The Route of the Hiawatha mountain bike trail will open for the 2009 season on May 30. Snow and trail maintenance has prevented the trail from being open sooner. You can read all about the trail and the upcoming season here.
Question: Have you ridden the Route of the Hiawatha? What’s it like? Would you recommend it to others?

This might be the year to come ride this.

I rode it with my wife two years ago. It’s a beautiful ride, and even an amateur bicyclist like myself can handle it just fine.

I’ll be riding it this year too. I rode a portion of it years ago when I was with Shoshone News Press, and the project was being proposed by Tom Magnuson… It was tough go back then. The tunnel we went through was full of water, so your feet got soaked right off the bat. That’s not the case anymore though.
Sis, just remember your helmet and your lights. They are required, but of course they will rent them to you if you forget them.

The trail is awesome, a great ride for the whole family. Totally worth every penny spent. Ric Clark the GM, (x-brand X reporter and PFJR high teacher) M does a great job with running the whole operation. Take the whole family. I try and do it twice a year now, its a family tradition.

My day riding the Hiawatha Trail was among the most pleasant days I’ve ever spent. I’m particularly happy that I did not ride it one way, but rode it up and then back down. Not only are the vistas heart stopping, the railroad’s history and the history of fires that have blown through there are fascinating — and well marked and cogently described.

Well, not ALL of us ride UP the route. But the down trip is just a joy. Pack a sandwich and water and take time to stop along the way to take in the surroundings, the spectacle of the trestles and tunnels. The first time I went, I rented a bike (with headlight) at the ski resort. They even had a bike rack for our car so we could get to the trail head. It’s possible to skip the first tunnel, but don’t do that. That time I also arranged (again at the ski resort) for transport back up to our car (wimp that I am.)
A glorious day to spend a day.

Yes, last year. I still have the scars to prove it :)

I have made the ride a couple of times, and I recommend riding back up the same way you came down. It’s easy going down, but also very easy making the run back up. Try it sometime.

Sis,
If you come up this way, I’d be proud to show you some amazing trails.

As for what the trail is like:
As advertised it is a long downhill on a hard packed gravel base with a longgggg tunnel at the (usually beginning) top end. Take more light than you think you need and spend some time getting your tunnel vision when you go in and you’ll be fine. My seven year old did fine.

Our family made it a Memorial Day week-end outing a few years ago. We stayed in Wallace, some of us rented bikes from Lookout. It was early, so the tunnels were pretty muddy. We had a great time, it is a beautiful ride. I did not enjoy the bus ride back up to the top, seems I have some issues! We were all looking forward to nice hot showers when we got back to our hotel. Something had happened, the plumbers were in the building, and the water was shut off!!! Crazy!
We went downtown and enjoyed ribs at the rib joint that has their smoker on the sidewalk. Thankfully the water was back on later that evening! What fun!
