing Victoria Day. And the Monday Wild Card is in play …

Just throwing this out there - but are there any Desperate Housewives fans on HBO? Spazz and I anxiously awaited the season finale last night and were very disappointed in the outcome and the “cliffhanger” they left us with - not very cliffhanging at all.

Anyone else have thoughts about it?

  • Jen on May 18 at 10:52 a.m.

I’ve always found it interesting that my own little volcano was born on this day 8 years ago, on the anniversary of the Mount St. Helens eruption.

Digger, DH is on the dvr. Haven’t watched it yet since we were watching the season finale of Survivor.

Man, I woke up feeling a little cruddy this morning too, DFO. I hope it’s just allergies. I don’t have time for the swine flu this week.

  • Don_Sausser on May 18 at 11:16 a.m.

Bent, its just the strain of all those bike miles showing up :)

  • Bent on May 18 at 11:24 a.m.

I was wondering about that too, Don. Maybe its a touch of sun stroke…

  • Digger on May 18 at 11:26 a.m.

Bent - you have to remember that home brew does not count as proper hydration when working in the yard and garden. :-)

The “bug” hit me Wednesday night, like a punch to the stomach. Better now but did have a hankerin for porkchops!

  • JeanC on May 18 at 11:44 a.m.

I woke up yesterday with a hot scratchy throat and I still have a slight burning sensation in the top of my lungs this morning. Kinda like when I started to get the crud a while back. I am hoping it is just from overdoing it on the outside work on Saturday and allergies. Need to remember to start popping loratadine with the rest of my daily pills :P

In spite of all the hand-wringing, teabagging and declarations of sovereignty, Idaho sure isn’t wasting time trying to get its hands on federal transportation stimulus dollars. Only fellow deep-red Oklahoma has secured more money at this point.

DFO, you sure the S/R doesn’t have illegals doing the janitorial services in the evening? Could be the Mexican flu, brought up by a Honduran as he traveled through Mexico on his way to CdA.

  • JeanieSpokane on May 18 at 12:08 p.m.

Digger. Yes - I am an avid Desperate Housewives fan. I also was disappointed. I am torn in a way – I would like to see the bride be Susan – but I also feel a little sorry for Katherine (and yet at the same time, I think she’s pretty scheming).

  • lew2nl on May 18 at 12:14 p.m.

    Now here’s a deal for you…

Ad from today’s ‘local’ paper” ~~ Custom made diamond wedding set, yellow gold, size 6 1/4, .30 CARROTS, never worn …..

  • BrandonHansen on May 18 at 12:25 p.m.

Can somebody explain to me how we got from Dracula to Twilight? I mean in another twenty years are we going to have vampire Care Bears?

Oh, and somebody needs to bury the movie “Blade” alongside Wesley Snipes’ career.

    Saw this at Opencda:

It never ceases to amaze me how many anti-Mary threads are generated by HBO.Since when has it ever been wrong, to hold our local gov’t and its officials acountable for their actions? We need watchdog groups in CDA.When someone does not want a watchdog group and criticizes them,
it concerns me as to their true motivations.

    Comment by kageman — May 16, 2009 @ 9:23 am

  • Sisyphus on May 18 at 12:34 p.m.

How about the motivation of the watchdogs?

  • Kage_Mann on May 18 at 1:09 p.m.

Ray Gun, is a liberal who happens to comment on OpenCDA and who is at odds with alot of people over there.I can only guess as to the ‘true motivations’ of this person.

  • spokelooneh on May 18 at 1:24 p.m.

Ray Gun is a liberal, eh? Well then it’s obvious what his/her motivation is, which is to destroy America, like all liberals.

  • Raygun on May 18 at 1:35 p.m.

Ray was banned from Opencda, they only allow dialog when it is an echo.

  • OrangeTV on May 18 at 1:35 p.m.

Some are only able to see the world in black or white, us or them, right or left, liberal or conservative, Christian or heathen, gay or straight, American or un-American, my way or the highway.

This way of thinking results in nothing but negativity. Once one realizes that life is full of gray areas and that everything isn’t so neatly categorized, life becomes much more positive and fulfilling.

  • nic on May 18 at 1:58 p.m.

Wow… Ray… A week or so ago, I said that Ray Gun was the lone voice of reason over at openCDA. I stand corrected. Is the banning permanent?

  • Raygun on May 18 at 3:37 p.m.

I received an email from one of “the moderators” at Opencda that stated:

    “Raygun,
The approval we granted allowing you to post content on OpenCdA.com has been revoked.”

  • DFO on May 18 at 3:48 p.m.

Ray Gun; did they give you a reason for giving you the boot?

  • Raygun on May 18 at 3:49 p.m.

    More from Opencda:

    Apparently, when someone is banned,
the mere mention of that persons name
and the post is killed, unless you log-in.

    Comment by kageman — May 18, 2009 @ 2:57 pm

We do not crow about banning people, unlike other sites. We don’t make a big deal out of, but we do enforce our policy. If someone isn’t adult enough to obey our rules, then we exercise our rights as proprietors and ban them. You will not read about it here as, unlike other local bloggers, it is not our intention to defame someone who’s been banned.

“…it is not our intention to defame someone who’s been banned”, it’s just our policy to squelch dissenting opinion, or anything we disagree with.

    ;-)

  • mike_s on May 18 at 3:53 p.m.

Too bad about Ray Gun, they were a good addition to opencda. What happened?

  • Raygun on May 18 at 4:01 p.m.

I had posted some comments regarding Mary Souza’s tape recording of her conversation with Christie Wood which led to a warning from one of the male moderators (not Mr. McCrory).

(That warning email threatened to permanently ban me from Opencda if I disclosed its contents on another website and I complied with the request to keep it a private communication. However, having been banned anyway, I’m considering reprinting it on multiple local and political blog sites.)

Subsequent to this event, I posted some comments regarding Kathy Sims’ admitted illegal campaign fundraising and expenditures. They were deleted, some in part, some in their entirety. Apparently the moderators of Opencda did not enjoy seeing a public display of their hypocrisy in defending, excusing and justifying the Campaign Finance law breaking by Kathy Sims, while at the same time becoming apoplectic about Charlie Nipp’s transgression of the disclosure rules. Here is the email, in its entirety, that first notified me that I was banned:

    “raygun,

Concerning your submitted posts which you believe were censored:

I did not censor your comments; I censured your misbehavior. We have no control over what you say anywhere but on OpenCda.com. If you feel you are being censored, you have the ability to start your own website or weblog and then post whatever you choose.

But when you’re on OpenCda, you’re nothing more than one of several guests invited to a social event. We encourage invited guests to participate by asking questions and make comments leading to the entertaining and hopefully constructive exchange of ideas.

But every now and again, an invited guest will get out of line like a belligerent drunk at a cocktail party. He will become loud and obnoxious. We will try to calm him down. If we succeed, he is welcome to stay and continue to interact with the other guests. But if he will not refrain from misbehaving, if his misbehavior becomes so much of an annoyance to the other guests that they are no longer enjoying themselves, then we as hosts will ask him to leave. We have not only the right to do that, we have the obligation to do that out of respect for our other invited guests.

You are here only as an invited guest. You have been asked more than once to refrain from objectionable misbehavior, and you have refused. You have become an annoyance to other guests and have contributed nothing to their enjoyment. You have absolutely no right to be here. Do you understand that? Contrary to what you may think, contrary to your careless use of the word “censorship” which implies you are being deprived of some right, you have no right whatsoever to post on OpenCdA.
Please leave and do not try to return.
    Thank you.

    Bill McCrory”

  • Dennis on May 18 at 4:02 p.m.

    Raygun banned from open cda??????

Sounds like election season is officially beginning. Gookin,,,MMQC & crew don’t wanna cloud their conspiracy theories with facts.

    ;-P

  • Cabbage Boy on May 18 at 4:10 p.m.

Ray Gun, you should change your name to Ray Ban.

And as much as that banning may hurt :) he is right about your use of censorship. His social event analogy is a bit weak though.

This is about the most telling line here,
“But if he will not refrain from misbehaving, if his misbehavior becomes so much of an annoyance to the other guests that they are no longer enjoying themselves”

Seems you were too much of a thorn, they weren’t enjoying themselves anymore.

  • Bent on May 18 at 4:20 p.m.

Ha! Ray Ban…I like it, good one Cabbage.

  • Sisyphus on May 18 at 4:42 p.m.

Let’s review this in context shall we. The Press’ editorial to the public states:

“Our goal at The Press is to give readers as much latitude as possible to express their opinions — even when we disagree vehemently with those opinions.”

But if your name is Ray Gun their private view holds sway:

“But when you’re on OpenCda, you’re nothing more than one of several guests invited to a social event.”

Press to the Public: “We prefer to give people too much freedom to express themselves rather than too little. We prefer to know what people really think — even when those thoughts horrify or repulse us.”

Private Press: “But if [Ray Gun] will not refrain from misbehaving, if his misbehavior becomes so much of an annoyance to the other guests that they are no longer enjoying themselves, then we as hosts will ask him to leave.”

Public Press: “That revulsion, we believe, is a small price to pay compared to the dangers that exist for those who prefer a head-in-the-sand approach to the expression of opinions different from their own.”

Private Press: “You have been asked more than once to refrain from objectionable misbehavior, and you have refused. You have become an annoyance to other guests and have contributed nothing to their enjoyment.”

‘Objectionable misbehavior’. Enjoying themselves? What a joke they are. So basically all their BS expressed in their public editorial about the first amendment basically gets junked if the majority gets ticked about the content of one guy’s opinion. They really don’t understand the first amendment at all. But the hypocrisy between their private view and their public view is palpable. It puts the Press firmly into supporting and protecting vile racist comments even though they have the power to expunge them. They choose to leave racist comments. Their interest in a considered debate is fallacious on its face. And while they are not obligated to remove them their choice of what they don’t censor speaks volumes.

Between this high drama and the Edie Brooks sign conspiracy, seems like Junior High antics are back in style. Who’s going to anonymously put out a tray of Ex-Lax brownies at the next city council meeting?

  • Sisyphus on May 18 at 4:54 p.m.

“I’m considering reprinting it on multiple local and political blog sites.”—let me know if I can help.

  • Sisyphus on May 18 at 4:55 p.m.

You’ll need those for your next camping trip Orange.

  • florined on May 18 at 6:27 p.m.

Correct me if I’m confused about this, but I thought “OpenCDA” was a private blog operated by 3 named people. I thought the Press blog was a separate entity. If I’m correct, Sis, then the Press editorial wouldn’t apply to OpenCDA at all, even though OpenCDA and the Press blog seem to share posters and, often, attitudes.

  • Stickman on May 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Thanks Orange, I liked your thoughts. I also had a brief visit this evening from KT, what a pleasure was that. As Always.

  • mike_s on May 18 at 7:39 p.m.

This Dracula day has had its share of entertainment. The Bill M. e-mail makes one long for the old days of HBO when the opencda crew used to hang out with the rest of us.

    Oh the antics.

  • JarodS on May 18 at 8:35 p.m.

I’m kind of lost as to what everybody is talking about with the ban and some other website?

  • Sisyphus on May 20 at 9:27 a.m.

florined, yep that was my bad. That has since been explained to me. I conflated Mary’s involvement in both as a unity of interest. That may or may not be fair to the Editorial Board.
